Apart from Iraq, what on Earth did the French do?

Posted on 01/14/2004 5:23:23 PM PST by Fox on the Run

Yes, it's me the naive Aussie again.

The last message from my last post on imperial measurements said "the french developed the metric system, and that in and of itself is reason enough not to use it"

This question probably sounds very naive, but what did the French do except disagree with Bush over Iraq?

After all, Jefferson's ideas of a free, liberal, independent America were derived almost entirely from French liberalism (Voltaire, Montesquieu)

Washington's men were supported big time by the French(and to a lesser extent, by the Spaniards). In fact, many historians believe Washington couldn't have beaten the British without French weapons.

Even the Stars and Stripes are in the French colours!!!

Even one of your states is named after a French king, not to mention who gave you the Statue of Liberty.

You can even thank the French for driving on the right hand side of the road (to us Aussies' great annoyance)

From an outsider's perspective, the US historically seems to owe France a lot for being the country it is today

So, apart from Iraq, what did the French do?

PS: I am not French. Thanks to their nuclear tests in the Pacific, we're not to keen on the French either down here. But the US' attitude to France recently has me confused nonetheless.

They wouldn't let US bombers fly over their country when we bombed Libya in 1986.

Something like what God told Job when he ask, "why me lord?". God answered, "something about you just pisses me off".

It is not that the French disagreed with us over Iraq. There were other nations that disagreed, and we have no problem with that. Well, little problem with that.

It is the fact that the French did every conniving little trick they could think of, including threatening disaproval of EU memberships and bribing other countries to undermine a united front against Saddam. If it had not been for that, who knows what could have been accomplished without going to war.

In addition, they did this because of the illegal dealings they had with Saddam. They dealt with him for money, and opposed the US to cover it up.

As well, they have compromised efforts to capture and detain individuals who are suspected of attempting terrorist activities.

I believe these actions, in themselves, would be enough to cast doubt on their claims of "ally". But above and beyond all that, they smell.

Bad.

Exactly. Too bad it's in the wrong direction.

They badly need a latter-day Charles Martel.

Yes, and we paid them back in spades with a little something called WW I and WW II. This is/was our great hour of need, and the surrender monkeys turned their backs on the people of this country. Why did the french govt. do this? To protect their economic interest in the form of Saddam Hussein. They are vile, and to borrow a term from Monty Python, I spit in their general direction.
