Police: Chainsaw injury an accident By Norman Miller / News Staff Writer Tuesday, March 2, 2004

FRAMINGHAM -- Exactly how a man cut his nose off with a chainsaw Sunday is not known, and because police have ruled out foul play, the accident will not be investigated.

"We don't have anything to investigate -- it was a medical call," said Lt. Lou Griffith. "It was just an accident."

The fire department will not release the man's name due to federal regulations on patient privacy.

On Sunday, the unidentified man walked up alone to the back of the Fire Headquarters building at 5:50 p.m. covered with blood.

The man, who spoke limited English, told firefighters he had hit himself in the face with a chainsaw.

He was taken to the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester by a medical rescue helicopter.

His condition was unknown. Fire officials say they do not receive updates on conditions of patients, and the hospital said they could not release a condition of a patient without a name.

Must have been one of those True UberConservatives who will be sitting on his hands at the next election and otherwise helping to elect Kerry.

Anyone familiar with chain saws is aware of kick back ... that's the reason hardhats come with face shields, which are a recommended safety item when using a chain saw. Leather work gloves are also recommended.

My father-in-law bounced a chainsaw off his shin one time. Caused him to re-evaluate cutting firewood in cotton overalls.

My Stihl MS170 has a kickback brake, but even a stationary chain can do some serious face damage.
