Dear Yossi ~

Today you’re going into the Israeli Army. I know that you’re excited and probably also a little scared (who wouldn’t be?) but that’s normal, that’s OK. We are so proud of you and want you to know we love you and we are 100% behind you. Your father wants you to know that you have his bracha.

We see in the media, both in Israel and in the U.S. how the Palestinians are being “humiliated” at checkpoints, by the security wall which prevents them from sneaking into Israel to murder innocents. We also hear all about the leftist ideologues who think they are being “courageous” by refusing to defend their fellow Jews because they don’t agree with their religious beliefs or where they have chosen to live. True courage means doing what G-D says is good and right and moral even if you don’t get interviewed on CNN or written about (in a good way, that is) in the New York Times.

We never hear about the ordinary recruit, or about the loyal soldiers in Hashem’s Army, the ones who believe in G-D and in G-D’s promise to the entire Jewish people, who do their jobs without complaining. We don’t hear about the ones who study Torah, and who acknowledge that they follow G-D’s commandments. We never hear from the soldiers who take seriously their vow to protect the citizens of Israel as well as Hashem’s commandment to love their fellow Jew. Nevertheless, we want you to know that you are loved and appreciated by many people whose prayers for you go up to shamayim every second.

You are performing a true Kiddush Hashem (a sanctification of G-D’s name) not only for yourself and your family and all the chayalei Chabad, soldiers of the Rebbe, but for all of Israel.

It’s very hard to write this without sounding all silly and corny and cliché-ridden. “Pride, love, blessings, prayers” yeah, right, SEND CASH!!

We love you. G-D bless you and protect you.

Ma & Ta.

I am certainly privileged to post this. Any parent, and I've known quite a few, experiences some deep concern to see their kids grow up and join the military. Yet, thank G-d they do, as they are the ones to pay the price that we may live in peace and freedom, whether here in America, or in Israel—our only true ally in the Middle East.

Thanks for a post from someone who can deliver the info that I want to deliver. For some years now, disasters like bridges collapsing have been quickly answered by using helicopters to rush surplus/discarded flatcars from railroads to be used as temporary bridge replacements. I firmly believe that Israel needs to complete that wall as quickly as possible and that old railroad flatcars are a great answer to relatively quickly complete the task while the real construction continues one or two feet behind.

Please send this along to someone who might be able to get it into the hands of someone who can take action.

Is there some rule of conduct on FR that requests one not spell God? I've seen this elsewhere. That is God spelled out as G-d.

My letter to recruit Yossi. I'm sure he'll see it soon.

IDF Recruit Yossi,

You don't know me, but I know you, because I know your Mom. I'm one of many, many other friends she has at FreeRepublic.com, and indeed, nationwide, here in America.

We have been informed you are even now ready to enter basic training and the ranks of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) of the Nation of Israel. If you get this before you report for induction, fine, if not, I'm sure you will see it in due time.

You are entering the ranks of a very unique and well known military organization. I have studied the history of the IDF to some extent, so have many here at Free Republic. Needless to say, the IDF has captured the imagination of the people of America, whether they have served in our own military, or have supported it from the perimeter. Remember, these are the same people of renown whose reputation and respect in the eyes of the nations drove the notorious and feared Hussein into a hole in the ground in terror and dread.

The daring and effective exploits of the IDF over the last sixty-plus years are some that are even more notable than many chronicled in the Bible. Any military veteran or historian is less than adequate to not confer due respect to the members of this formidable military force.

But even beyond that, the IDF is much more. After almost two thousand years of being scattered to the furthest reaches of the nations; relegated to second class status, persecuted and harassed, robbed, tormented, and killed, the Jewish people have miraculously maintained their identity, culture, language, and faith—and have finally returned to the Land of Promise. Still, many globally would have them stay subjugated to that "slave mentality" and second class status.

Yet, the Lord has other plans, even as He did concerning Pharaoh, and the men and women of IDF are the vanguard of that return of Jewish sovereignty, freedom, dignity, self-respect and honor; a tangible witness of this in the face of a still hostile and sullen world. The recent flyover of the IAF F15's over the Auschwitz death camp in Poland is further symbolic manifestation of that.

It is a professional and high class outfit, and a visible representation of the Lord's protection and covering over His people as He continues to fulfill His promises, and work in the House of Israel to return, restore, and bring them to that place He wants them to be.

Now you are going to be a part of that, and along with your family, I think that is a wonderful, wonderful thing. And so will many here at Free Republic, I'm sure.

May G-d stir in you the heart and spirit of Joshua, Caleb, David, Joab—and certainly Jonathan Netanyahu. May you excel in training, in advanced infantry training, and further in your duty ahead. May you develop shrewdness, cunning, wisdom, and the desire to spend much time in the presence of honorable and great men, that in due time you can attain greatness. May He grant you skill with weapons and tactics; likewise as a professional soldier in the ranks of His army may you model justice and judgment, balanced with mercy and compassion.

So may G-d watch over you and protect you every day. May the thoughts and prayers of the multitude of your Mom's friends, both Jewish and Christian, encompass His Throne, and keep you safe in the times ahead. So be it.

In Agape, Mike ~

It's a Jewish custom - you never write the complete name of G-d where it might be defaced - and many freepers (including yours truly) are Jewish or students of Judaism.

Extremely thoughtful of you, Mike. All IDF recruits should read both Alouette's and your letters. Sometimes we don't tell those we love and admire that they mean so much to us and our Freedoms, both here and in Israel. Thank you on my part. It is a fine message.

We need to accrue some of those Shields of Strength for the IDF as well. Will broach it to the inventor and see if they can be done with the Israeli Flag as well. They are extremely uplifting.

It is not a Freeper Thing, but a Rabbinical teaching that to spell out God is a holy thing, and to do so on paper is not giving God enough respect. It goes a lot deeper than I have stated it, but that is the gist of it. Many Freepers do it out of respect to our Jewish friends here.

I live over here and have become a bit onery about it. I figure to not spell out God, and to ignore his name is dissin God. So I have decided not to play along.

It is not required that non-Jews follow the Rabbi's rulings on this. Secular Jews do not have a problem with it either. To me, as a Christian, Rabbi's are rather Rabid about the Law, normally they twist a law by mans logic until it becomes about 180 degrees out of phase. Its a mankind thing, not a Jewish thing, heck, we Christians do it worse than them, and 10x as fast.

Feel free to comply or not as per your flavor of thought...

Been doin' it that way since I was old enough to go to Heder. It's one of those things that came from I Am that I Am. No Name ever given, none spoken.

Hence the *secret* Name of G-d in a Mezuzah. And who knows why that Name was chosen since there was never one given. Tradition. Some never die.
