"Council members believe it's necessary to provide protection in a town that does not have its own police force and relies on the sheriff's department for protection."
My local news here in Oklahoma did not mention this part. Instead they just mentioned that gun requirement and called it "bizarre"

You know this will be challenged and the challenger will win don't you?
I have aconstitutional right to own a gun but I damn sure don't want a government body making a law that I MUST own a gun.

The other thread on this topic (
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1027670/posts) lists a few exceptions. I think they should have more exceptions given, but the general impression is that no one is ever going to pay the ten dollar fine regardless of whether he owns a gun. I think this kind of law is nice symbolism. I don't think that government should tell anyone to own a firearm any more than it should tell them not to own a firearm. I doubt Gueda Springs was ever on the list for Al Qaeda's next attack, but the attitude behind this law is the type of thing that would lessen the chances of another attack.

I think Massachuesetts had a similar law, and so did Virginia and Connecticut.

I'm all for guns..but I believe this is purely symbolic..how would the county enforce this act?? Knock on everyone doors and ask them to present their fully loaded fire-arm??
To: ConservativeMan55
Ah man if that happened in my town not only would I be fined $10, but I would end up in Prison for up to 5 years for complying with the ordinance...Guess I would have to get a permission slip from the City or the Police Chief and they could argue it out with the BATF.
In case you are wondering I am not a felon...I'm just considered a non-immigrant alien, and guns and bullets are a no-no for me according to the BATF (even though my state licensed me for a firearm and the FBI did a background check)...
To: ConservativeMan55
--Not everyone thinks the ordinance is a good idea. Sumner County Sheriff Gerald Gilkey says the ordinance makes him concerned for the safety of his offices when responding to calls, especially those involving domestic violence. --
Maybe the Sheriff would be happier in another line of work?
