Political Rallies End in Brawl

Two political rallies turned into a brawl Saturday night in Des Moines.

A Democratic rally at Drake's Olmstead Center, urged young Iowans to get out and vote. It was targeted toward high school and college students. A group known for not voting. The rally featured comedian Janene Garafalo and classic rock star Joan Jett, but it got a surprise visit from some unwanted guests.

A group of college republicans at their Midwest caucus leadership conference heard about the rally and stormed in.

"There are seven of us who worked really hard at putting this conference together, said Jason Cole of the college republicans. "so, we met, discussed and majority ruled. We went down there."

What they didn't discuss is what to do if things get out of hand. One of the Bush supporters shoved Jett and she pushed back in anger. Ole said that was the decision of one person, and not at all representative of what the conference was trying to do.

Campus security did show up break things up. The concert did resume as planned. In fact, Jett wrapped up her day with two more performances. One in Fort Dodge, the other in Marshalltown.

Tell the truth, her she tacked that bit about "invading" onto her ever present "Lesbians Against Boys" poster, didn't she?

That was the ONLY report online that described this event. I searched Google News for Joan Jett and Republicans (because of the College Republicans).

Certainly is curious pending further details. If it turns out to be brownshirt Rats in Republican clothing will it get a retraction from the media?

I know. Took me awhile to find that one source after I saw the videotape on my local TV.

That's the importance of posting articles in full on FR, as a historical reference in case something fishy pops up later.

I'm hoping to see a statement from that chapter of college Republicans.

I'd still like to know the identity of the one who did the shoving.

The source link is still offering "Our apologies."

Someone from DU has posted this to Buzzflash in full (no additional details). The original report is not even on Google News now (but Google News considers the Buzzflash Blog a "news" site). Funny how in my correspondence with the operator of Google News, complaints about violent hate speech ("shoot our troops" and "Bush is Hitler" - a phrase denounced by the Simon Weisenthal Center and others) fell on deaf ears because they occurred in the forum portion of DUh and not the "editorial" which is what Google considers "news". Yet here is another discussion blog listed as "news".

I'd like to know the real story of what happened and why the media dropped coverage of this event. What made them change their minds?

Here's the revised article (slightly rewritten and a less dramatic headline):

Political Rally Ends in Shoving Match (Joan Jett article redux)

Still lacking many details.

Even they were straight, they wouldn't be my type. I like a woman with plenty of brains between her ears and a lot hair between her...

Wrong Bush. Sorry.
