Iranian Alert -- November 25, 2003 -- IRAN LIVE THREAD
The Iranian Student Movement Up To The Minute Reports ^ | 11.25.2003 | DoctorZin

Posted on 11/25/2003 12:02:01 AM PST by DoctorZIn

The US media almost entirely ignores news regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran. As Tony Snow of the Fox News Network has put it, “this is probably the most under-reported news story of the year.” But most American’s are unaware that the Islamic Republic of Iran is NOT supported by the masses of Iranians today. Modern Iranians are among the most pro-American in the Middle East.

There is a popular revolt against the Iranian regime brewing in Iran today. Starting June 10th of this year, Iranians have begun taking to the streets to express their desire for a regime change. Most want to replace the regime with a secular democracy. Many even want the US to over throw their government.

The regime is working hard to keep the news about the protest movement in Iran from being reported. Unfortunately, the regime has successfully prohibited western news reporters from covering the demonstrations. The voices of discontent within Iran are sometime murdered, more often imprisoned. Still the people continue to take to the streets to demonstrate against the regime.

In support of this revolt, Iranians in America have been broadcasting news stories by satellite into Iran. This 21st century news link has greatly encouraged these protests. The regime has been attempting to jam the signals, and locate the satellite dishes. Still the people violate the law and listen to these broadcasts. Iranians also use the Internet and the regime attempts to block their access to news against the regime. In spite of this, many Iranians inside of Iran read these posts daily to keep informed of the events in their own country.

This daily thread contains nearly all of the English news reports on Iran. It is thorough. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a nation. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary. The news stories and commentary will from time to time include material from the regime itself. But if you read the post you will discover for yourself, the real story of what is occurring in Iran and its effects on the war on terror.

I am not of Iranian heritage. I am an American committed to supporting the efforts of those in Iran seeking to replace their government with a secular democracy. I am in contact with leaders of the Iranian community here in the United States and in Iran itself.

If you read the daily posts you will gain a better understanding of the US war on terrorism, the Middle East and why we need to support a change of regime in Iran. Feel free to ask your questions and post news stories you discover in the weeks to come.

If all goes well Iran will be free soon and I am convinced become a major ally in the war on terrorism. The regime will fall. Iran will be free. It is just a matter of time.

This just came in from a student in Iran...

"Doc
Yesterday a moderate newspaper "shargh" compared Bush with Cyrus the great, founder of the Persian Empire.
To many of Middle Eastern analyst Mr. Bush is becoming the liberator of the region.
That sounds interesting among the Iranian people. "

Chirac Hails Draft Resolution On Iran's Nuclear Program

November 25, 2003
The Associated Press
Dow Jones Newswires

PARIS -- French President Jacques Chirac on Tuesday hailed the agreement between U.S. and European diplomats on condemnation of Iran's nuclear program, saying the compromise reflects efforts to make Tehran take confidence-building measures.

The draft of a proposed resolution agreed to Monday broke days of deadlock at the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency over how to chastise Iran for 18 years of clandestine nuclear activities.

The draft avoids any direct mention of the U.N. Security Council, but warns the agency would use "all options at its disposal" -an allusion to the council.

The accord "goes in the direction of efforts made by the international community to convince the Iranians to take...all the measures needed to re-establish confidence," Chirac told Javier Solana, E.U. representative for security and foreign affairs.

Chirac's remarks during a meeting with Solana were released by the presidential Elysee Palace.

Solana expressed satisfaction that E.U. diplomatic efforts to stop the development of arms of mass destruction were having results, the Elysee Palace said.

France, Germany and the U.K. last month pressed Iran into agreeing to open up to IAEA inspectors.

Diplomats in Vienna told The Associated Press that the draft included a U.S.-supported clause indirectly threatening Security Council action should Iran fail to honor its commitments to the IAEA.

Powell Pleased with Draft Resolution

November 25, 2003
The Associated Press
WorldNow

State Department -- Secretary of State Colin Powell says he's "very happy" with a compromise draft resolution on Iran's nuclear program.

The proposed resolution criticizes Iran's past nuclear activities -- and warns that the U-N nuclear agency will use "all options at its disposal" if the country violates its nuclear obligations again. But it makes no specific mention of Security Council sanctions.

Powell told reporters at the State Department today the resolution notes Iran has violated its nuclear obligations, and that there will be follow-up measures if future violations occur.

The proposed compromise breaks days of deadlock between U-S and European negotiators on Iran's disputed nuclear program. Powell says he expects a vote on the resolution by the nuclear agency's board of governors tomorrow.

The U-S has accused Iran of secretly trying to make nuclear weapons.

"Mr. Ahmad Shirzad, a deputy from the central city of Esfahan strongly criticized the ruling hard liners for plunging the nation in isolation by having transformed the visage of the Islamic Republic from a "popular, peace-seeking, equalitarian and a society based on Justice into a hub for totalitarism, disdain of human rights, violence, supporter of international terrorism in quest of mass destruction weapons and cut from its people".

That's quite a mouthful.
I hope Mr. Ahmad Shirzad is alive and well.
He's got a lot of nerve speaking out like this.
I'd like to hear more from him in the future.

Can the United States Aid the Iranian Opposition?

Start: Wednesday, December 3, 2003 11:00 AM

End: Wednesday, December 3, 2003 1:30 PM

Location: Wohlstetter Conference Center, Twelfth Floor, AEI
1150 Seventeenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036
Directions to AEI

Iran remains the most influential religious and political laboratory in the Middle East. A coherent U.S. strategy toward Iran is increasingly necessary as dissent among the Iranian populace grows and evidence of both an aggressive nuclear weapons program and terrorist ties mounts. With international support, the Iranian opposition could bring about the end of the theocracy, but much of what we know about these opposition groups comes filtered through the media or intelligence analysts. Can the tyranny of the mullahs be ended, can the internal Iranian opposition take on the task, and should the United States assist opponents of the regime in any way?

AEI will host an unprecedented Iranian-American town hall meeting with leaders of the opposition inside Iran. A panel of experts and activists at AEI will join a panel of opposition leaders in Iran to discuss the future of Iranian leadership, possible paths of reform, and the potential American role in this process. Audience members at AEI will have the rare opportunity to ask opposition leaders direct questions. This meeting will be live and simultaneously broadcast via KRSI radio (Los Angeles) into Iran. (Please note that this event will take place entirely in Farsi, with simultaneous translation available for our Washington audience.)

10:45 a.m.
Registration

11:00 Panel Discussion and Broadcast

Introduction:
Danielle Pletka, AEI

Moderator: Reuel Marc Gerecht, AEI

** Please note that for security purposes, the names of panelists in Iran and Washington will not be disclosed in advance.

1:30 p.m.

If this is true, we should go after him and the Iranians harbouring them. By any and all means, covertly or overtly with or without UN approval.

This article is hard to read (the main article) because it refers to "conservatives" and "reformists."

I would like to see a brief synopsis of the election issue by someone who could put it in REAL terms of who the supporters of terrorists are, vs. those who wish to democratize Iran. And I hate terms like "right-wing," which are meaningless for Islamic fundamentalists.

Can you shed any light on the situation?
