Thanks. You answered the question thouroughly. The response from my seat neighbor on the plane was that vegetable fertilizer is often made with animal byproducts.

Rather than buy meat, particularly hamburger, from multi-national conglomerates, we are buying it from local people who live and work in the community. We've been doing that for several years now. When I realized that hamburger sold in the large chains was produced in plants in huge bulk amounts, and often contaminated with ecoli to boot, I started buy meat at a small local store that cuts and grinds its own meat.

I'm with you on that.
You might start with the environmentalists. I understand part of the problem was orignially caused by the dilemma of what to do with all the carcasses as their incineration contributed to noxious air quality.
Here is something to know:
Organic cattle ranching is not new. It is not new at all, as a matter of fact it was the way America treated all cattle more than 50 years ago.
Pay 20% more at the market for organic beef and insure yourself and family against disease. Demand your grocer sell you only ***certified*** organic beef.

Good article, thanks for the ping -- adds factual depth to a topic that has become highly skewed by USDA and beef industry politics.

I found a place in southern Arizona that does monthly deliveries to Phoenix. The cattle is grass-fed and hormone free. Their prices are $1. more per pound than the stores. Going to try them out in the next two weeks.

vegetable fertilizer is often made with animal byproducts. I believe that bone and blood meal are even approved for use in the production of certified organic produce.
Wonder what the vegans think of that?

I wonder if there's any relationship between CJD and Alzheimer's or other dementias?

I have to force myself to stop reading this topic. I don't want to become absolutely grossed out to meat.
I love my Steak. I'll take my chances and remain ignorant on this topic from now on. I have a roast to get ready for dinner.
However, could someone please Ping me if a lot of people start to get seriesly sick from meat. Thanks :)

And many vegetables are sprayed with a solution that does not rinse off- apparently you need to wash veggies with mild detergent before eating them. ( No more "sampling" of grapes in the grocery store...)
To: twigs
We rarely eat ground meat from any animal (although Mr. Lu does love his meatloaf), but I have a suggestion for you. If you eat a lot of ground meat, invest in either a stand mixer (Kitcheaid) with a grinder attachment or an old fashioned meat grinder. Buy the cuts you want from a reputable butcher and grind them yourself.
