Students Protest Blood Drive Screening
Associated Press ^ | March 17, 2004

Two student legislators at Western Oregon University have launched a drive to ban Red Cross blood drives on campus, claiming the donor screening process discriminates against gays.

The two students are particularly upset about a donor question that reads: "Are you a male who has had sex with another male since 1977, even once?"

The federal Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the Red Cross screening process, will not accept a donation from someone who answers 'yes' to the question, in order to help eliminate potentially HIV-tainted blood.

"By continuing to allow the Red Cross on our campus, the university is telling all the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students that we don't care about you," said student senator Shauna Bates, who is co-sponsoring the legislation.

If the resolution passes with a two-thirds majority vote of the senate's 14 members, no student-funded organization would be allowed to sponsor a blood drive. Current blood drives on campus, though, get their funding from the university's health services department.

A meeting on the topic Monday drew students and various health officials from the university and Red Cross opposing the move.

Student Molly Underwood said that matters of public health supersede those of discrimination.

"Just because somebody thinks something is unfair doesn't mean you should ban it," Underwood said. "Lives could be at stake."

Get a friggin' grip. It says, "we care about you enough not to expose you to potentially tainted blood." If the Red Cross didn't care, they wouldn't supply blood for operations involving these folks.

we don't care about you
So.. by letting them put potentially tainted blood in the very system that they may use to save their lives we display this lack of concern?

People like are so destructive. Caligula is said to have wished that all Humanity had but one neck -- so that he might more easily cut it off. These idiots seem similar. They want to destroy. They want to spread disease. They want to convince happy people that the world is a miserable, hatefilled, prejudiced place.

Their family should be ashamed of them.

That's right let's just destroy the blood supply in the name of "gay rights". Why don't we throw all modern medical technology out the window while we are at it? Let's get rid of antibiotics which don't help against AIDS. Fleming must have been a homophobic bigot.

Once we've destroyed civilization, we can keep warm by burning Bibles.

They can still give blood.

They just place the anonymous "DO NOT USE" sticker on their form.

The Red Cross did that so gays could give blood like everybody else, but not put anyone at risk.

Perhaps the Red Cross could offer GLT (Gay Lesbian Transgendered) blood as a special item--like autologous (self-donated) blood, but, uh, different. It would be "special", and make these people feel special, too. My only suggestion would be that if you donated GLT blood, you'd have to take it when you needed a tranfusion.

There wouldn't be a lot of takers (or donors).

Then may we assume these angry students support 'don't ask, don't tell'?

You forgot the, "Lunatics running the Asylum" alert.

........Like it needs one.

WHY don't I ever get the pleasure of running into these type of morons so I could take them apart with a single sentence:

"Why is your fear of discrimination worth the lives of my 2 Sons?"

Brilliant piece of logic there, Shauna. The Red Cross doesn't want to taint the blood supply, you mental midget. You're still angry because they made you ride the short bus in K-12, aren't you?

To avoid discrimination, I propose every non-HIV positive person be injected with the virus, rending us all HIV-positive. It's only fair.

The Queer Mafia is truly evil. Poisoning the blood supply and preventing donations is satanic.

Then they LIE and place the wrong sticker intentionally and when the blood IS tested, what is the margin of error in the accuracy of the screening. Some innocent person gets a unit of tainted blood... I sure hope I have time to donate for myself if I ever need to receive a transfusion!
KEEP ASKING THE QUESTIONS!

These people are stunned...Why would you even consider giving blood if you posed a possible risk...

I don't give blood because in the 1980's I was in the UK, and I ate beef over in the UK...there is a slight possibilty that I couls have BSE (mad cow) although it is unlikely, I don't want to take that chance and doom someone else if I do have some form of BSE lurking...

Before we do that, we have to ask for the opinion of John Fickle Kerry and the UN.

They are SO pissed because they're gay and most of the rest of aren't so anytime they can put us at risk just as they are for engaging in risky behavior they go for it. Amazing.
