"CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY" ENDORSES GAY/LESBIAN BI-SEXUAL LIFESTYLE

Queer eye screens straight campus

Gay group hosts its first fest at ND

Notre Dame. Queer Film Festival.

David Pais thought he'd never see the day.

"I was at Notre Dame in the Dark Ages," Pais, a 1972 graduate of the university, recalled with a laugh. "I wasn't even out. The idea of having a festival on campus that would help students understand their sexual orientation ... would have been incredibly enlightening.

"But the campus has made some significant changes since I was there," adds Pais, now of Brooklyn, N.Y. He's co-chairman of the Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association of the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College, a nationwide organization of some 875 members.

This week, Pais and his fellow organizers of the Notre Dame Queer Film Festival -- a first for the university -- will find out whether this historically conservative campus is really ready to embrace the cause of gay and lesbian inclusion.

Several university departments have joined the alumni group in putting money and energy behind the festival, resulting in an impressive guest list: Don Roos, the Notre Dame graduate who directed and wrote the successful independent film "The Opposite of Sex"; Dan Bucatinsky, writer and star of the gay romantic comedy "All Over the Guy"; representatives from the Equality Forum and Young Gay America; and filmmaker/performer John Cameron Mitchell, best known for "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." Panel discussions and a screenwriting workshop (the latter led by Roos) will round out the week's events.

Being different a gift

He doesn't shock easily, but the invitation to bring "Hedwig" to a gay film festival at Notre Dame did come as a surprise to Mitchell, who grew up Catholic. He said he's never been asked to talk about gay film on any college campus. But while he welcomes the opportunity, he's a little suspicious of the categorical label.

"Hedwig wasn't specifically a gay film. Our audience was completely mixed," Mitchell said, talking recently by phone from his home in New York. "Though certainly it has gay themes, people found the character -- because it was so specific, you could say it was real. People could find it universal. They could see it as a fairy tale and as a myth.

"That's the point, really -- not to pander to any specific groups," he added, pointing to the unfortunate number of "gay" films that don't happen to be good films. "It's about telling something true. If it's true, and it comes from the heart, people respond to it."

As for gay-themed programming on television, Mitchell said most of the shows are so obsessed with superficial aspects of the "lifestyle" that he finds them more embarrassing than affirming.

"Come on. Gay used to be non-conformist," he said. "To me, it was a privilege to question all kinds of norms. To me, being a freak, being different is a gift."

Beacon of hope

A gay or lesbian student on a campus such as Notre Dame might not always think so. They have access to counseling and other resources gay students of Pais' generation did not enjoy, but to this day there is no officially sanctioned organization supporting gays and lesbians on campus; nor do they have an established place in the campus culture.

For these and other displaced students, Mitchell hopes the Queer Film Festival and "Hedwig" in particular will serve as a beacon of hope and understanding.

"Let the uniqueness of this film inspire your own uniqueness," he said. It's a lesson Mitchell intends to drive home with the post-screening Q & A.

"I'll only answer questions I've never been asked before. People always ask me things like, 'How did you come up with Hedwig?' I want to hear something else," he said, laughing. "I plan to throw some bombs. But hopefully love bombs."

When Pais looks back on his own years at Notre Dame, he often thinks of a "love bomb" that fell on him from an unexpected source.

"One of the things I remember I learned at Notre Dame, and it's stayed with me: I heard a priest say, 'It doesn't matter who you love but that you love,'" Pais recalled. "I think that has served me well."

Just so you don't think ND is discriminating, the VAGINA MONOLOGUES will be on campus during this same week.

When will this madness stop??!!! I'll take "the DARK AGES" anyday over this Sodom and Gomorrah world.

They're just besotted with sex. Their whole lives are about sex, their world is about sex. They're addicts trying to pretend they're normal. It amazes me the amount of newsprint expended on these marginal compulsive addicts.

I'm so sick of this cr*p...I'd haul water and go back to horse and buggies any day.

It's not going to stop. It's just going to get worse. My son has never spent any amount of time in a large city, and while reading through a Fromme's travel page it mentioned Boston's large gay population in a certain area.

GREAT. Please God, shield his eyes. Mainly to keep his innocence, also because that's something I just don't want to have to explain. Geeeeeezz.

Notre Dame has been taking it's cues from the Academy rather than the Gospels for a long time now.

The priest and the faculty are big Democratic supporter. A graduation doesn't go by when they aren't celebrating some pro-abortion person.

The alumni have their heads in the sand. They give their money and their children to the University hoping that the wonderful place they experienced is still there, but they've given their money but not their attention.

but they've given their money but not their attention.

Then the University taught them how to make money not values or critical thought.

They have a dysfunctional sex fetish. They see things from a distorted world view. It's like the rest of us normal people see the boat leaving the shore, the mentally ill see the shore leaving the boat.
They don't know they're mentally ill, and they have the Socialist dictators on the bench using them as useful idiots to create social chaos. Only through social breakdown could a socialist revolution take place. If a socialist revolution were to occur, the useless eaters and dysfunctional would be the first to be eliminated.

Homosexuality is also against natural law. There's not one other life form on the planet that's naturally homosexual. Some plants are hermaphroditic and produce their own seed, but that's as close as it gets. Nature will eliminate the homosexuals naturally. Nature sees them as a disease. That's where AIDs comes in, but it's working too slowly because man has intrerfeared. Another disease will naturally come along that will do the job. It always has. Nature cleanses itself.

Why can't Catholic Universities just be Catholic? Don't we have freedom of religion, speech and association in this country anymore? Why does every single private institution have to conform to the prevailing liberal dogmas?

Why does every single private institution have to conform to the prevailing liberal dogmas?

Fascist litigation. They go around the will of the American people, and have their dictators on the bench force us to obey.
That's why the homosexuals fear the voting booth. Liberals fear the booth for every policy they have. None would pass the conscience of the American citizen. It has to be forced upon them. Yes, it's fascist, but that's why the voters have to get patriots back on the benches. Liberal judges are making our laws for us. Impeaching them is way over due.

'VAGINA MONOLOGUES' CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY

Cardinal Newman Society has launched a nationwide protest of the "Vagina Monologues," a vulgar and sexually explicit play that is planned for 30 Catholic campuses in the weeks surrounding Saint Valentine's Day (Feb.14).

The list of planned performances announced by V-Day, the national group that has licensed campus productions at more than 500 schools this year, includes prominent institutions like Boston College, DePaul, Georgetown, Loyola of Chicago, Loyola Marymount and the University of Notre Dame.

Already Cardinal Newman Society's campaign against the play has had an impact. Productions have been canceled at 15 Catholic colleges and universities this year, several prompted by letters, phone calls and e-mails urging administrators to ban "Vagina Monologues."  Cardinal Newman Society praised college officials who interceded and banned the play at the Catholic University of America (Washington, DC), Emmanuel College (Boston, MA), Loyola University of New Orleans (LA), St. Ambrose University (Davenport, IA), St. John's University (Queens, NY), St. Joseph's College (Rensselaer, IN), the University of Portland (OR), the University of St. Francis (Joliet, IL), and Wheeling Jesuit University (WV).

"These leaders stood against political correctness in defense of their students' spiritual and mental health," said Patrick Reilly, President of Cardinal Newman Society.  "They deserve the praise and support of all faithful Catholics."  Following the campaign, "Catholic Higher Education Alert" will provide contact information for college leaders who canceled the play, urging subscribers to send thank-you letters.

The campaign has fared even better than last year, when 32 Catholic colleges and universities hosted or sponsored "Vagina Monologues" and 14 productions were canceled.

"Vagina Monologues" presents women discussing their sexuality and sexual encounters, replete with vulgarity, explicit language, and graphic descriptions of lesbian activity and masturbation.

One scene describes the seduction of a sexually inexperienced 16-year-old girl by a 24-year-old lesbian, who first intoxicates the girl with vodka. Instead of presenting the incident as sexual abuse that would be illegal in many states, the play declares it the girl's "surprising, unexpected and politically correct salvation."

"I am appalled and embarrassed that any Catholic institution would present this play, especially in the midst of the clergy sex abuse scandal," Reilly said.  "Whether the perpetrator is a lesbian woman or a wayward priest, seduction of a minor is no one's 'salvation.'  I would hope that word has a much different meaning for Catholic students and educators."

V-Day, an organization founded by author Eve Ensler to help fight violence against women, licenses productions of "Vagina Monologues" to students and faculty at more than 500 college campus nationwide.  Cardinal Newman Society wrote to the presidents of all U.S. Catholic colleges and universities on December 17, 2003, urging them to investigate and halt planned performances announced by V-Day.  The Society also calls on its members and other concerned Catholics to contact college presidents where productions are planned.  Contact information, a sample letter and campaign updates are posted on the Society's website at www.cardinalnewmansociety.org.

Cardinal Newman Society opposes all campus productions of "Vagina Monologues," regardless of whether they are formally approved or funded by the college or university. The Society also opposes off-campus performances by official student clubs.

Although many of the productions are organized by students, several are sponsored or co-sponsored by faculty in a wide range of academic departments including Communications, English, Political Science, Social Work, Theater and Women's Studies.  At Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, the play is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry.  Student attendance at the performance at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, is counted toward "merit points" used to assign campus housing the following year.

But often faculty and students are divided over the controversial productions.  University of Notre Dame Law professor Charles Rice wrote in the campus newspaper, The Observer: "I hope that our leaders will reconsider this failure of judgment and cancel this third performance [in the last three years].  If not, all the responsible administrators, from the top down, should resign their administrative positions.  If they do not resign, they should be removed.  Baseball has it right: Three strikes
and you're out."

All campus performances raise funds for organizations that fight violence against women-a worthy cause, except when recipient organizations also oppose Catholic teaching by advocating abortion.  One beneficiary of the events last Friday and Saturday at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, was Planned Parenthood.  Although the funds were intended for Planned Parenthood's rape crisis center, the organization is the largest abortion provider in the U.S.  The John Carroll University event will support the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, which advocates abortion rights as a member organization of the Freedom of Choice Cleveland Coalition.

U. NOTRE DAME HOSTS GAY FILM FESTIVAL

The University of Notre Dame (IN) is hosting the first ND Queer Film Festival, which began yesterday and runs through Saturday.  (See www.nd.edu/~lsayre/NDQFF.)  Films include "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," described as an "anatomically incorrect rock odyssey," and "Go Fish," a movie about a young lesbian seeking love.  Although Notre Dame has refused to recognize a homosexual student club, it has allowed the film festival because it is co-sponsored by an academic department, the Department of Film, Television and Theatre.  Funding for the event comes from GALA, an association of homosexual Notre Dame alumni.  To protest, contact: Rev. Someone needs to form an Orphaned Alumni Organization for guys who graduated from ND, Holy Cross, John Carroll and Boston College. Instead of their Alma Mater, they would doante to a fund run by Father Fessio who would distribute it to deserving school like Ave Maria and Christendom.

Whenver a donation is made to the Orphaned Alumni Fund, a note would be sent to the alumnist's school telling the school that it would not be getting any money.
