The Spectator is right: the Dems are playing for 2008...so who do WE want to run in 2008

OK, gang.

Barring a catastrophe or another 9/11 attack, it's pretty much a given that President Bush will be re-elected in just under 10 months from today. That's been already listed here on FR today. And Jay Currie has a VERY good point. The Dems KNOW they've already lost this election, and are using it to position for 2008 and, God Help Us, Hillary.

Who do we have / want who is in position to run for the Republican nomination in 2008 ???

Given that President Bush would want to have his successor continue his policies, who you all of you think is a worthy successor to George W. Bush, and our best defense against the Hildebeast ???

Hey - I take exception to the look alike contest between my guy, JD Hayworth and former Bears coach Mike Ditka! JD is a solid conservative, is head of the powerful Ways and Means committee in the House AND he knows the issues about illegal immigrants because he represent a BORDER state: AZ! I still pick JD Hayworth and Condi Rice for Pres/VP in '08! But I also like Rick Santorum too and wouldn't mind CO's gov Owens - forget Jeb Bush in '08! I see him in the senate in '06!

Well, I promoted two people to the other house of Congress! -- I just assumed: "Nixon wanted someone who would work well with Congress, so he chose Ford who was Republican leader of the . . ." "Before Bush's appointment, he had been elected by the people of Texas as . . ."

Same principle applies, though.

I don't think that Hitlery, or any other woman for that matter, will be able to get a Presidential win in 2008.

I know what you mean, but would caution you. There is footage of a television interview conducted in the early 1970s when Margaret Thatcher was asked if she would ever see a women Prime Minister, she said not in her lifetime, and was P.M. by the end of the decade.

In 1975 it was claimed that the Conservative Party was not ready for a woman leader. She won.

Thereafter it was claimed that the country was not ready for a woman Prime Minister. She won the 1979 election, stayed in office until 1990 (she became the longest serving P.M. since Lord Liverpool in the early 19th century), and she stood alongside President Reagan and faced down the Evil Empire.

When a strong woman candidate presents herself (and we must admit that Sen. Clinton is that) the issue will die just as soon as the votes are cast. That said, electors tend to prefer these things to come from the right rather than the left. The British Conservative Party produced the first ethnically Jewish P.M. (Disraeli), the first batchelor P.M. (Sir Edward Heath), the first woman P.M. (Lady Thatcher), the first Catholic leader (Iain Duncan Smith), and now the first practising Jewish leader hopefully soon to become first Jewish P.M. (Michael Howard).

Condi Rice is an awful choice for Prez.
Wonderful woman and it's a great story, but she lacks the background needed.

Dont even think of running someone for Pres unless they've run a lower office and succeeded, or at least won a war.

And no. Kosovo doesnt count, Gen'l Clark, you unqualified boob!

Sorry he's correct. Condi running will depress conservative turnout.

Someone who is not a clear known conservative will fail to ignite grassroots energy. As a result the turnout will be down. Hillary OTOH generates liberal excitement for some strange reason. A "nice" candidate that doesnt fight tooth and nail will be KO'ed by Hillary and the slime machine.

Condi would likely be an electoral disaster.

The whole concept reeks of the kind of 'cute' folly the dems tried in Texas in 2002 - their "dream team" of nice diverse candidates ... all of whom went down in flames because people are smarter than that, voting the candidate and not the cover. Now the Texas Dems have 0 out of 29 satewide offices.

"Well -- Condi is pro abortion -- so that should fracture the party and insure the victory of Hillary."

Good point. Condi also was instrumental in stopping Bush from being against the U of Michican racial preferences.

"Governor Bill Owens of Colorado."

I am so proud to say I voted for him just before moving out of Colorado.

I'm glad to hear he's done a great job. I knew he would.

:)

"Haven't looked into Bill Owens that much, but George Allen would be high up on my list. If I was to pick a candidate to run in 2008, it would be someone who could continue to carry the torch on the WOT and do something about the illegal immigration problem. "

I agree - George Allen would be great.

He's been both a Governor and a Senator.

I also like Rick Santorum, and I like the suggestions of Pawlenty, he seems like a great guy too. And Christopher Cox I always thought highly of.

...so who do WE want to run in 2008

A candidate who actually believes The Constitution is the God-given law.

Not a candidate who ignores it.

Haley Barbour was an awesome GOP Chair in the mid1990s - he led the victory in the Congress.

I have been mostly unimpressed with GOP chairs since.

I think as a southerner, he has some electoral disadvantage on the national stage, because northerners can be a bit bigotted towards the south.
He'd make a good Veep pick. Not that mississippi or the south would be in play, but he is quite articulate but in a good-ol-boy way that would help any campaign.

"Condi also was instrumental in stopping Bush from being against the U of Michican racial preferences."

If I may nitpick, Bush's Justice Dept. argued against the UM affirmative-action program because it wasn't "narrowly tailored." However, because of Condi and other prominent advisers, Bush did not oppose the use of diversity as a legitimate state interest in college admissions, thus permitting affirmative-action programs that are "narrowly tailored."

Dittos on that - why do we want a moderate heading the ticket in 2008?

Why are we looking at the cover and not the book?

I am 10 times more impressed with guys like Herman Cain
(GA senate candidate) than I am with yet-another-RINO-in-the-tent.

Everyone, dont wait for 2008, and dont waste 2008 on a moderate... 2005-2006 is the CONSERVATIVE MOMENT. We will have to make the most of it!!
