PRN on seven-second delay on race telecast [Censorship Comes To NASCAR!]

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) -- Performance Racing Network heard enough last week.

During its airing of the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, driver Johnny Sauter used profanity during a live interview. Because of that, PRN will carry Sunday's Golden Corral 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on a seven-second delay to prevent any further problems.

Sauter was fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the season for his actions.

``It's going to be our policy for the time being,'' vice president and general manager Doug Rice said Friday. ``After Johnny Sauter said something inappropriate at Las Vegas, we had major markets come to us and say, 'If we hear that again, we'll drop your programming.'''

Some of the 410 stations that carry the races already use a delay, so in some areas, the broadcast will be held for 14 seconds.

``This can't happen again,'' Rice said. ``The stations don't care that they fined Johnny Sauter. I can almost promise you everybody will play by the rules this weekend.''

On Fox, which carries its third event of the season, the telecast won't be delayed, but the network has a new policy in place to deal with any situation.

If a driver or crew member uses profanity on air, the interviewer will immediately end the exchange, apologize for what was said, and then sent the program back to the booth announcers, according to director Artie Kempner.

``We've got moms and dads watching with sons and daughters,'' Kempner said.

Speed Channel and MRN Radio, which carry the truck series event Saturday, won't use a delay, either.

The fun is being taken out of everything! 14 second delay? Why watch it!

I can't be at the tracks, so watching it LIVE is the next best thing! But a 14-second-delay! I'm just shaking my head here. A LOT of kids were brought UP in the Pits!

They can't say George Carlins 7 dirty words, but it's till OK to show the crashes. You can't say the F-bomb, but human death is still fun for the whole family.

I can't see where a 14 second delay makes any [negative] difference whatsoever.

Why the outrage?

First they take Winston out, now this. Don't know what Sauter said but it couldn't be any worse than some of the stuff they said after a race 10-15 years ago

Why do people get so upset about words and breasts, yet don't get upset when hacked off human body parts crash into car windshields like happened on this weeks CSI?

CSI was really gruesome. It's the number one show on the air!

Bump.. Thanks for the post and comments.

Your welcome! I hope it doesn't rain.

What are your thoughts about Nextel taking over? I sometimes think this is the beginning of the end for our beloved NASCAR!

A bunch of wusses! heh!

I don't see what's the problem. You probably wouldn't even know if they didn't tell you and I won't have to worry about my kid watching the race without hearing Mongo's inappropriate comments. Bleep, bleep bleep.

Not even THAT long ago!

I worked in the pits at our local race track for about 10 years. The driver's family was in the pits as well as the crews. Language was always flying around! Sure didn't seem to hurt anyone.

We are treated as a bunch of babies anymore.

Except for a very few instances there isn't a lot of 'human death' in NASCAR.

There are few things that ever retain their purity or vitality forever, so to speak. I am afraid NASCAR is one of them. Call it crass commercialism or social degeneration,, About all we can do is embrace the present and hope for better times and take what we get or leave it.

Thank God for the safety features.

Remember way back when they just jumped in their cars and took off? Just a helmut, jeans and a T shirt. Racing sure has come a long way with the safety features. As fast as they go, it's a good thing.

Shouldn't Censorship Comes To NASCAR! read PRN on seven-second delay on race telecast, or do the rules at FR not apply to you?

Looking at what the France family has done to NASCAR in the past 3-4 years to make NASCAR more 'acceptable' to those outside of the South, I wholeheartedly agree with you

I dunno. I used to be based out of Charlotte. The southern tradition does not have room for people who use profanity in a public setting.

I know that's a shock to the rest of the world, but it's not good manners.

Yes....but you don't throw a microphone in there and broadcast to millions of people.

When I'm with my buddies, I am crude and use language that would make a sailor blush, but if front of women, children, and strangers nothing worse that a "shoot" will pass my lips.

It's called manners.

Found this off a link from Sauter's page

NASCAR officials have made it clear they will no longer stand for drivers using strong language in radio communications during the races in postrace interviews on radio and television.

LOL, I'd really like to hear that conversation....That son of a biscuit eater took the air off my gosh darn spoiler...

Use the real headline!

Don't make up your own sensationalist headline.

I see we both understand Southern manners.

The point of this thread eludes me.
