The US media almost entirely ignores news regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran. As Tony Snow of the Fox News Network has put it, “this is probably the most under-reported news story of the year.” But most American’s are unaware that the Islamic Republic of Iran is NOT supported by the masses of Iranians today. Modern Iranians are among the most pro-American in the Middle East.

There is a popular revolt against the Iranian regime brewing in Iran today. I began these daily threads June 10th 2003. On that date Iranians once again began taking to the streets to express their desire for a regime change. Today in Iran, most want to replace the regime with a secular democracy.

The regime is working hard to keep the news about the protest movement in Iran from being reported. Unfortunately, the regime has successfully prohibited western news reporters from covering the demonstrations. The voices of discontent within Iran are sometime murdered, more often imprisoned. Still the people continue to take to the streets to demonstrate against the regime.

In support of this revolt, Iranians in America have been broadcasting news stories by satellite into Iran. This 21st century news link has greatly encouraged these protests. The regime has been attempting to jam the signals, and locate the satellite dishes. Still the people violate the law and listen to these broadcasts. Iranians also use the Internet and the regime attempts to block their access to news against the regime. In spite of this, many Iranians inside of Iran read these posts daily to keep informed of the events in their own country.

This daily thread contains nearly all of the English news reports on Iran. It is thorough. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a nation. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary. The news stories and commentary will from time to time include material from the regime itself. But if you read the post you will discover for yourself, the real story of what is occurring in Iran and its effects on the war on terror.

I am not of Iranian heritage. I am an American committed to supporting the efforts of those in Iran seeking to replace their government with a secular democracy. I am in contact with leaders of the Iranian community here in the United States and in Iran itself.

If you read the daily posts you will gain a better understanding of the US war on terrorism, the Middle East and why we need to support a change of regime in Iran. Feel free to ask your questions and post news stories you discover in the weeks to come.

If all goes well Iran will be free soon and I am convinced become a major ally in the war on terrorism. The regime will fall. Iran will be free. It is just a matter of time.

ElBaradei looks ahead to Iran

THE UN nuclear agency has almost finished its work in Libya, but has plenty to do in Iran, its director Mohammed ElBaradei told reporters today.

Speaking after talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, ElBaradei, who is Egyptian, said he would visit Iran in early April to try to persuade its nuclear authorities of the need for "complete and transparent cooperation with the agency to make sure that the Iranian program is completely dedicated for peaceful purposes".

Earlier this month, Iran barred inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency for two weeks after the UN watchdog criticised the country for failing to disclose certain nuclear activities. Iran later agreed to allow inspections to resume March 27.

The United States strongly suspects Iran has a secret program to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charge.

IAEA inspectors have been supervising the dismantling of Libya's nuclear program since the country declared in December that it would stop trying to build weapons of mass destruction.

"We're almost done concerning inspecting the Libyan program," ElBaradei said today. "Concerning Iran, we still have to do a lot of work because the Iranian program is more complicated and comprehensive."

"There was a difficult period at the beginning of our work in Iran" but things are on track now, ElBaradei said.

ElBaradei hopes to be able to present an assessment of Iran's nuclear activities to the IAEA board of governors in June.

ElBaradei said he briefed Mubarak on his meeting last week with US President George W Bush about the need for vigilance against the nuclear "black market". It was recently disclosed that a Pakistani nuclear scientist had illegally sold nuclear techniques and material to other countries.

Asked why the IAEA was concerned with Iran and Libya but not Israel, ElBaradei said: "The agency doesn't have the legal authorisation to inspect in Israel".

Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, but declines to confirm or deny such reports.

Iran mullahs: Palestine, most important issue of world of Islam

IRNA -- Head of Majlis Speaker`s office in Tehran Ahmad Hosseini said on Tuesday that Palestine is the most important issue of the world of Islam. In a meeting with Hamas representative in Tehran Abdulmoatta in Tehran on Tuesday, Hosseini underlined the valuable role of the late spiritual leader of Hamas Sheikh Ahmed Yasin in formation of Hamas and Intifadha, saying his martyrdom would be source of blessing for Palestinians` Intifadha.

Hosseini attended the meeting on sidelines of a ceremony to lay wreath at Hamas`s Tehran office in commemoration of late Yasin, who was assassinated by Israel in Gaza early Monday morning. He said Iranian government and people pay special attention to Palestinian issues and consider Palestinian Intifadha as a valuable move taken by Palestinians to regain their legitimate rights. He added that Zionist occupiers` "criminal" move in the occupied Palestine is clear stance of terrorism. "The US that claims to have been fighting terrorism is the main propagator of terrorism in the region and the world for supporting the criminal move," said Hosseini. He voiced sympathy with Palestinians on the incident on behalf of Iranian government and people. Abdulmoatta said for his part that the million-strong presence of people in Yasin`s funeral was sign of public support for Intifadha. He said that the usurper Israel and its US ally were falsely thinking that they would be able to suppress Intifadha by assassination of Yasin.

Iran`s government on Tuesday condemned assassination by Israel of Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmad Yasin, saying that Palestinians` continued resistance is the only way to face Israel`s brutal policies. Issuing a six-point statement, Iranian government also stressed further unity among Palestinians against Israeli threats. The statement said that undoubtedly, Israel`s main objective in adopting such measures is to bring the heroic resistance of the Palestinian people into its knees but experience has shown that martyrdom of any Palestinian inhales a new life to other Palestinians, their resistance and Intifadha.

The statement said the "terrorist" incident indicates the US` direct role in Israeli atrocities. It highly criticized the international organizations and communities, especially certain Arab and Muslim states, for their indifference towards the ongoing events in Palestine as well as Israel`s crimes against the defenseless Palestinian people. It said that international organizations` silence had further encouraged Israel to go on with its policy of assassination and massacre.

It added that Israel has been insisting on its policy of assassination, suppression and insecurity, proving that it considers its life depended on escalation of tension in the occupied lands and the region. It warned that the US` support for Israel and the global community`s silence against Israeli atrocities would undoubtedly result in continued instability, tension and atrocities of Israel in the region. Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, President Mohammad Khatami, Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Majlis Speaker Mehdi Karroubi, Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, Vice-President Mohammad-Ali Abtahi, government spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi, Leadership envoy in Syria Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini, Friday prayers leaders in Iran, Majlis National Security Commission, Islamic Revolution Martyrs Foundation and Basij have thus far condemned the assassination.

Israel on Monday assassinated Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yasin. An Israeli warplane fired several missiles at Yasin`s car shortly after he performed the dawn prayer at a central Gaza mosque. Sheikh Yasin and two of his aides were killed instantly. Following his death, thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip took to the streets, shouting "God is Great." Hamas has vowed to avenge Yasin`s death and the movement`s leaders said the retaliation would be thunderous. The Zionist regime claimed responsibility for the murder.

U.S. Presents U.N. Resolution on Weapons

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United States presented a U.N. resolution Wednesday aimed at cracking down on the international black market in weapons of mass destruction, a shadowy network partly unearthed by a string of nuclear scandals.

The proposal is aimed at extending controls to ``non-state actors'' - crooked scientists, black marketeers and terrorists - who might slip through the cracks of current weapons treaties that focus on governments.

``It's a serious gap in the international regime and it's one that needs to be dealt with on an urgent basis,'' U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said after presenting the draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council. It was unclear when a vote might take place.

The measure comes as the International Atomic Energy Agency investigates a vast underworld market in nuclear equipment and know-how.

In the first major breakthrough, Pakistan admitted in February that one of its leading scientists, Abdul Qadeer Khan, passed technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea. Experts have since turned up black market links to Dubai, Malaysia, South Korea, Switzerland, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and beyond.

Investigators looking into Libya's defunct nuclear program have found blueprints of a nuclear warhead from Pakistan and evidence that a Japanse company sold the Libyans a plant for converting uranium.

The draft Security Council resolution required months of negotiations between the five permanent members of the council - the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain. China in particular had had reservations about possible seizure of weapons shipments.

United States is now trying to win support from the 10 other members of the Security Council.

``What we have to do is stop the ultimate nightmare - the bringing together of weapons of mass destruction and the terrorists,'' said British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry, a co-sponsor of the measure.

Among other actions, the draft resolution would require all United Nations members to:

- Pass laws prohibiting any person or group from manufacturing, acquiring, possessing, developing, transporting or transferring any nuclear chemical or biological weapon.

- Set up controls over materials that could be used in nuclear bombs or other weapons of mass destruction.

- Inform industry and the public about the risks and penalties of trafficking in weapons of mass destruction. That has become an important issue, since some manufacturers implicated in nuclear-smuggling claim they did not realize their parts were being used for nuclear programs.

- Report their progress to a U.N. committee within 90 days.

The measure does not spell out punishments for offenders, or for countries that fail to meet the U.N. requirements.

The resolution says it targets individuals or groups ``not acting under the lawful authority of any state.'' That is a touchy subject in the IAEA probe: Pakistan denies it knew Khan was distributing nuclear technology to other countries, but investigators reportedly have their doubts.

The U.S. and British ambassadors stressed that the resolution is meant to quickly patch up holes in international law, not replace hard-fought treaties against weapons of mass destruction.

``It is a responsible reaction by the Security Council to a real threat to international peace and security,'' Jones Parry said.

Islam never accepts globalization of West

Kuwait City, March 24 (IranMania) -- According to Iran's State News Agency(IRNA) the Islamic World does not accept false globalization policies of the West, Head of the International Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thoughts Ayatollah Mohammad-Ali Taskhiri said here Tuesday.

Taskhiri arrived here on Saturday night to attend a conference on 'Islam and Regional and International Cooperation'.

"The Islamic World never accepts negative points that have been included in the idea of globalization of the West," he said.

"It will never accept a thought which promotes capitalism and the US full domination over political, cultural, economic and social ties between nations."

"Muslims demand a world which justice, friendship and cooperation would regulate relations between nations," he added.

Taskhiri urged all Islamic nations to maintain unity against the West domination. "We can resist against the cultural invasion of the West through awareness and reliance on religious teachings," he stressed.

"The Islamic Ummah defends justice for all peoples and has always supported the oppressed people," the official said.

"Islam seeks promotion of the culture of cooperation among peoples and stresses social justice," he added.

The Conference on Islam and the Regional and International Cooperation kicked off in Kuwait on March 22 and was attended by more than 70 senior religious and scientific officials from Islamic states.

Ways of promoting cooperation among Islamic and other nations to build a better world for living and forge consensus on the issue were discussed at the meeting.

The participants also reviewed ways for stronger ties among Islamic and other nations and for proximity of political stances of the Islamic World leaders.

Japan Banks Eye USD 1.2 Billion Loan for NIOC

TOKYO -- Japan Bank for International Cooperation is teaming up with four major Japanese banks, including Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, þto extend a USD 1.2 billion syndicated loan to the state-run National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC), a major Japanese business daily reported on Thursday.

In an unusual move, the agreement for the nine-years term loan, includes a stipulation that Iran must make an effort to increase its crude oil supplies to Japan if an emergency erupts in the Middle East, the Nikkei Shimbun said.þ

The syndicated loan will be extended through a special-purpose company to a NIOC subsidiary, according to the report.

The loan payments will be made via the annual proceeds that NIOC will þgenerate from crude oil sales to Japanese trading companies.

The Japanese trading firms will pass on the payments directly to the banks, thus by-passing the Iranian side completely, it said.

Japan's crude oil imports from Iran totaled 576,000 bpd in fiscal 2002, making that nation the third-largest oil supplier to Japan following the UAEþand Saudi Arabia. þ

Observers believe that the latest deal will help ensure Japan's access to energy sources, it said.

Profile: Hamas Leader Khaled Meshaal

Khaled Meshaal, the militant Palestinian leader who has been named as overall leader of Hamas, survived an attempt of his life by Israeli agents in 1997.

While Israel's government has now vowed to kill all Hamas leaders, Mr Meshaal, who has long held the position of Hamas political chief, will be difficult to target because he is believed to be based in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Mr Meshaal was named the organisation's most senior figure after the assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on Tuesday. Abdel-Aziz Rantissi was became the head of the movement in Gaza. To many Hamas members, he will remain the most influential Hamas leader.

In the wake of Sheik Yassin's assassination, Mr Meshaal was quoted as saying Hamas now had the right to "hunt down the big Zionist heads" including that of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in revenge for the killing.

He told the pan-Arab al-Hayat daily in Damascus that Hamas would confine its struggle to Israeli and Palestinian territory.

Exiled leadership

Analysts say the strengthening of Mr Meshaal's position represents a significant shift towards the so-called external leadership of Hamas. The organisation has long been run between the local and exiled leadership, with Sheikh Yassin the overall authority.

Mr Meshaal came to the forefront of Hamas after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. He belonged to what is known as the Kuwait contingent, Palestinians who lived and worked there. Mr Meshaal worked for a while as a physics teacher.

After Iraq's invasion he, like many Palestinians, moved to Jordan, where Palestinians make up some 60% of the population.

He took over the operation of a Hamas bureau in the capital Amman, where he was in charge of international fundraising for Hamas. He was also particularly energetic in expanding the group's foreign relations with country's such as Iran and Syria.

Money was channelled from donors around the world to the West Bank and Gaza Strip for social welfare programmes run by Hamas. The Israelis say some of it was used for suicide bombings and other attacks on Israelis.

Israeli poison attempt

In 1997, Israeli agents tried to kill Mr Meshaal. The operation was authorised by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which described Mr Meshaal was the "pre-eminent figure in Hamas and responsible for the murder of innocent Israeli civilians".

Israeli Mossad agents disguised as Canadian tourists injected poison into his ear but he was rushed to hospital before it took hold. His life was literally saved by Jordanian King Hussein, who demanded the Israeli Government hand over the antidote. The agents were arrested and exchanged for an Israeli apology and the release of Sheikh Yassin and 19 other prisoners.

Mr Meshaal denied being involved in planning suicide attacks.

Mr Meshaal has denied being behind the planning of suicide bombings.

In the late 1990s, King Hussein's son and successor King Abdullah closed down the Hamas office. Mr Meshaal, who was briefly imprisoned, went to Qatar and then Syria, where he took over the Damascus operation of Hamas.

In February 2003, he represented Hamas at talks presided over by Egyptian officials who had summoned leading Palestinian groups to Egypt in an attempt to secure a ceasefire. Mr Meshaal told delegates at the time that his group refused to suspend attacks on Israelis.

Like Mr Rantissi, Mr Meshaal is opposed to any accommodation with Israel.

Dr Khaled Hroub, author of Hamas: Political Thought and Practice, told BBC News Online says that it is significant that Hamas has strengthened the exiled leadership.

"For the first time Hamas is in a situation where it has to choose its overall leadership. Hamas is exploiting the situation by giving itself more room for manoeuvre by choosing someone from outside the occupied territories. It gives them easier access to outside parties and governments."

But, Mr Hroub warned that Mr Meshaal's appointment could lead to tension within Hamas.

Dr Magnus Ranstorp, deputy director of the Centre for Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at St Andrew's University in Scotland, says it is likely that Hamas has decided to shift its power for security reasons.

"For security reasons, it appears that Hamas is shifting more of its power back to the exiles," he told BBC News Online. "During the 1990s, the ignition key for terror was on the outside but, after the outbreak of the current Palestinian intifada, those decisions moved back to the Palestinian territories.

"Now, because Hamas leaders are being targeted by the Israelis, the military component will probably become more important for the external leadership. You can't really separate the Hamas political from its military wing."

Mr Ranstorp said Israel may now ask the US to put pressure on Syria to crack down on Mr Meshaal's operations in Damascus.

Iranian Film Mocking Clerics Hits Censor Trouble

TEHRAN -- A few weeks ago, enigmatic posters of a green reptile sprang up all over Tehran, urging Iranians to cancel their traditional spring holidays and "Wait for the Lizard."

But Iranians are still waiting. "The Lizard," an award-winning movie comedy, has fallen foul of censors for poking fun at the conservative clerics who run the Islamic Republic.

The film follows the fortunes of Reza Marmoulak (Reza the lizard), a thief who disguises himself in clerical robes and turban to escape from prison. Ironically, the escaped convict proves a big hit as a preacher and brings worshippers flocking back to mosques.

"The Lizard" had audiences laughing at the privileges of the turbaned class as it won the best film award at Tehran's Fajr International Film Festival in February.

"I laughed so hard I could have split my sides," said Marziyeh, 20. "I couldn't believe my eyes."

But apart from being funny, the film carries an underlying message that God is accessible to all. Conservative movie critics deemed the film insulting.

It had been expected to hit public cinemas on March 18, but the reels are still with the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

A spokesman, who declined to be named, denied Thursday that it had been banned, saying: "The screening has only been postponed."

NO REASON GIVEN

If anything, Iranian film producers were surprised to hear that "The Lizard" had got the green light first time around.

Strong government control dates back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when the state took over the film industry to fight Western cultural influence and promote Islamic values.

The climate eased after reformist president Mohammad Khatami took office in 1997, but strict Islamic rules on content remained in place, enforcing conservative dress for female actors and preventing any allusion to sexuality.

"The fact that the production got permission was more surprising than the ban because there is usually little tolerance for films that mock the clerics," said one producer, who wished to remain unnamed.

Manouchehr Mohammadi, producer of "The Lizard," told the Mehr News Agency Web Site (www.mehrnews.com) he had not been given any reason for the film's withdrawal, just a few hours before Tehran box offices were due to open.

He said he had simply been told by Culture Ministry officials that some negotiations were needed.

Despite censorship at home, Iranian films have won about 300 prizes in the last 10 years at international festivals that have feted directors such as Abbas Kiarostami and Mohsen Makhmalbaf.

But often these films have been smuggled out of Iran -- or are simply never shown at home.

Meanwhile, cinema attendance is in steady decline as moviegoers shun grubby cinemas with their staple diet of war films and highly moral romances in favor of widely available pirated videos and the latest Hollywood films on DVD.

"I rarely go to the cinema because the films are as boring as ever," said Amirali, 28, a dentist.

Iran: Torture Victim Denied Medical Treatment in Prison

Amnesty International is extremely concerned for the health of an Iranian man who has been imprisoned, tortured and denied medical treatment after he talked to a Channel 4 'Dispatches' television team last year. Earlier this week the organisation issued an Urgent Action appeal on his behalf.

Arzhang Davoodi, 46, was arrested between August and October 2003 and severely beaten after criticising the Iranian authorities in a secretly filmed television documentary Iran Undercover – Inside the Hidden Revolution, broadcast on Channel 4 television on 2 December 2003. He spoke to a 'Dispatches' journalist about political prisoners and the death of Canadian-Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi who died in custody after she was arrested for taking photos outside Evin prison in 2003. Reports on the Iranian internet news site Peyk-e Iran state that Arzhang was tortured and held in solitary confinement for 100 days during his detention at Band 325, a prison facility run by the Revolutionary Guard. Arzhang suffered a broken shoulder blade, bleeding in his left eye, deafness, a broken jaw and broken teeth. A reported medical assessment required treatment of his eyes, ears and teeth, as well as physiotherapy for his shoulder, yet the authorities have allegedly provided no such treatment. During the winter, he was kept in a room with air conditioning turned on all night. According to his family, officials at the prison will not grant him permission to obtain medical treatment. Since 17 March Arzhang Davoodi has been detained at Salon 8 of Evin prison, a section of the prison that has no medical facilities. Amnesty International believes that this move is deliberately designed to prevent Arzhang from accessing medical treatment. Amnesty International UK Media Director Lesley Warner said: "Arzhang Davoodi appears to have been brutally beaten simply for speaking to a foreign reporter. "Amnesty International members around the world are urgently asking the Iranian authorities to end any ill-treatment and give Arzhang immediate and unconditional access to medical treatment. "We are also asking why Arzhang Davoodi is still in prison despite the payment of bail." Arzhang Davoodi's family has paid bail of 50 million Tomans (US,380) as requested by the Iranian authorities for his release. However the authorities are now refusing to release him claiming that his file is "not complete." Although he has been allowed to make telephone calls to his lawyer, his lawyer is not entitled to access his client's file until formal charges have been brought. It is presently unclear whether these charges have been brought.

Bush and Ebadi on Rights

Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi spoke at a conference on Islam and universal values in Jakarta, Indonesia. Ms. Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, said that some Muslim leaders are distorting Islam to justify dictatorship. “Many governments have made a shield of Islam, to hide behind it,” she said. “They justify their tyranny with interpretations of the religion.”

Ms. Ebadi, a lawyer in Iran, made a similar point in an earlier speech on women’s rights in Geneva, Switzerland. She said that democracy is the best way for women to achieve justice and equality in society. But “some Islamic governments,” said Ms. Ebadi, say that “democracy is not compatible with Islam. . . . They are promoting their own beliefs and their own undemocratic practices, imposing those beliefs on the people.”

President George W. Bush says he is impressed by Shirin Ebadi and her struggle for human rights:

“No wonder she won the Nobel Prize. She’s a proud Iranian. She is a devout Muslim. She believes that democracy is consistent with Islamic teachings, and we share in this belief. That’s what we believe in America. A religion that demands individual moral accountability and encourages the encounter of the individual with God is fully compatible with the rights and responsibilities of self-government.”

“As a matter of national conviction,” says Mr. Bush, Americans “believe that every person in every culture is meant by God to live in freedom”:

“The policy of the American government is to stand for the non-negotiable demands of human dignity -- the rule of law, the limits on the power of the state, free speech, freedom of worship, equal justice, respect for women, religious and ethnic tolerance, and protections for private property.”

“That is what we believe,” says President Bush, “and we’re not going to change.”
