Ban on dog-eating 'racist'

February 17, 2004 A SOUTH Australian independent MP says he will oppose a bill banning the eating of dogs and cats in the state, as it plays on racist fears.

Under legislation proposed by the state government, anyone caught eating a cat or a dog would be fined $1250.

But independent MP Kris Hanna said there was no legitimate reason to outlaw such practices.

"Apart from the principles underlying vegetarianism, there does not appear to be any justification at all for this bill," Mr Hanna said in a statement.

"The force behind it is racism, it plays upon unfounded fears about people from our own cultures who have different eating habits to our own."

Well, this presents a quandry for the ACLU/PETA crowd. Guess they won't be holding any joint fundraisers in the near future.

"... no legitimate reason ..."

He is absolutely correct! The govt of (fill in the blank) has no "right" to ban anyone from eating a particular animal just because it is thought of as a pet by someone else.

Cows are revered in India - actually so are rats & monkeys, etc. And rats, monkey, goat, even fuzzy little Guinea Pigs are eaten - in fact raised as food in other parts of the world! Ever have Kentuky-Fried-Monkey-on-a-stick?

Delicious!

So lets hear it from the PETA/ALF/ELF/ etc here on FR! There are a bunch!

I wouldn't bet the farm on that.

These sod eaters don't give up. Always trying to make race the issue when race isn't the issue.

However, if someone tries to eat my dog the worms will have a good feast the day it was tried.

Why are they putting a ban on eating dogs? If someone wants to and they raise dogs and kill them humanely like how we do so for cattle then why not? I wouldn't eat dog, but what's the big deal? Why are they trying to ban it?

Aaaarrrgh! If I had to eat dog meat, I'd be a vegetarian!

Saint Bernards end up as Chinese takeaway

28 May 2003

BONN - The noble Saint Bernard, self-sacrificing symbol of hope to
generations of Alpine climbers and skiers, increasingly is ending up in the
dog meat
slaughter houses of eastern Asia, according to an alarming report by
German conservationists.

The Bonn office of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)
issued a warning this week to breeders of pure-bred dogs in Western
Europe, particularly breeders of big and beefy Saint Bernards.

Breeders should be aware that enquiries from potential buyers in Asia
often are fronts for illicit dog meat slaughtering operations. These
unscrupulous buyers are not the least bit interested in a champion dog's
bloodline or
the number of medals it has won. Instead they are only interested in how much
tasty muscle there is on the bone.

"In China, Saint Bernards are imported so that they can be cross-bred
with native dogs to produce large and beefy meat dogs," says WSPA Bonn office
head Martin Riebe.

"The sad fact of the matter is that demand for Saint Bernards is soaring
in the Chinese meat-packing industry, and Europe is the primary source for
these
noble animals," says Riebe.

"These faithful animals, a breed of dog which has served mankind
faithfully and has saved many human lives, are now increasingly ending up
in the puppy mills of Asia, where they are cruelly slaughtered and end up
served with stir-fried vegetables."

Countries where dog-eating is common include China, North and South Korea
and the Philippines. It is also believed to occur less frequently in
Vietnam, Cambodia, India and Thailand.

"WSPA investigators have visited dog farms, slaughterhouses and dog meat
markets in South Korea and China, and witnessed appalling levels of
cruelty on every occasion," says Riebe.

"In China, WSPA inspected farms where Saint Bernard dogs are cross-bred
with indigenous breeds to produce larger, fast-growing meat dogs," he adds.
"Many of the Saint Bernards used to set up these farms were imported from
breeders in Europe."

Dogs are typically transported from farms to markets in tiny overcrowded
cages. At markets in Korea, WSPA staff saw cages with a floor area of 1.2
x 1.2 metres containing up to 20 animals. Inside, the still-living dogs
were piled on top of each other, resembling nothing more than a heap of
entwined fur.

Most dogs are slaughtered at butcher shops set up within specialised dog
meat markets.

"They are commonly killed either by being clubbed over the head and then
having their throats cut, or by being hanged by the neck," Riebe says.

"After slaughter, dogs are generally burnt with a blow torch to remove
their fur and turn their skin a darker colour. WSPA staff saw animals at
markets in Korea being blow torched while hanging from a wire and before they
were even dead."

The Mongolian-Chinese meat dog is considered a delicacy in China and
crossing it with the Saint Bernard is seen as a great enhancement in meat
production.

"The Chinese dog farmers especially like the fact that Saint Bernards
grow up fast and bear large litters of pups," says Riebe.

"The unutterable cruelty associated with this trade is widespread, with
animals routinely transported long distances in tiny cages and
slaughtered inhumanely," he says.

"Such cruelty stands in stark contrast to the unique association that
dogs and cats share with humans as our companions and working partners. And
the noble Saint Bernard, in particular, does not deserve to be treated this
way after having time and again displayed such selfless devotion to
humankind."
