CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

We welcomed one into our family last July 23rd. Bodee took some getting use to, tried our patience, and stoled our hearts.

Very playful, energetic, stubborn, smart and loving. I work at home and have invested lots of time with her. She's learned what we expect of her, and is getting better by the day. Pic was taken 9-16-03.

The puppy is gonna be sold at the store anyway, or worse get euthanized by the breeder. Better that the breed rescue folks get it, spay/neuter it and place it in a screened home than to let it go to someone who might not take care of it and abandon it. I'm for healthy breeds and responsible breeders, I loathe pet stores and the junk they sell. Yep, the puppymill gets money, but, its good for a for a small population breed.

No, I wouldn't define one as crappy, just refering to bad genetics. I would take in a dog that was messed up because I love dogs, but I would damn sure feel better that its genes weren't being spread.

The vet swears that Doxies are the worst!

If you look at the list, all of the dogs are Big. Little dogs bite far more often. It's just that smaller, less serious bites don't get reported.

My personal idea of a "worst dog" is a Lhasa.

I think Newfoundlands are majestic...I very strongly agree about the reputable breeder comments. I did look at them for a possibility here, but we have a very hot summer.

We do live way in the boonies, bears and panthers in the neighborhood have preyed on friends' livestock. I've had rattlers in my east garden, a beautiful landscaped place at the edge of the woods...

Since either of us are likely to be outside at any given time in nice weather, and since we have state land for miles all around us, we need a large dog. Pup is getting old--he's nine, and in good health, but we don't know the future. I was looking for a good indoor/outdoor dog that would be protective if I'm outside alone with just my little rifle. I'm considerably smaller than the calf taken by panthers last year, down the road, and the bear that ate my other neighbor's goat feed.

The American Mastiff has the size, and looks like probably the temperament, to fit in. Breeder recommended neutering so there won't be problems with Pup, also requires it for breed protection. Pup is perfectly behaved in the house, and quiet, never leaves out side outdoors, protective and tolerant of the grandkids, and I'm hoping the American Mastiff is the same.

People should never chain up dogs in my most Betty White opinion. Nor would I ever own a pit bull.

Yep, Missouri summers can be murder. From what I've read, Anatolian Shepherds handle the heat as well or better than any other breed. Very tough, long-lived, no slobber, very protective, and extraordinarily healthy and agile for its size.

Ever heard of a Boerboel? I just found out about them recently. South African dog, with ancient Mastiff blood. They look amazing. And if you haven't already seen the Molosserworld site (that my above Boerboel link is on), it's worthy checking out. All the big breeds of the world are featured, and many rare ones. www.moloss.com

My friend has one, he got it from someone who couldn't handle it.

The newspaper's always got "free to good home, 1 yr old Akita". Usually male. People fail to realize that along with independence, attitude, dog aggression, and plain old hard headedness, they are getting a dog with a 2 yr puppyhood. And adolescence is a lot of work. If you don't want to work, don't get an Akita.

We use the mild abrasive coated chew bones for our German Shepard. Keeps those chops razor sharp. Throw a football at my dog, is like a balloon hitting a dart.

Actually, you misquoted me

No, I didn't. I quoted you verbatum:

westies have a higher rate of deafness than other breeds.

It is reasonable to assume that you are saying... westies have a higher rate of deafness than other breeds... including other white breeds. and you said

Its a genetic trait for white coated dogs.

I'll give that it's at least confusing as it indicates at one time you are claiming white dogs (I assume all white dogs) have the genetic trait yet you seem to be saying westies have a higher rate than all breeds which would include other white breeds. Maybe you meant to say westies have a higher rate of deafness than some other breeds (which would be correct, though still misleading).

I was merely alluding to the fact that most breed books point out that the westie has congenital deafness reported for the breed.

That's a far cry from claiming that "The westie is a breed that has a higher rate of cogenital deafness than other breeds." Did you look at the table I linked to which makes the statement that "dogs of any breed can have congenital deafness" and also indicates there are 81 breeds with reported congenital deafness and the westie is not included in the category of "relative high prevalence." You can google the internet and find a lot of stuff. I prefer to go to the experts on the subject and I gave you those links... the organization that knows the breed best and would have disputed your original claim as worded.

Huh? Can anyone explain that to me?

Have some heartless, soulless thug chain you to a pole outrside in the weather permitting you food and water only at sporadic intervals for a few weeks. Then come back and tell me if you understand yet.

People who chain dogs to a stake in their yard as an alarm system are not really people. IMO.

"JRT's have their own agenda when it comes to house breaking, some are never successfully trained."

My carpet will attest to that. Also had to replace our mattress. Mine is a JRT/Beagle mix.

Oh get over yourself and learn to read. I said westies have a higher rate of deafness than other breeds. Not other white breeds. It is not reasonable to assume (remember what they say about making assumptions?) that I meant white breeds. Did you ever take english in school?

True fact, Westies have, instances of deafness, any dog breed book will point that out. Not all breeds of dogs have the same instances.

Learn to read and learn to argue logically, I tried to be nice to you, but you just can't seem to understand me. Rather, you want to take words out of context or assume I said something that I didn't or take an assumption off of one thing I said and ascribe it to another. But no, evidently reading comprehension wasn't a driving interest in your life.

I am through arguing with you because if I said the sky was blue, you would assume I said red and try to mount an argument.

Say, I just looked at that boerboel link, and those are beautiful dogs...slightly smaller in the body than the American Mastiff, but similar in appearance...you can see the mastiff blood...

Our friend with the Neapolitan Mastiff said that he came home one day and found his house all torn up, blood on the carpet, and his dog sitting at the bottom of a tree outside with the second burglar clinging to a high branch. The first guy, who was evidently bitten and injured, got away...they were armed, but the second burglar said he didn't have a chance to shoot the dog (thank God!) and said the dog didn't even bark, just took them by surprise.
