Charlie Daniels: Great American Conservative
10-nov-2003 | stb

Charlie Daniels is a great American Conservative, Christian, and Southern Gentleman.

I just got back from the Charlie Daniels Band concert and my what a show!

As the lights dimmed, the crowd of mostly faded blue-jeans and t-shirt clad Americans chanted, "Charlie, Charlie....."
Charlie Daniels took the stage, fiddle in hand. His larger than life presence stood above the crowd: tall cowboy hat, silverly grey beard, and giant shiny belt buckle reflecting the stage lights. He leaned forward and struck that bow across the strings and the show got underway!

After playing "Drinkin' My Baby Goodbye", Charlie stopped to thank everyone to come out and support the band and the crowd roared with appreciation. He played a few more songs including the boogie woogie classic"South's Gonna Do it Again" and paused for a moment.

Charlie Daniels said the Pledge of Allegiance and the crowd joined in. He said he had been corresponding with some U.S. Troops in Iraqi. He stated what they tell him is much different than what Peter Jennings and Dan Rather tell us on the news. He dedicated his next song to the men and women who served in all wars and during peacetime: "In America." He changed the lyrics to "Go ahead and place your hand on a Florida Gators fan....God Bless America Again!"

Charlie played "My Baby Plays me Just like a Fiddle" and "Caballo Diablo", where he and the band jammed.

Charlie wiped the sweat off his brow and addressed the audience again. He said there is one crime in this world that is intolerable and one that he can't stand: crimes against children. He urged his fans to spend time with their children, guide them, and pray with them for guidance. He also said the predators are organized and mentioned the disgusting group NAMBLA. He stated he would like to do to them what he does to his cattle every spring. CDB jammed up into the short but powerful "Simple Man."

After a short break, Charlie took the stage solo with his fiddle and played the Star-Spangled Banner. Hats came off and people sang along. The band joined him and performed beautifully. All the while some brothers in front of us held up Old Glory and Charlie saluted the flag, recognizing the flag and his beloved country. Then, he broke into "This Ain't No Rag, It's a Flag" - the people in Tennessee could have heard us sing the chorus: USA, USA, USA.
Charlie played so hard, he broke his bow! That's playing with feeling.

Charlie took a bar stool and sat with gave his personal testimony and said this was his favorite Gospel song: "How Great Thou Art" Lighters came out and across the dark audience - some people sang along, others just took it all in. It was a beautiful rendition of a great gospel song.

CDB Keyboardist Taz Di Gregorio sang a great blues song and Mark Matejka sang a fantastic Southern rock and blues song he wrote that was shades of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Charlie had a face off with each band member where he played a riff on the fiddle and the other instrument had to follow. First the bass, then electic guitar, and keyboard. Charlie playfully hit some notes on Taz's keyboard with his fiddle bow. Drummer Pat McDonald tossed up a drum stick and Charlie followed suit with his fiddle. When Charlie went back stage and came back with two fiddle bows, Pat was forced to bust some moves with both his drum sticks. The face-off really showcased the bands talent and how much they really enjoyed playing.

Charlie admitted that he was sorry Travis Tritt could not attend the show with him and sing "Southern Boy", but he did a great job covering Tritt's pieces. It was a crowd favorite.

Charlie recognized Johnny Cash and offered his humble and respectful thoughts on the country legend. He played an upbeat rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues" in Johnny's honor. Then the haunting "Legend of Wooly Swamp" with thick guitar and scary swamp tale.

Charlie closed with "Devil Went Down to Georgia" that got everyone dancing a jig!

Charlie Daniels is a Great American Conservative. It is so refreshing to hear a good message and see a good show!
God Bless Charlie Daniels and God Bless America!

Wooly Swamp is MY neck-o-the woods! My GG Grandad's farm and mill was on Wooly Branch. I knew Charlie played music with an uncle of mine, but didn't know CD new of THAT spot on Earth.

Thanks for the post. I have seen the Allmans, Rossington Collins Band, the first Skynyrd tribute tour ('91), Molly Hatchet, and .38 Special, but I've never seen the CDB.

Yeah, this guy is freggin` great. I love those 'soapbox' articles he writes. The guys a fiddle player yet he`s got more common sense and smarts than half the "pro" politico columnists out there. He just cuts right through all the BS.

From The Front Lines

On the nightly news and across the front pages of our daily newspapers
we are shown images of the people in Iraq protesting our troops being
in their country.

Peter Jennings, Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw all show the very worst
scenario of things in Iraq and Democratic Presidential
candidate Howard Dean, among others, wants to pull the troops out.

Where does the truth lie in this situation? Do the people of Iraq
really want the U.S.A. to walk out and leave a huge power vacuum?
Should we listen to the major media who seem to have their own agenda
or to the people who are in Iraq actually trying to help the Iraqi
people form a new government and have a better life?

I will leave that decision up to you, but I feel that to make an
informed decision you should hear both sides of the story. I recently
received an e-mail from a soldier on active duty in Iraq and asked his
permission to print it in this column. I want to thank him for agreeing
to share this first hand account with the readers of this column.

Charlie,

I am currently in Balad, Iraq, it is in the Sunni Triangle you hear
about on the news. We’ve been here since May. I’ve been hearing a lot
of negative stuff on the news about us being here and that we shouldn’t
have started the war, etc.

Well, I will tell you that we have freed a long oppressed people. I
have spoken to many common Iraq people and they are very glad that we
took Saddam out of power. I’ll give you a few examples.

We employ hundreds of Iraqi truck drivers. I have talked with several
of them. Before we got here they were making about a dollar a day. We
pay them $20-35 dollars a day.

We hired a guy to clean our building three times a week for seven bucks
a day. He had not had a job in three years! He is one happy guy. He
has a wife and three kids.

The point is, we believe the majority of the Iraqi people are very glad
that we came and freed them. There is a minority of extremists and
criminals who aren’t. Unfortunately they have the weapons.

So let the American people know that the sacking of Saddam was a good
thing for the Iraqi people and now we need to focus on rebuilding the
country, not on why we should not have come over.

I thank you for your support of the military and our great country.

Msg. Randy B. Silvey
U.S. Army

Nuff said.

Pray for our troops.

What do you think?

God Bless America

Charlie Daniels

Uneasy Rider - Charlie Daniels, 1973

I was takin' a trip out to LA
toolin' along in my Chevrolet
tokin' on a number and diggin' on the radio
Just as I crossed that Mississippi line I heard that highway startin' to whine
and I knew that left rear tire was about to go
well the spare was flat and I got uptight 'cause there wasn't a fillin' station in sight
so I jes' limped down the shoulder on the rim
I went as far as I could and when I stopped the car
it was right in front of this little bar
a kind of a redneck lookin' joint called the Dew Drop Inn

well I stuffed my hair up under my hat
and told the bartender that I had a flat
and would he be kind enough to give me change for a one
there was one thing I was sure proud to see
there wasn't a soul in the place 'cept for him an' me
and he jest looked disgusted an' pointed toward the telephone

I called up the station down the road a ways
and he said he wasn't very busy t'day
and he could have somebody there in jest 'bout ten minutes or so
he said now you jes' stay right where yer at
and I didn't bother tellin' the durn fool I sure as he!! didn't have anyplace else to go

I jes ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
when some guy walked in an' said who owns this car
with the peace sign the mag wheels and four on the floor
well he looked at me and I &*% near died
and I decided that I'd jus wait outside
so I layed a dollar on the bar and headed for the door

jes' when I thought I'd get outta there with my skin
these five big dude come strollin' in
with this one old drunk chick
and some fella with green teeth

an' I was almost to the door when the biggest one
said you tip your hat to this lady son
an' when I did all that hair fell out from underneath

now the last thing I wanted was to get into a fight
in Jackson Mississippi on a Saturday night
'specially when there was three of them and only one of me
well they all started laughin' and I felt kinda sick
and I knew I'd better think of somethin' pretty quick
so I jes' reached out an' kicked ol' green-teeth right in the knee

he let out a yell that'd curl your hair
but before he could move I grabbed me a chair
and said watch him folks 'cause he's a thouroughly dangerous man
well you may not know it but this man's a spy
he's an undercover agent for the FBI
and he's been sent down here to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan

he was still bent over holdin' on to his knee
but everyone else was lookin' and listenin' to me
and I layed it on thicker and heavier as I went
I said would you beleive this man has gone as far
as tearin' Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars
and he voted for George McGoveren for president

well he's a friend of them long-haired hippie type pinko fags
I betcha he's even got a Commie flag
Tacked up on the wall inside of his garage

he's a snake in the grass I tell ya guys
he may look dumb but that's jus a disguise
he's a mastermind in the ways of espionage

they all started lookin' real suspicious at him
and he jumped up an' said jes' wait a minute jim
you know he's lyin' I've been livin' here all of my life
I'm a faithfull follower of Brother John Burch
and I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church
and I ain't even got a garage -- you can call home and ask my wife

then he started sayin' somethin' 'bout the way I was dressed
but I didn't wait around to hear the rest
I was too busy movin' and hopin' I didn't run outta luck

and when I hit the ground I was makin' tracks
and they were jes' takin' my car down off the jacks
so I threw the man a twenty an' jumped in an' fired that mother up
Mario Andretti woulda sure been proud
of the way I was movin' when I passed that crowd
comin' out the door and headin' toward me in a trot

an' I guess I shoulda gone ahead an' run
but somehow I couldn't resist the fun
of chasin' them jes' once around the parkin' lot

well they're headin' for their car but I hit the gas
and spun around and headed them off at the pass
well I was slingin' gravel and puttin' a ton of dust in the air

well I had them all out there steppin' an' a fetchin'
like their heads were on fire and their a$$3$ was catchin'
but I figured I oughta go ahead an split before the cops got there
when I hit the road I was really wheelin'
had gravel flyin' and rubber squeelin'
an' I didn't slow down 'til I was almost to Arkansas

I think I'm gonna re-route my trip
I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped
if I went to LA
via Omaha

Hey, you can find Carvers Creek on the other side of Bladen county - where the Cable boys were supposedly from.
