Any Guesses On Who Will Be John Kerry's Running Mate?
March 19, 2004 | Comte De Maistre

I think Kerry will surprise everyone, with his choice of running mate. I am thinking of 4 possibilities.

One possibility may be Max Cleland. Cleland's advantages are that he served in Vietnam, and he is from the South. It will be portrayed as an all-hero ticket, with geographical balance. There is also the victimology issue. Democrats have had great success in portraying Cleland as having been smeared by the mean, ugly, nasty, cruel, hateful and sadistic Republicans, in his 2002 re-election effort. Nominating Cleland as his running mate, will help Kerry remind voters, especially soccer mums, how mean, ugly, nasty, cruel, hateful and sadistic the Republicans are.

The other possibility may be Sen. Robert Byrd, who would help Kerry carry West Virginia, which Democrats lost last time to President Bush.

Pat "Osama Mama" Murray of Washington State is another possibility, which may be done in the name of women's rights, and enable Kerry to match Mondale's gender equality move of 1984.

Kerry might also need an experienced and well-rounded candidate like Jerold Nadler of New York, who is, well....round.

I also would not rule out Jesse "the body" Ventura, who can help Kerry appeal to independent voters, nuts, fruitcakes, Liberace fans, and WWF fans (they vote, you know).

Edwards. Hillary knows he's gonna lose, so she will decline his offer. Edwards has less negatives.

Didn't Cleland pick up a grenade he saw on the ground, and blew off three of his own limbs with it? Not a good choice for VP I think.

Ventura - he's already used his 15 minutes.
Murray - might as well pick Hillary.
Byrd - you're joking?
Nadler - hey, I saw him on the House floor this a.m. and he was, how you say, looking svelt.
Cleland - I was suggesting that name to a friend of mine on the phone this am.

The talk is - Gephardt.

My guesses are: Graham of Florida; Ford of Texas (I think that's his name); Clinton of New York; or Richardson of New Mexico

Of those, Graham and Ford offer the greatest benefits. Clinton would offer the most party enthusiasm, but she would be a liability overall. Richardson would be a dud. I hope Richardson is his pick.

Bill Richardson. Hispanic voters will be hard for Kerry to pick up on his own, Richardson is a well liked Governor without a lot of baggage and is a coherent thinker. Putting pressure on Bush in the Southwest might mitigate the Rust Belt pressure Bush is bound to put on Kerry.

Or Wesley Clark. That would probably be a pretty smart pick.

Harold Ford would be a good pick, but he isn't eligible because of the Consitiution age requirement. (depends on the interpretation of the VP clause)
