My letter to the Miami Herald re: Katherine Harris' bid for the Senate
23 November 2003

In response to the November 21 Article, Harris Defends Bid for Senate, I wrote:
I couldn't help but respond to Paul Slack's one-liner: "Katherine Harris wants to make it clear that 'the president was elected with integrity,' but she seems to forget that President Bush was 'court appointed.'" Mr. Slack completely missed the point, which is that if Katherine Harris runs for the senate, she will be forced to answer for the 2000 election, and the truth will finally surface for all to see. That truth, pure and simple, is that George W. Bush was rightfully elected.
It amazes me to see how many Florida residents are ignorant of their own state laws. As of 2000, Section 102.111 required the secretary of state to certify the election results within seven days: "If the county returns are not received by the Department of State by 5 p.m. of the seventh day following an election, all missing counties shall be ignored, and the results shown by the returns on file shall be certified." Section 102.112 gave Katherine Harris the discretion to refuse late returns: "If the returns are not received by the department by the time specified, such returns may be ignored and the results on file at that time may be certified by the department."
Of course, there's a bit more to this story than just that, but the point is that not only was Katherine Harris' November 14 certification of the election returns fully compliant with Florida law, it was the most appropriate way for her to comply with the law. I eagerly anticipate seeing what happens with Harris' senate bid. I have no doubt that she "will gut all the inane arguments that [opponents] make about the recount, which are really ludicrous."
In the end, Katherine Harris' senate bid will undoubtedly serve George W. Bush well in the 2004 election. I urge all Republican leaders in the state and across the nation to support Ms. Harris.

Has it been published? If not, do you expect it to be printed?
Great response in either case.

It amazes me to see how many Florida residents are ignorant of their own state laws. That goes for the Constitution... when they say that Bush was elected not selected it just drives me crazy.
It went to the Fla. House and the Fla Senate SHOULD HAVE gone ahead with thier vote. Just to put it on record. They were both Republican (voted in by the Fla. people)
Then of course, it could have gone to the US House and we know which way they would have voted.

Miz Harris will NEVER be the nominee in 04. White House HATES the idea. Can you imagine every photo op of W in FLA with Ms. Harris in the picture?
Realpolitic: Harris, Senate, 04: No way.

Has it been published? If not, do you expect it to be printed?I just sent it. And yes, I hope for it to get printed. I feel optimistic as they've printed some of my less well-written comments before, but then again, I suppose it depends on how far out in left the reviewer is that day... Great response in either case.
Thank you. :)

Did any of those Hillary Clinton political cartoons after the Socialist Nuclear Attack on Americans' Health Care Health Care Reform Act in 1994 stop her from winning a seat in New York?

Ya think so?
Maybe because of this picture?
BTW, those are HER boots...

While Katherine Harris would make a great Senator, she is deferring her Senate bid to Mel Martinez.

The best man at my wedding married an MD's daughter.
The MD had been an MD in the Navy during WWII. He had passed away from cancer years before Mike's wedding.
Years into the marriage, the wife's mother died. Going through their effects, they found love letters back and forth during the Navy years. The mother had been a nurse, as I recall.
Anyway--in closing all the letters--especially the husband but also the wife would close with the sentence:
"I have big feet for you."
This baffled them no end. What on earth could they mean?
Finally, in the last shoebox of WWII letters, they came across a post card of a famous San Diego Balboa Park statue. I don't remember the character on the horse, but the horse obviously has BIG FEET. And that's not all the horse has that's big.
And, I think there was a caption on the script side of the card: "BIG FEET!"

The Democrats can bang the election 2000 drum all they want it only resonates with a minority of hard-core voters who voted for Gore anyway and have no possibility of being converted to voting for a Republican. Let them whine and whine and whine
I'd love to see Harris in the Senate. She was very businesslike in the way she handled the press in 2000. I think she has the brass to do very well in a Senate Campaign. On the other hand - FL voters elected Bob Graham with no reservations...
To: Syncro
Dang! Repubs have her and Ann Coulter and the Dems have Milkowski and Hillary and Helen Thomas ...
gee, it really does s**k to be a Democrat these days.
