I think there is also another reason for the Hoover Dam bypass bridge: it will make it possible to turn the entire route from Las Vegas, NV to Kingman, AZ into a full freeway--and possibly the route could get a full three-digit Interstate Highway designation (I-110 from Kingman, AZ to the bridge, and I-115 from the bridge to downtown Las Vegas). Works for me!

If the perps have one small enough to lob at the dam,
there are a vast number of targets that would likely be
of more interest.

If the device is too big, and has to be detonated on the
bypass bridge, chances are it still won't breach the dam.
Plus, there are still other places they'd likely use it.

The bypass solves a long-standing traffic problem and
probably reduces any terror risk to negligible levels -
there are simply more attractive targets for any
suitable device, conventional or otherwise.

Wacko environmentalists are a bigger threat to that dam
than wacko muslims.

Far as I know, truck traffic is already banned over the dam. they have to go down to Laughlin or Needles to cross. The make all passenger traffic and tour busses go through a checkpoint before crossing. Our tour bus had a cop board and look through it before we could go on (fall of 2002).

About dam time. That is without a doubt the scariest piece of road I have EVER been on.

There is very little rainfall there, so windshield wipers aren't much of a priority. Until one night my daughter and I had to go that way. It began to POUR rain. There was no place to pull over, unless you wanted to go sideways, down the clift. Consequently, she had to lean out of the window to see. Even then, there was almost zero visibility. Going about 15 MPH, she had to follow the white stripe in the road. That was the scariest of the scary trips I made via that dam.

There seem to be some people in the world who haven't a clue as to how to build a Hoover Dam . . . but are hell bent on being destructive nonetheless.

During the cold war the Engrains played the Soviets off against the Americans thus getting the USSR to build the Aswan dam for them. It's often been noted that in a fierce war Israel could take out Egypt with one nuclear strike on the Aswan high dam

Images of Egypt
... There are 2 dams at Aswan; the "Aswan Dam" was built by the British at the end of
the 19th century and the "Aswan High Dam" built by the Russians in the 1960s. ...

My greatest concern is that the new interstate highway bridge will become one of the most popular sports to stop for a photo, a very dangerous proposition. They'd better have good enforcement, excellent signage, and optimum turn-out view points at either end.

Probably a good idea actually.

It's an excellent idea.
I've driven across the dam several times.
It's a tourist spot that I highly recommend EVERYBODY should visit.
But the last mile or so of roadway leading to it on either side is a steep, narrow, hairpin-winding pain in the butt.
It'll be FAR better to allocate that one for the tourists, and let the thru-traffic go around on a modern highway bypass.
