The Ford auto plant in Hazelwood started this week to restrict where its 2,500 workers can smoke on the job, ending the decades-long practice of allowing workers to light up almost anywhere.

The change was prompted by pressure from state officials and anti-smoking groups, who claimed the Ford policy violated Missouri's Clean Indoor Air law.

There are few things more vomit-inducing than a co-worker coming to ask a question, and immediately flooding your olfactory senses with the deep dank stench of what i refer to as the 'stale cigarette smoke' smell.

I have a co-worker who is terminally addicted to the vice, and not only does he give off the "stale cigarette smoke" odor, but he has this horrible noxious stench that comes right off his lungs and smells exactly like dog shit. People talk about it behind his back; most of them mistake it for body odor and snicker about his personal hygiene, but after working with him for four years, I can tell you without doubt that it's his breath. He's had a number of mini-strokes; he's badly overweight and has type-II diabetes, and has been advised repeatedly by everyone to give up his vice, but he's determined to die with it. I feel badly for him, because he's one of the nicest, pleasantest, most hard-working and dependable men I've ever known. Of course as a conservative, I'm obliged to endorse smoking, since the liberals despise it.

Its irrelevant what "pressure" was applied to Ford. Its still their property and their right to set policy.

Might be a good thing...
Since you automaticly jumped to the conclusion that I in some way thought this foolish woman was in the right... or I disaproved of smokers or smoking.
I think she's an idiot, 8 years and now she complains..
Like another poster noted, she could have reached some sort of pro quo with her smoking fellow workers, or managment could have found her somewhere else to work.
I just made the comment that I quit and I think that the smell that is left behind by smoking doesn't smell very good. For that I get ragged as an antismoking crusader out to strip you of your right to light one up. My choice, my opinon - I'm entitled to both here in the good old USA.
Enjoy your smokes...

How in the heck pro- smoking ever get to be a CONSERVATIVE cause is beyond me.

Smoking is a conservative thing because it's an individual thing, FRiend. You remember that individual freedom thing, don't cha?

If you follow all the smoking threads you'll see that most of us are for accommodation between smokers and non-smokers, individual rights amd property rights.

Non-smokers are fine folk, usually. We don't blow smoke at them.

It's the virulent anti-smokers who offer no accommodation, don't respect us as free and thinking individuals and don't want any bar anywhere to allow a whiff of tobacco that deserve the contempt of real conservatives.

Ford owns the plant, they can dictate the rules. Thats called property rights.

Yeah but very little of the debate here is about property rights if it doesn't support a smokers addiction.

I just get very upset when someone tells me I STINK when they have never even met me. Just because I smoke, the antis automatically think I stink and I resent that with all my heart. I bath daily and wash my long hair daily. I keep a very fresh mouth. I am always washing my hands after smoking. I keep Wet Ones in my car to wipe my hands before going into a store to shop. I wear cologne (after my bath). I take great pride in the way I look AND the way I smell. And I do realize that most non-smokers can not stand the smell, so I think I am respectful in the fact that I do chew gum and keep my hands clean when I am out in the public shopping.

Looks more like they decided to obey the law.

You know me, metesky. We get wonderful non-smokers in our threads and they, too, understand the threat of the government forcing private business owners to bend over to do the will of the anti's.

But when we get some ugly jerk calling themselves a Conservative in Free Republic and start jumping all over me because I STINK BECAUSE I SMOKE, yada yada yada.........HEH! They are gonna get it. Because "I" will not stand for it!

Then I most repectfully apoligize for infering that YOU stink. You go to great length and effort, unlike many smokers, to try and minimize the impact of your habit.
Thank you, although you may never hear it, there are many of us that appreciate the efforts some smokers go through limit the olfactory effects of the cigs..
I know you enjoy the habit, so did/do I, but I enjoy living too, and so I made that choice.

You know what my own Doctor told me recently about smoking?

He said:
"There was a plane load of people. The plane crashed and everyone got killed. The people on that plane who smoked,  quit.

In other words, smoke or not, NON of us are going to get out of this life alive When our number is up, it won't matter ONE HOOT if we smoked or not!

Nice to see a few fairly rational folks around these threads.

Accommodation goes a long way for everybody and we seem to agree that gub'mint should butt out of this issue.

In Praise of Bad Habits

Gosh! I have been smoking since I was "16." Haven't coughed up blood or had a hack YET! hmmmmmmm must be in my GENES. heh!

Just had a check-up last week. Doctor said my lungs are very clear, and golly gee whiz, I SMOKE! And he KNOWS it!

My Granny smoked THREE packs of unfiltered Camels a DAY and lived to be 86! Died in her sleep. And she was never sick.

Oh, I realize that.
I've around and caused enough sudden and violent death to know that.
I've buried enough friends to know that.
But I have a little boy that I love very much, and I really want to be around to see him grow up. So rather than try and beat the rather stacked odds I was facing, I added a few cards in my favor. I could still die, I could die tonight driving home from work. But there is a vast gulf between that risk and feeding the lesions that were growing in my lung.
SORRY THAT OFFENDS YOU.

Screw smoker's rights. I have the right to breath clean air and not be engulfed with a known carcinogen. If some dumb son-of-a-bitch wants to endanger his life and the life of his family in their own home, so be it, but don't try and light a "cancer-stick" around me. It means nothin' to me to whoop a man's ass.
