This is an email sent this evening to the Mayor's office in the City of San Diego .....it explains it all. I urge all veterans to send their letters of protest to this action to the mayor of San Diego at
Mr. Rudy Fernandez
Veterans Liaison
Office of Mayor Dick Murphy
As you are aware by now, our permit for Balboa Park for BiketoberWest on March 17th - 21st, 2004 where we will be honoring Military Veterans has been denied by the Park & Recreations Department in Balboa Park .
At our "planning meeting" on March 5th, none of the individuals representing the City of San Diego - San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire Department, Health Department, Rick Management, ABC nor representatives from the San Diego Naval Hospital had any objections to our event. The only objections came from the Parks & Recreation Department.
I will remind you that in addition to raising funds for the Make A Wish Foundation, this event is raising funds for the Veteran's Museum in Balboa Park as well as the Veteran's Home in Chula Vista.
I am attaching for your review information that was downloaded from the website www.m20coalition.org who is apparently holding an ANTI WAR DEMONSTRATION IN BALBOA PARK ON MARCH 20, 2004. They even have a flier that can be downloaded and printed which states that all of the 5 different assembly locations will eventually converge in Balboa Park .
So let me get this straight...........no Veteran's in Balboa Park , site of the Veteran's Museum, but ANTI WAR protestors are allowed. Veteran's who fought and died for the liberties that these anti war protesters are free to enjoy are NOT allowed in Balboa Park, but the ANTI WAR protestors are.
I would ask that every Veteran, every Veteran's organization, every motorcyclist send a very loud and clear message to Mayor Murphy's office that if his administration cannot and will not support an event honoring our Veteran's in Balboa Park, yet will allow an ANTI WAR DEMONSTRATION to be held in Balboa Park then perhaps he doesn't and should not count of their vote in November. Perhaps Mayor Murphy feels that in a military town such as San Diego he doesn't need the vote of the military nor it's Veterans.
Trust me when I say that this will become an issue in his campaign as I will be as vocal as I can possibly be from this point forward about how this city, a city facing a serious financial deficit that cannot see clearly that an event of this nature will provide this city with much needed revenue. Even worse and more appalling they cannot see fit to use a PUBLIC PARK to honor this city's Veterans, only ANTI WAR PROTESTERS.

Thanks, but since there is already an event on the 20th, could it be a simple scheduling problem? Is the park big enough that both groups could easily meet there without "interfering" with each other?
If the parks department tries to make the claim that they are afraid of trouble between the groups, point out that only the anti-war groups have a history of trouble, if anyone should be denied a permit, it should be them.
If all else fails, just have a "spontaneous" gathering where people "just showed up".

Done! Here is my reply.
Sir,
It has been brought to my attention that a representative of your administration has denied a permit for an otherwise honorable and noteworthy event which brings positive attention to the plight of children with terminal diseases, and also gives veterans a place to meet and reminisce. The fact that an anti-war group has precedence over this group is just indescribable. Are you implying that the veterans who have fought for the very right they are asking for are being denied, yet the anti-war protesters are allowed to not only enjoy these freedoms, but also impinge upon the veterans rights to do the same?
Shame on you and your parks department! I believe that this is the same park that the BSA has been excluded from as well. Are you planning on turning San Diego into the "Berkeley of Southern California"? This behavior that promotes groups with negative agendas over groups that espuse positive agendas is appalling. I hope your consitituency can see you for who you really are. I will be encouraging many other folks to contact you about these hypocritical events and calling you on it.

You need to determine precisely the permitted areas. If the other side has forgotten to permit the sidewalks, that would be a good staging area for a counterprotest.
If they have, then frequent the delicatessans on the march route and just "happen" to have your signs with you.
I would also pursue a meeting with the mayor or the city council to discuss how this decision was arrived at and how come you were not notified of it. 'Pod

I propose the park be renamed Parque Pancho Villa

hmmm...Pancho Villa was not "pure" indian. He was part "white man" from Spain.
Benito Juarez, now ... he was definitely of Aztec origin!
Let's name it "Montezuma's Revenge" Perfect name since it would mean different things to different people. No?
Then the USMC could re-state the one line in the Marine Corps Hymm "From the Halls of Montezuma (Park), to the shores of Tripoli"
