Bill Bennett and Sean Hannity Support Torturing Saddam
FOXNews
Posted on 12/16/2003 6:25:28 PM PST by Flightdeck
On Hannity and Colmes a few moments ago, Sean and Bill Bennett (who I think is one of the most respectable analysts out there) both supported torturing Saddam and others to save American lives. I disagree with that for a number of reasons, but the foremost being that it is wrong in the eyes of God. Since this is my first posting of a thread, I apologize if the sourcing/location and stuff is wrong. I'm interested in others' opinions.

Didn't the army just discipline someone for this?

Give Saddam a shovel.
Have him spend at least 12 hours a day digging up the mass graves.
Once he's finished with that, take him to a random spot in the Iraqi desert,
the most Allah-forsaken area possible.
Tell him, "You are going to help up find those WMDs. Start Digging. And you'll dig
12 hours a day until we find something."

And?!? SO DO I!!!!!!!!!

I don't know much about this subject, but isn't torture ineffective for getting information? The subject simply tells you whatever you want to hear to get the pain to stop.
I would not support it because not only is it wrong, but it is ineffective. I didn't hear this show, so I can't comment in an informed manner, but if this is what they said they are sounding singularly ignorant.

Torture as most people understand it--physical pain--does not produce accurate information.
Psychological torture (drugs, hot-cold, water, no sleep, etc.) is highly effective and, for the subject, not permanently harmful nor particularly painful...merely damned annoying.

I figure that's what happening right now...

One of the reasons we have justly removed the worm from power is because of the horrific torture he conducted. If for no moral reason, why give other stupid countries the ammo against us?
To: Flightdeck
I think Americans are above torture IMHO.

I think the Iraqis will be all too willing to pronounce sentence and judgement on Saddam without us getting our hands (ethically) dirty over this. A public trial and then likely execution. Torture won't be necessary but I wouldn't be against handing out old shoes for the Iraqis to use in carrying out their rebuke. In fact, I think the coalition should have a shoe drive for those destitute Iraqis who can't afford shoes.
But Bush has the right approach here. His crimes primarily are against his own people. Let them try him and exact punishment. All we have to do is hand him over at the appropriate time and supply the evidence we've compiled. I have confidence the free Iraqis will do the rest.
Anyone remember Calciescu (sp) in Romania? I suspect we'd have a scene similar to that.

I agree. Send him to another country and let them torture him for a while.

I'd like to know if the priest who is complaining about how Saddam was treated is on record for complaining about how our soldiers were treated when captured by the Iraqis including the possibility that some of them were executed after capture. Somehow.... I think probably not. Though I could be wrong about him.
To: Flightdeck
I support torturing Alan Colmes.
All joking aside, we are the United States of America. We are the example for the rest of the world. We have to rise above this sort of brutality and cruelty.
So .... I say we let Mossad question him! Problem solved! ;^)

Death Penalty, Fine. That would be great.
...and It would be so satisfying, so just, to have Saddam tortured mercilessly. Shove bamboo shoots up his fingernails while he is on 500ug of LSD. Infect him with diseases. Boil him in oil. Pound his digits with a hammer one at a time. Dislocate his shoulders. Cram feces down his throat and large food items up his rectum.
Nobody will lose sleep over Saddam being tortured.
But Americans are better than that. We need to set an example to the world that we are not barbaric. Stern, firm, relentless, yes, but barbaric, no. We can't even let the Iraqis do that to Saddam.
But this stupid idea coming out of Bill Bennett and Sean Hannity? , I'm very suprised. After all, who would Jesus Torture? Our Constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishment, no matter what the crime.
Torturing Saddam would unleash horriffic anger against any of our troops who might happen to be captured. While it may be fun for sick minds to think about, the reality is that it is about the most stupid thing we could allow to happen.
To: Flightdeck
There is no need to torture Saddam Hussein. His ego will fail him again under relentless questioning over a period of time.
However, some consider Colonel Lewis firing of his sidearm near the jihadists noggin as torture. I don't, the situation demanded an answer but if we all want to be honest with ourselves we have to answer this question:
If we could save the lives of men in our command by either physically or mentally torturing a bad guy, would we do it?
