anti-Bush bias at Google? (Vanity)

Go to Google, enter "miserable failure", and click on the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.

I get the official page for President Bush at the White House site, http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html. I've gotten it over and over.

We had a discussion on their anti-conservative bias a couple of weeks ago. I could use a refresher course because I can't remember the details. Does anyone?

I got it both on "I'm Feeling Lucky" and searching regularly. When I got it searching regularly, I hit the Cache link, which will highlight the terms in the document you search. Neither "miserbale" nor "failure" nor any combination thereof was located in the biography.

As reported by politicalwire.com, Google is not being partisan, but "has been manipulated by anti-Bush bloggers".

As I understand it, Google is a unique search engine in that it ranks pages by how often other pages refer to the page it serves up in the context of your search.

For example, if you searched for "automobile repair" you might get a lot of pin-up calendar Web sites if a bunch of auto repair Web sites point to calendar sites.

Every Dim Bush-bashing Web site (including the New York Times) that links the Whitehouse site in the context of "miserable failure" will cause Google to increase the Whitehouse site's score in that search.

If every FReeper put up a Web site and linked to Sen. Clinton's site with the reference of "miserable failure" she would show up first.

Shalom.

Thanks everybody for checking this out and explaining it. Thanks especially to BlackRazor and ArGee - I guess we should all come up with a phrase to describe Howard Dean and plaster that all over our blogs and sites. :)

"I'm taking part in a new web project...

From this day forth, I will refer to George W. Bush as a Miserable Failure at least once a day. Why, you ask? Well, someone came up with this great idea to link George W. Bush and Miserable Failure in popular search engines. If you have a blog or web site, help raise the link between George W. Bush and the phrase 'miserable failure' by copying this link and placing somewhere on your site or blog."

GOOGLE BOMBING

Last Update: December 9, 2003

Google is unique among search engines in that while it almost always shows you pages that have the exact keywords you are looking for, occasionally it will show you pages that don't have those keywords, but other pages linked to that page with those words. In a bizarre surreal bow to the power of perception on the web, what you say about a page becomes just as important as the actual content of the page. The page must be what other people say it is. That Google adheres to this rule and is by far the most effective search engine raises many interesting issues, none of which we will attempt to discuss or explicate. Now Google is smart, simply having tons of the same links with the same phrase on a single page will do nothing. It requires a multitude of pages to have that link with specific link text. But this power can be harnessed with a concentrated group effort. And it must be harnessed, and for one very important goal: make Michael "Miserable Failure" Moore come up first when people do a search for "Miserable Failure."

Here's how you can join in the google bombing fun:

1. Get a web site. If you already have a web site, you can skip this step. If not go to Geocities, Angelfire or wherever, it doesn't matter. Everyone has something to say blah blah blah personal expression yadda yadda (or maybe a nice Glenn Beck fan site, not like this one). Just remember the Google bombing.

2. Whenever you update your site, which should be approximately three to five times a week, be sure to include the following HTML at some point:

Michael < href="http://www.michaelmoore.com">"Miserable Failure" Moore.

3. Add your site to Google.

4. Wait for the magic to happen! Soon, whenever you type in miserable failure into google, you'll see Michael "Miserable Failure" Moore's greasy fat face smiling right back at you.

Users of the popular search engine Google who type in "miserable failure" will find the official White House biography of President George W. Bush pop up as the first entry.

Though often intoned by presidential candidate Richard Gephardt, D-Mo., the phrase appears nowhere in the Bush bio page.

Silicon Valley-based Google is not responsible for the search-engine result, according to New York Newsday.

Computer users rigged it by posting the phrase on Web pages and linking it to the Bush biography, the paper said, in a technique called Google bombing.

A Weblog enthusiast said he spontaneously joined in the prank in late October.

"I thought it was absolutely one of the funniest ideas I've ever heard," Don Waller, owner a Web design company in New York, told the paper. "This is just one of those spontaneous things that a blogger will post something and other bloggers will say, 'This is a great idea.'"

Newsday said White House spokesman Ken Lisaius had no comment, and Google did not return phone calls.

Creating the association apparently required no more than 32 pages with the phrase "miserable failure" linking to the Bush bio.

Just before the Iraq war began, tricksters rigged Google to bring up a page ridiculing France for its refusal to join coalition forces. A search for "French military victories" brought up a spoof page modeled after the standard "no documents were found," which asked, "Did you mean 'french military defeats?'"
