(Talon News) -- A former staffer for several Democratic members of Congress was arrested at her home in Tacoma Park, Maryland Thursday on charges that she conspired to spy for Iraq.
Susan Lindauer was a journalist for Fortune, U.S. News & World Report, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer prior to working for Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) in 1993 and then Rep. Ron Wyden (D-OR) in 1994. She was the press secretary for former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun in 1996, and from March to May 2002, she worked for Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).
The indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan alleges that Lindauer accepted $10,000 for her efforts on behalf of the Iraqi Intelligence service. According to prosecutors, she made multiple visits from October 1999 through March 2002 to the Iraqi Mission to the United Nations in New York as well as traveling to Baghdad in February and March of 2002.
It is also alleged that Lindauer met with several members of the Iraqi Intelligence Service, thought to have played a role in terrorist operations, including an attempted assassination of former President George H.W. Bush.
An expanded indictment in the case against Raed Rokan Al-Anbuge, 28, and Wisam Noman Al-Anbuke, the sons of Iraq's former liaison with United Nations weapons inspectors, included the charges against Lindauer.
Prosecutors said Lindauer tried to influence U.S. foreign policy by claiming to have access and contacts with members of Saddam's regime in a letter she delivered to the home of an unnamed U.S. government official.
As Lindauer was led to a car outside the Baltimore FBI office, she told reporters, "I'm an anti-war activist and I'm innocent."
She added, "I did more to stop terrorism in this country than anybody else. I have done good things for this country. I worked to get weapons inspectors back to Iraq when everyone else said it was impossible. I'm very proud and I'll stand by my achievements."
In 1998, Lindauer gave a deposition concerning the Lockerbie bombing in which she claimed to be "subject to intense surveillance, threats, and attacks since she began meeting with Libyan officials in 1995."
She also said that acid was placed on the steering wheel of her car prior to a meeting with Libyan officials and that "my house was bugged with listening devices and cameras -- little red laser lights in the shower vent. And I survived several assassination attempts."
FBI agents searched Lindauer's home on Thursday and a neighbor was quoted as describing her as "a regular American who walks her dog in the mornings and the afternoon."
Another neighbor has a different view of Lindauer saying, "She lives in a fantasy world."

But wasn't she in the same room with Andy Card 30 years ago?

I doubt if an insanity defense is applicable to these charges.

Bear in mind, it's ABC, but this morning on GMA they named Mr. Card as the "unnamed official" in this story. I'm theorizing that if this is true, when he got the letter, he immediately got on the phone to the FBI (and possibly other officials).

Another possibility is that Iraqi intel targeted Card. After they did a lot of digging on Card's family (and I'm sure they dug into other adminstration officials' families), they came up with this ditz and used her in an attempt to get to and to compromise Card.

"I cried all day when I heard of the news of Saddam's capture" A Dean supporter.
If they will spy and cry for Saddam, what would they do for Al Qaeda?
Michael Savage is right. The enemy really is within.

All of the national broadcast nets ID'd her only as a distant cousin of Andy Card. No mention was made of her DEM connections. In our local paper this morning, the main story was headlined as "Bush Official's Cousin" charged ....One had to read a small companion story to find that she had "once" worked with Dems.
This is a fine example of bias by selective reporting. Everything in the networks' stories and those in the paper are true. But the stories leave out other critical, and true, details.

I believe that one of yesterday's threads confirmed your theory. (sorry, I don't have a link)

She shouldn't be worried. The first thing President Kerry will do will be to amnesty her. (Barfola)
