Columbia College Conservative Club to Hold an "Affirmative Action Bake Sale" on February 5th.

For Immediate Release

NEW YORK, NY -- February 4, 2004

On February 5, 2004 the Columbia College Conservative Club (CCCC) will hold an affirmative action bake sale from 12 to 1. This bake sale is not a fundraiser; it is a practical satire of race-based preference policies. It is not intended to demean or offend anyone, but to teach by analogy. If it is offensive for some that a person of a particular race should purchase junk food for less than a member of another group, is it less racist for members of one group to be admitted with fewer qualifications than one in another group? Just as it would be prejudiced to assume that members of communities historically discriminated against are unable to pay the same price as white males, it is even more racist to assume that they are unable to meet the standard admissions requirements of a prestigious university or the hiring standards of a well-known corporation. Racial preferences and set asides are discriminatory, demeaning and divisive. They have a balkanizing effect on campuses, companies, and the country.

We are holding the bake sale at the same time as Columbia's Diversity Recruiting Conference in Lerner Hall to highlight the racially discriminatory policies pressed by the university.

It is our hope that President Bollinger, famous for his support of racial preferences in the Gratz and Grutter Supreme Court cases, will uphold the rights of free speech and civil protest, he has so eloquently defended in his academic and legal briefs.

In 1998, Columbia University used protests by radicals to effectively shut down Accuracy in Academia conference held by the College Republicans. In so doing, the administration not only broke a contract, but also damaged the reputation of the university.

Please join us as we stand up for individual rights and racial equality.

About the Columbia College Conservative Club:

The Columbia College Conservative Club (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/conservative) was founded to promote the ideas of liberty and individual responsibility, which formed the basis of the United States and of our continued freedom and prosperity. For all too many years these ideas have been ignored or attacked on this campus. Our goal at CCCC is to provide the necessary ideological balance to Columbia and to end the 40 years of leftist decline at the university.

I'm guessing the socialist probably didn't buy any cookies...
Nope. We sold some, but only one to a commie. We ate a few. The rest are being frozen for the group meeting on monday.

Good job Rm!

I guess the black militants took the day off today. Wasn't Columbia filled with black militants about 15 years ago?

Excellent work, rm. I love the idea of these bake sales. Even if you've heard of them before, it must be quite different to actually approach the bake sale wanting a cookie and be required to pay according to your location in the Crayola box. Looking forward to the pictures.

We went further.
Columbia is about 25 to 30% Jewish and about 15% asian.
We had white men pay 1.20 annd Jews and Asians pay 1.50.
Of course having the table manned by 2 Jews, on Chinese-American, and one wasp prevent anoyone from calling us racist.

We had fun with the commies. They were arguing that we were racist for opposing discrimination.

Hilarious! What did you charge him? -- No, let me guess, it had to be the highest price possible! Did he call you capitalist pigs as he munched away?

Maybe you'll sell more at the next bake sale if you market them as vegan cookies.

Thanks for the report.

Columbia University's Hidden Saudi Funding

Columbia University failed to report a list of foreign donors to the New York State Department of Education - including a $250,000 donation from an unidentified Saudi Arabian - more than five months after it was required to do so by law.

"I'm really bored with this whole bake sale thing."

Its a saner alternative to armed insurrection.

We got some rather biased coverage from the school paper: Bake Sale Prompts Debate In Lerner.
to quote Mark's response to the article:
They ignored completely the asians that were rooting us on before the socialists arrived. Like it or not, asians (particularly males) are very cognizant that they get the shaft when it comes to college admissions on the basis of affirmative action, and often lay the blame on students they percieve to have gotten an easy ride. One place where Affirmative action serves only to perpetuate racism.

It also shows the effect that the socialists had. By showing up andbasically screaming that we were racists and facists, they managed to stifle any sort of intellectual discussion. I found it interesting to talk with anyone else; but with the iso it was like talking to a wall.

"It's all racist, man! When kids in brooklyn get shot by cops we need affirmative action to compensate!"
"How does getting more minorities into Columbia solve the supposed problem of cops targeting blacks?"
"It's all a system, man!"

_sigh_

It is always scary to run into people who make the current crop of Democrat candidates seem sane.

How about a nice game like Affirmative Action Jeopardy?

This is a terrific idea. I wonder if the minorities would even catch on that their questions were easier. They usually seem to find a way to miss the point of these kinds of things.

According to today's on-line Spectator, the CCCC (Columbia College Conservative Club?) has apologized for the bake sale.

Do you know anything about this?

We apologised for any misinterpritation of the event as a racist attack. We also explained our position. (Although I am a grad, I say "our" because I was there with the brownies) None of this was covered in the Spectator.
I am writting a response to 2 articles and an editorial that ran today. Below is the message I sent out to the group.

----------------------------------
If you are on campus and have not read the current edition of the Spectator, I suggest that you do so. You can also read the articles online.

STAFF EDITORIAL: Reactions to Racism
The editorial’s claim that one must walk a mile in the shoes of a minority is condescending. Since when are 3 Jews and one Asian not ethnic minorities?
However, even if the people running the Bake sale had all been WASPs, we still know what it is like to be a minority. Conservatives are the one minority that can be discriminated against. Professors mock us in class and in forums. In many departments there is not even a token conservative for the pretence of ideological balance. I would suggest that the smug editors of the Spectator try being ideological minorities on campus for a bit, before they create a hostile learning environment for conservatives.

The editorial shows a compete lack of understanding of our argument. Regardless of the speech from the impeached and disbarred former President Clinton, our event was an attack at the systemic racism at Columbia. We were making fun of institutional bias and racial discrimination hiding under the pretence of racial diversity.

As if to underline our status as minorities, President Bollinger took time from his national campaign to defend intuitional bias to condemn us. Bollinger Speaks Out Against 'Offensive Speech'
I must say that the bias of this article was astounding. Not once did they bother to quote a member of C4 or look at our apology. We were simply made to look guilty, as if we were the ones judging by race.

This one sided “reporting” was repeated in an article on the protest against our event and other “racist” incidents:
Close to 300 Stage Silent Protest on Steps Groups Link Cartoon to Bake Sale, Fliers

I believe that some kind of response is warranted. At the very least we should send in a formal letter to the editor.
