Counterculture Bolinas, which has defied description for decades, appears ready to define itself.

The folks in this far-out town north of Stinson Beach are buzzing over ballot Measure G, a stream-of-consciousness message about loving nature submitted by a woman who wears burlap and paints her face with chocolate.

Measure G makes more sense than most of the laws passed in California.

"Most of us signed this because Jane is a town character, and we didn't want to hurt her feelings."

That makes more sense than most of the reasons for passing California's extremely numerous laws.

And Dakar makes more sense than most of the people living in Marin.

As a matter of fact, when I lived at Stinson Beach, I developed considerable affection for the Bolinas crowd. They were generally more reasonable and less insane than most of the people in the "Liberal" enclaves of California--and Dakar is probably one of the more mainstream of the townsfolk.

AH Bolinas!!! The place where I spent one long summer of my youth living on the beach and being naked. It was great!!! But when I went back a couple of years ago and spent the night at Smiley's (the only hotel in town) it was really strange. Lots of dogs running loose, lots of flies, lots of doped out people, really BAD FOOD. I guess that's why when I lived on the beach a couple of miles up from Bolinas I never went into town. If you want to revisit the 1960's, Bolinas is the place to go.
