Rangel: "Is there any evidence that the rat in the hole coordinated resistance?"
Hannity and Colmes

Posted on 12/18/2003 6:12:12 PM PST by Political Junkie Too

Rangel is asking "Is there any evidence that the rat in the hole coordinated resistance?" He's calling Saddam a "bum."

I say that, on the face of it, there may be evidence that he did NOT coordinate the resistance, given his appearance and where/how he was found. Even THAT is important information to know.

What Rangel is not saying is that if we hadn't gotten Saddam, Rangel would be running around still claiming that Saddam WAS coordinating the resistance. Now that we have him, Rangel is saying that there is no evidence that he was coordinating the resistance. I say there is value in suspecting that he wasn't coordinating the resistance because we can now eliminate that possibility and move on to other alternatives.

They want it both ways.

Apparently not. I guess we'll have to settle for the death penalty, then. I was hoping for Double Secret death, but Rangel wins again.

Rangel reminds me of old Irish pols from Boston, partisan always but always common man and common sense. And he is right. Sadaam controlled nothing but about two guys who guarded him and he and them may have been held captive once in the hole and sold out to us.

It doesn't matter anyway if Rangel is right. The POTUS said that Sadaam's capture would mean nothing to ending attacks against our troops in Iraq.

Burkeman, you need to read more and post less... This paragraph from FOXNEWS.

WASHINGTON — Secret papers found in Saddam Hussein's (search) hiding place reveal that he had regular contact with the leader of the terrorists who oppose the U.S. presence in Iraq, military officials told The Post.

The papers prove Saddam communicated with Izzat Ibrahim al Douri (search), his former deputy in the Ba'ath Party - the political organization behind his reign of terror.

Details were sketchy, but the documents show Saddam was more deeply involved in the resistance than previously believed, the officials said.

How do you suppose that the briefcase find immediately led to the capture of dozens of thugs? You can repeat this all day, but the truth is obvious.

Congressman Rangel and common sense simply can't appear in the same sentence no matter how complimentary you are about the blessed irish.

Rangel is shouting down the wrong rat-hole. He is looking more and more ridiculous the more he rants about this war.

I look forward to an Adminstration spokesperson to verify this "news report" but I won't hold my breath.

Here's a clue to the left. Sadaam and OBL are not coordinating anything except their own survival. They are, however, focal points and rallying points for those people that would do America harm. I would go so far as calling them living martyrs. Capturing them in a humiliating way will reduce the effect of their living martyrdom.

America is safer today because suicide bombers that saw Sadaam unwilling to fight or die might be a little reluctant to strap on a bomb in the name of returning him to power.

I am sure the administration wishes Sadaam controlled the "resistance".

Hell's gatekeeper is holding the mortgage on ole Charlie's soul. He gave it up a long time ago for his 30 pieces of silver.

It's a shame, too. He is no fool, but his hate now consumes him to the point of irrationality.

Had we killed the guy, Rangel would be running around saying that we executed him and should have just arrested him. This guy is SHAMELESS!! I'm sorry, but these damn liberals are very sensitive to being called unpatriotic and unAmerican, but what the hell else are we to think??????????

Here is the (military) administration confirmation you were looking for - do I have to do all the work?:

Documents found with Saddam Hussein link the captured dictator to a Baghdad guerrilla network connected to "Mohammed's Army," (search) a fighter group that has mounted resistance operations around Tikrit, Fox News learned Tuesday.

These documents are leading to the arrest of other resistance fighters and regime members, ACCORDING TO U.S. MILITARY OFFICIALS (my caps).

On Tuesday, in fact, American soldiers arrested a suspected local Fedayeen leader and 72 other people during a raid north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said Tuesday.

Coordination is a lower level function. Irrevelant chatter from a NYC type that's absolutely clueless about such matters.

However wrong Rangel may be, Hannity doesn't have a shred of moral authority to challenge him

On Hannity's radio show today, a military guy called in and Hannity, on his own volition, started talking about how people kept asking him why he didn't join up, since he's so gung-ho about other people fighting.

The Chickenhawk accusation, in other words.

I couldn't believe Hannity's response

First, he said that he's too old(41), and too fat to serve.

Which doesn't explain why he never served when he was younger and could have volunteered

Second, and far worse, he actually said it wasn't necessary for him to serve because his father had served, and had once told him that he had served so Sean would never have to.

Well, isn't that special? I wonder if a future draft board would recognize that exemption

He followed up that gem by talking about why he hadn't gone to Iraq, and said that, well, the troops would rather see Pamela Anderson, anyway.Meaning,he'd rather send a woman into a combat zone than go himself.

The gall and smarminess of this self-serving jerk are beyond belief.

My father was shot in WWII. In many respects, his wounds never healed. Never mind that he was a solid conservative who worked on the Goldwater campaign in South Alabama as well as Jack Edwards and Bill Dickenson. He would have broken both my legs before letting me enlist. Said he saw things no one should ever have to see.

"I say that, on the face of it, there may be evidence that he did NOT coordinate the resistance, given his appearance and where/how he was found."

Actually, the consensus that -I've- heard is that it -has- been established that he was involved in coordinating the resistance. That actually surprises me, I didn't think he was, I thought he'd be too busy hiding (I guess he was good enough to multitask that one).

I'm still looking for the link. Fox News had an article about it. Centcom stated they believed he was coordinating them based on the information in his briefcase.

My grandfather was wounded fighting the Nazis in Italy

To his dying day, he wouldn't eat crabs because he saw the bodies of men killed at Anzio being eaten by swarms of crabs

But I wouldn't think of using that to argue that I could cheerlead a war without ever having served and say that I had an inheritable exemption from service

And if I were a popular radio host, I wouldn't be too chicken to go to a war zone either

Rangel knows better. Absence of a shave, a haircut, and a manicure does not imply that the individual is incapable of directing military activity. Nor does this particular form of military activity require micromanagement from above. The idea that some Big Boss identifies targets, assets, and means, and then sends his troops out to execute, is Hollywood fantasy. It simply doesn't work that way.

OTOH, if such a Big Boss is foolish enough to keep a list of principals in a briefcase, and then gets caught...
