The good thing about Lunars is that there are more chances than Solars.

Earth Shadow

The year fades towards its end
Autumn has taken hold
Summer is just a memory
The first taste of winter's cold

Night has fallen
The full moon is in the sky
The brisk wind is blowing
Thin clouds wafting by

Suddenly, creeping slowly at first
The eclipse makes its start
Blocking the glory
Like fear encroaching on the heart

Sometimes this flesh, the earth
Just gets in the way
Dimming the Sun's brilliance
Keeping out its reflected rays

But this too shall pass
It will pass very soon
And once again the Sun will shine
Reflected from the full moon

It doesn't really appear that the "southern" portion of the moon was ever totally eclipsed.

That was exactly what I observed in Central Pennsylvania (State College). I don't ever remember a total lunar eclipse being this bright, although it's been at least a dozen years since I last observed one.

Excellent site.

I went to my college's observatory. They had 3 spotter telescopes. 2 were on the moon and the other was on mars. They also moved them around to other places.

I then went inside and looked through their powerful telescope. Magnificent site, especially the fact you could spot the craters on the moon as well.

A very good turnout and it was my first time in the observatory (even though this is my second year here).

2155 hrs. The moon is almost back. Turns out to be a cloudy night over Brooklyn.

Here's why:

This is the second lunar eclipse of 2003. Observers of the first one in May might remember that the moon was nearly invisible during totality. This eclipse will be different. During totality on Nov. 8/9th the moon will remain relatively bright, and there will be a pleasing gradient of color across the face of the moon--pale-white on one side, crimson-red on the other.

My daughter received the Sacrament of Confirmation this evening. As we left the church, the eclipse was just beginning under a crystal clear sky. We went for dinner and as we emerged from the restaurant, the eclipse was complete with the moon casting a beautiful red glow. What a magnificent and awsome sight on this truly sacred occasion! Red is the color of Confirmation. Just a perfect day!

Pretty good! A gold star for you!

Fits this eclipse perfectly from the perspective around here.

I videotaped it, until it was starting to show light on the bottom again.

I could not see any color change! People who came by told me they saw color!!

Maybe it will be on the video, but I am copying another one now, I wont see it for an hour or so...(sigh)

Yep. The one I posted is from the link in the post following it; live "webcam" (although it appears to be a sat image), updated every 14 seconds.

It appears to be a joke. It's represented as a live satellite image, but it's obviously a a single picture - AS11-44-6667 in fact.

... and whadaya mean "yep" ? Are you saying you knew this was from Apollo 11 all along, but you chose not to mention it, "which is your right as a human being," to quote Joe Bob Briggs ?

I had the joy of watching the moon go from 3/4 total to total with my 11 year old son. My last total lunar eclipse was when I was his age.

The moon looked like a silver plate covered with cinnamon.

As others have noted, the southern pole of the moon did not go completely dark--its limb still glowed even at totality.

Peoria had a hazy horizon, but clear skies overhead. It was 27 degrees. We watched from a dark park near our home.
