BOSTON - Temperatures dropped well below zero Saturday across the Northeast, making it the coldest day in a decade for some cities and keeping all but the hardiest people indoors.
St. Johnsbury, Vt., led the list of records Saturday with a low of 27 below zero, the National Weather Service (news - web sites) said.
Boston's Logan International Airport recorded a low of 3 below zero, two degrees chillier than the previous record for Jan. 10, set in 1875. It was the city's coldest day since Jan. 16, 1994, when thermometers registered 4 below.
As he stood on a street corner Saturday, Jim Konda said that since moving from Alabama 20 years ago, he has "learned about layers."
Jeff Davis, 24, hurrying to work Saturday in downtown Boston, longed for San Diego. That city's forecast high Saturday: 69 degrees.
Other record lows included 19 below zero at Montpelier, Vt.; 16 below at Syracuse, N.Y.; 7 below at Scranton, Pa.; and 2 below at Bridgeport, Conn., according to the National Weather Service.
Rochester, N.Y., had its coldest morning since Jan. 16, 1994, with a record 12 below zero. New York City's La Guardia and Kennedy airports also set records for the day at 2 degrees above zero.
Atop New Hampshire's Mount Washington, elevation 6,288 feet, the Web site for the Mount Washington Observatory reported a low of 29 below, an improvement from the reading of 38 below posted late Friday.
By comparison, Chicago was almost mild Saturday morning with a temperature of 19, up from Tuesday's low of 5 below zero.
"For Chicago, it's not too bad," Chicago resident Kevin Hail said as he walked to the train station. "I've been here since 1986, and Lord, I've seen some cold weather."

You ever notice how they never discuss global warming when the weather gets cold...

When I saw, "27 below in Vermont" I thought they were referring to Dean's IQ in relation to 100 or average or something.
I always say one thing each winter in times like these:
Global Warming My A$$!

You ever notice how they never discuss global warming when the weather gets cold... Wish I could find that political cartoon that shows two Yankee New Englander types sitting around a potbellied stove. One says to the other "Ya want to go ahead and throw some more Kyoto Accords in the fire?"
Anyone know where that can be found? Hilarious!

Titans get lucky with a fluke TD late.

I can verify that -2ºF at Bridgeport CT: I'm about 10 miles inland and 500ft up from the shore and I had -6ºF at 5:00AM while taking the pooch out for his needs... But with absolutely no wind (at that time) it wasn't all that bad while I stood still. At a quick walk I could feel the difference on my face but otherwise it wasn't that bad.

Yup it was cold in this part of NY, about 15 below last night. Without a doubt the favorite season of the power companies.

I was sort of counting on global warming to prevent this kind of weather. Those who constantly carp about global warming should do a better job of managing expectations. I was very disappointed when I saw that it was 1º this morning.
I know the homeless are disappointed too.

it's unseasonably hot if the jet stream is north of us and unseasonably cold if it goes south of us. Local paper actually called this unseasonable. haven't seen the scientists claim global warming shoves the jet stream around.
last night it was 3 degrees (central NJ) and I think the coldest last winter was 18. When I was a kid hit zero or below every winter; first frost was the end of September not October; real cold set in early December not January. Winter has definitely done a shift here. Summers seem the same though.

It was 25 below here in Central Vermont last night. I can tell when it's that cold becaue the cold water pipe in my bathtub freezes up. Luckily that particular pipe seems to freeze and thaw without breaking. We took the dogs for a couple of miles walk around noon yesterday, at it never got above 5 below.
It will be mostly below zero here for the next 10 days, according to the forecast (which only goes out to 10 days), except that on Monday it will rise to a high of 26 due to a snow storm.
The night before last was 20 below, and I woke up around 5:00 AM to the realization that the power was off. Luckily they got it fixed before the pipes froze. Definitely chilly.

Actually they do, and they blame the cold on global warming (I kid you not).
Global Warming is the Perfect Theory. No *matter* what the weather is, it supports the theory.
Rains too much = global warming
Rains too little = global warming
Too hot = global warming
Too cold = global warming

No, but I would love to see it . It is -18 on my "sun" porch now. I am going to put fake logs on the fireplace, bake lots of goodies, freep and work on new genealogy program. I will not set foot outside. Global warming in the Adirondacks is making my fuel oil man happy.
