Phil Says Expect 6 More Weeks of Winter!

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

On this Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2004, Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, King of the Groundhogs, Prognosticator of Prognosticators has responded to the tapping welcome of Groundhog Club President Bill Cooper at 7:27 a.m. here on Gobbler's Knob, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

He was greeted by his longtime friend and handler Bill Deeley who said, "I bring greetings from Presidents Bush and Cooper." He then held him high so he could view and greet the large exuberant crowd of Faithful Followers.

It was time for Phil to do his job, so Bill placed him atop his old oak stump. After a brief look around he said to President Bill Cooper in Groundhogese: "'~{}||*~^'(^~#:'~-_<>~!" Which President Bill translated to say, "Pick the scroll on the left." Obediently Bill selected it and it states:

"I'm glad I live in this luxurious burrow on the Knob
and not in a dirty, smelly spider hole like a slob.
When I come out I don't want to negotiate;
But to just do my job and prognosticate.

Today because my shadow I see,
six more weeks of winter there will be."

Darn it, Phil. Grumble, grumble. But ya gotta love a patriotic groundhog. No hard feelings, Phil.

Phil, the Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary has promised us six more weeks of winter. I, for one, believe the furry fellow over at Gobbler's Knob.

How do you know it is really Phil at Gobbler's Knob? For most of the year, Phil lives in a climate-controlled home at the Punxsutawney Library. He is taken to Gobbler's Knob and placed in a heated burrow underneath a simulated tree stump on stage before being pulled out around 7:25 a.m. on each Groundhog Day, February 2, to make his prediction.

The furry guy has sopken.

If you're from around the area, you really must go some time.

******

PHIL: Where's everybody going?

PIANO TEACHER: To Gobbler's Knob. It's Groundhog Day.

PHIL: It's still just once a year, isn't it?

Is this disinfo?

The Phil I know is never political. Although he spends alot of time in the Punxsutawney Library, he stays away from the newspapers.

Fess up, is it true? ;)

Not to worry...phil is WRONG this time. (Despite what the propaganda reports he HAS been wrong before!)

In any case I assure you it's going to be a (fairly)early spring. The creatures living in the walls and basement of my house have been stirring for a couple of weeks. A sure sign spring...or at least warmer weather is soon to be here.

If Phil is up on the news like this indicates, I'm going to go up and see him next year! Last time we went up to see him was in 1981 right after Reagan was inaugurated.

I wonder if he knows anything about Osama getting grabbed later on this year!

I was wondering why I hadn't seen Janet Reno lately.

When you are talking about Punxsutawney Phil, "The Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinaire", you MUST capitalize his name. ;)

Why not use the Ground Hog to pick the Democrat's presidential nominee? Hey, it wouldn't be any worse than using the Iowa caucus.

Phil doesn't live in Tennessee. The 'hogs here came out, got rain on their head and went back to bed without seeing their shadow.

"PIANO TEACHER: To Gobbler's Knob. It's Groundhog Day."

Hey, you're right, that WAS the piano teacher. Well spotted.

Oh, now you've said it. I own and operate a small nursery and boy do I have groundhogs. They treat my place as if it is a "salad bar". Some of them must weigh 30 pounds.

You know what's sorta funny about them, although they are destructive as hell. Sometimes I'll be walking out in the grassy areas, and they'll be busy gobbling up weeds and grass, and then they'll hear me and see me. Watching them try to scurry off, the way they try to run fast with those short legs, is pretty funny. I have a love-hate relationship with them. They "trim" about $10,000 worth of hostas every spring, but they come back only to be eaten again.

Anybody see the cartoon strip "Rhymes With Orange" today?

It showed a groundhog calling up another groundhog on his cell phone to complain about Saddam coming to spend the night in his burrow, and there was a little box with an exasperated groundhog saying, "once he nestled in, he was a pain to get rid of."

Well, Phil's brain is about as big as a golf ball, so that would make him at least twice as smart as your average DUer.
