African-Americans Admit To Distributing White Supremacist Literature On UofL Campus

(LOUISVILLE, February 25th, 2004, 6 p.m.) -- Hate literature has appeared at another local college campus, this time at Spalding University. School officials there say racially inflammatory fliers were placed on approximately 15 to 20 cars on campus Tuesday night. Meanwhile, two African-American UofL students admitted Monday they placed racially charged fliers on another African-American's car, calling it "a prank." WAVE 3's Craig Hoffman reports.

A string of such "pranks" in recent weeks has many UofL students saying the the school address racially insensitivity on campus. The big question on the minds of many students is how the top brass will respond.

Over the past few months, UofL students have endured racial graffiti, threats from the KKK to speak on campus, emotionally charged fliers passed out on car, and a credit card company handing out T-shirts some people consider racially offensive.

Leaders of several campus organizations say something students fear for their safety. They say school administrators have taken some action, but it's not enough. So some organizations are planning a march on campus.

"Historically, white people -- or whatever you'd like to say -- white people don't have to be afraid of the Klan," said Bethany Wright, who is white. "I don't have to worry walking to my car at night whether or not I'm going to be snatched up or something's going to happen to me. But other students do."

As they did last week, on Wednesday students again gave a list of concerns to University president Jim Ramsey. He promised to respond within a week, and says he is already beefing up security.

Students also told Ramsey they want the school to break off all ties with 84WHAS radio because they say ongoing comments by morning talk show host Francene has proved a spark for groups like the KKK. The station denies such claims, but Ramsey says he plans to meet with 84WHAS officials. "We said that we'd look at everything. We're going to meet with the station manager and some discussions."

Ramsey has promised to get back with students in a week to address their concerns.

Ambition is the key to growth.


I will set apart some time each day to think about where I want to go, and how I intend to get there. A goal without a plan is just a wish.


"Luck" is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.


If suitable role models are not nearby, I will seek them out.


A role model is someone who, through hard work and a positive outlook, has achieved.


A role model may be a parent, relative, friend, church member, judge, doctor, attorney, businessperson, or someone I’ve read about in the newspaper or seen on the local news.


I will contact role models and seek their advice, guidance, and counsel. People remember when they were my age and are eager to help.


I will seek out recommended magazines, articles, books, biographies, videos, and motivational and how-to books, and use them for education and motivation.

Drugs are stupid. People who believe in drugs don’t believe in themselves.


I understand that jobs of the future require more preparation and training than ever, and I am determined to obtain the necessary background.


A well-rounded, competent student studies math and science.


People are not born "deficient in mathematical ability." Through hard work and dedication, the subject can be mastered.


It is essential that I learn to speak and write standard English. This is not "acting white," but acting smart.


A strong vocabulary is the key to communication, and I will read books on vocabulary enrichment.


I expect sometimes to be teased, even ridiculed. This will not stop me; it will only make me stronger and more determined.


I control my body and will not create a child until I am spiritually, psychologically, educationally, and financially capable of assuming this awesome responsibility.


Life is difficult. I expect setbacks and will learn from them. Struggle creates strength.


Every day is precious, and one without growth is squandered.

I'm Catholic and not afraid of the Klan, either. I also highly doubt that you'd have to worry about the Klan on a college campus.

And I came from a county with a bad reputation because we were 'blessed' to have a Klan wizard/dragon whatever move to our county and give us a black eye. He croaked long ago though.

I don't know. I DO know I can thank them for Michigan's old(now changed) gun laws and probably the registration law here.

One of their guys in a mob back in the 20's died when a black man (Dr. Hossian Sweet I think his name is) defended his brother and himself with a gun. This was in Detroit.

The gun laws got stricter soon after.

I had read that both black and white extremists shared a conference (later than the 60's)that had tens of thousands in attendance. I don't have the reference yet, but it's sad to see that both groups are more alike than different, which in essence IS the reason for their dislike of each other.
