The True Colors of the New South

If I heard him correctly, according to Zell Miller, there are 33,000 blacks holding public office in the South. When making his point, he mentions that for this to happen, districts which are predominantly white have to be populated by something other than people who fit the modern Democrat stereotype of the region....(SNIP)
The New South is new in only a few ways. Tolerance and respect for two. Unlike the North, religion still holds sway. The dirty, cold cities of the North, dominated as they are by liberals, have spayed the church there. But, in the south, on a Sunday, you can still hear hosannas and singing so rich and full that the soul that was hidden from the displeasure of political correctness now comes out and breathes for the first time in eras.
For lots of folks, life without God lacks warmth. The black trek south is about warmth.
The South isnt made of concrete. It is made of delta dirt. Of Georgia pines. Of peanut farms and country lanes lined by old oak trees.
I know. I know. They have shining cities made of chrome and glass. They have running water and television and all that up to date stuff.
But, not far from the Atlanta cab stand is a porch on a tree-lined street. And not far from that is a man in a straw hat, putting oil in his tractor.....(SNIP)

I was born and raised in the south, born in Old Hickory, TN, went to school in Nashville, went to the Grand Ole Opry with my Bigmama(grandmother), dated Cowboy Copas (not sure of correct spelling of name) son, we were just friends, but good friends. Moved to Atlanta GA at 16, been here every since. 65 now.
I love the south, everything about her, her heritage, people ( all colors), food, everything. It has always been that way for the people of the south.
There is and has always been more bigotry and racism up north, than down here. We have always been open and honest with our wrongs and rights, up north, they hide it and accuse us of being what they are deep down and live.
I am well traveled, have seen this and noted this. The blacks are moving back, they are coming home, they know what it is like up north, just as the liberals keep the blacks on their plantation for votes, it is the same up north.

Once a southerner whom knows their history, a southerner they will always be, Black or White.
In the north they talk of Black's cooking as, "soul food." Where I come from Blacks and Whites ate the same, and grits was groceries for both races.
I know one area where southerners, both Black and White are totally in agreement on, "stop illegal immigration" and stop it now.

A wonderfully written article.
I'd like to invite the author to come on down and sit a spell.

I think that you spelled the name of Cowboy Copas right. He was a C&W singer, as you well know.

Zell said 5,500. Too bad the first line of the article is a mistake.

I emailed Oregon Magazine re the corrected number in the first paragraph and got this response.......
I love forum folk for just this reason. They provide me with twenty million top grade background researchers for free, God love each and every working brain of them.
Actually, though, someone on another forum said that if you count all the blacks at the county and city levels where the day-to-day work of communities gets done, the 33 thou number is more likely!

Cowboy Copas - very cool!

The blacks are moving back, they are coming homeA co-worker, a black woman, told me once she so wanted to visit Georgia, where her mother was born. Her family moved to Portland Oregon before she (my friend) was born. Her mother did not want her going South at all, was fearful. I just had a postcard from this friend from Georgia! Says it's wonderful, that she now understands so much about her mom that she didn't before. I am so glad it is a good visit for her!

What is really weird, here in New York I've run into more 'people of color' that were bigoted than 'caucasions'.
And I've had a heck of a time trying to figure it out.
Had a woman scream at me that I hated her because of her skin color.
Mind you, I had no idea who she was, and had never met her before.
My response was, "No, I hate your attitude and your behavior."

Don't say it!
Up my way, you'll have cops and lawyers after your butt, AFTER you have people 'whomp your butt' for it.
They're (EVERYONE, businesses, employers, post offices..) really picky about anything you say.
Even innocuous stuff.
Largely depends on where and who you run into, but one can't be too careful about who might decide to be offended by anything you do.
Especially here in enemy occupied NY.

I have a black friend who said he prefers the south to the north in terms of the racial slights. He compared the south to cake without the frosting - at least you know what you're getting when you buy. Up north he's got to cut through the frosting before he gets to the cake.
To: Darksheare
It is much the same in liberal-occupied Oregon since liberal Californians discovered the state in the seventies. Well, I think I'll try that line, anyway (keep a voice recorder in my pocket?).
