Gee, as if beef prices were not high enough already.
In the market today, in New Hampshire, rib roasts for Christmas were running over $10/lb.
We'll dine on pork loin ($2.29/lb).Must be interesting to our Canadian cousins to see the States get hit by Mad Cow.

This stuff is really bad! It isn't quite a virus, since it does not appear to be a living organism. It's more like a reproducing molecular structure.
Since it's just a molecular mass, you can't "kill" it. If you take an infected cow's brain and incinerate it, then bury it for 100 years, you still have this material left. If after all this, it is ingested, it is still potent.

First U.S. mad cow case may delay border opening for Canada, producers worry
I wouldn't want to wish our circumstances on anyone, but if (mad cow) is confirmed I would say we will do anything in our power to help the Americans get through this.
We also have to remember it is only two cases in North America."
I hear this was the first case.

PETA must be absolutely giddy over this news.
After all, they've been "hoping" for a such a thing to happen here.
(tinfoil hat /off)...... ;)

Either incineration OR long burial WILL destroy it (or even letting the meat rot).

BSE is caused by a prion which is one part of a virus structure. It is indestructible. Unfortunately it survives the intense heat in sterilization procedures and fire.
In the past 10 years scientists have reported that BSE was transmitted to cows when infected offal (remains of animals, such as sheep) was mixed into cow feed. Farmers worldwide were advised to stop mixing offal into the feed. Offal had been routinely mixed into feed to provide more nutrients and fat and also to save money. It's interesting that so far there is only sick cow on one farm.
Approximately three-four years ago there were news reports about one US hunter who became infected with variant Creutzfeld Jacob Disease (Mad Cow Disease in humans) after the hunter ate cooked fresh venison which he had personally hunted and shot. As I recall the reports were verified by some Fish and Game officials who said that there were a few herds of deer and buffalo in the US which had Mad Cow disease.

Yep. It has been found in Deer and Antelope here in the West. It is always the Milk cows because they live the longest and breed the most to keep milk production up. Which would mean the veal industry may take a major hit with Milk and Beef futures. But the pits may be closed or shortened; the holidays are a great way to give all the experts time to take control. By New Years it'll be "Move along nothing to see."
Happy Holidays from Casa Grande AZ and May God Bless you and yours.

Hoping?
More likely they imported it and infected the cow!
I would put nothing past those zealots, nothing!

Thanks for confirming this, WoollyRain.
"It is always the Milk cows because they live the longest and breed the most to keep milk production up."
That's the troublesome part. I thought Holsteins were not dairy cattle (and my farmer's daughter Mom would be unhappy I have forgotten) yet if it's mostly dairy cattle getting BSE and/or getting offal mixed into their feed, then is BSE transmitted into milk and/or are they now slaughtering dairy cattle?

What are "the pits?"
"...the holidays are a great way to give all the experts time to take control. By New Years it'll be 'Move along nothing to see.'"

Thank you for a very delightful and positive note! Merry Christmas and God Bless you and your family from S. California.

Neither would I.
It terrifies me to know I share a country with these monsters.
In fact, all "liberals" frighten me.
They are responsible for probably 90% of the draconian "it's for your own good" laws that exist.
I don't care to be "converted" to vegetarianism at the point of a sword, as it were.
Somebody here must know where to find the PETA president's "wish" pertaining to hoof and mouth disease and the USA.
