Which is exactly why my post wasn't addressed to you...

I assume many moved from "self-employed" onto payrolls.

Count me as one. I quit my job in Oct and started my own company thanks to the W economy and tax cuts! It has been a great move and everyone in the business is hoping for W to get re-elected to keep the economy booming. Business owners are universal that Yaaaaawn Tax & Kerry would kill this growth.

Pray for W and The Truth

When you said 'you' I thought you meant the plural not the singular.

My mistake, I thought you were playing the victim in need of more taxes-- I apologize for the insult, and I owe you a sack of coffee and bananas.

Alot to read out of this report, mostly good, but some of the negative trends remain. As others have pointed out, you have to take the 70,000 CA grocery workers out of the mix. Still its a good number.

Alot of people talking about the Fed now moving rates up, but if you look at the report, the unit labor cost numbers are still going nowhere. That just confirms what we've been saying - private sector wages are going nowhere, likely declining. You can see that even in anecdotal evidence from today's financial news - Sun Microsystems fires 3300 people, all of them making over $75K (Sun pays/paid well). That would be OK if IBM, Dell and HP were hiring, but they are using offshore labor. Most of those Sun employees will likely be taking a pay cut, wherever they end up.

That said, the diffusion index in the report was fairly good - hiring across a wide range of sectors. Even manufacturing stopped the 43 month decline of job losses (it was flat), and if you believe the recent ISM numbers, there may well have been some growth in manufacturing jobs.

Bush needs to get a string of these kinds of reports for a few months in a row. Not 300K, that's too high, but anything around 150K+ per month. We can argue about the quality of the jobs later, right now, for political considerations, Bush just needs numbers.

And let's see all these freepers put their money where their mouths (or keyboards) are to help keep this going - GO OUT AND SPEND MONEY. And don't buy chinese made junk. Go take a look at your washer/dryer and other appliances, sure they may work, but if its 15 years old, consider replacing it with a made in the USA model. Buy some new Craftsman tools. Also consider how much of our economy is built on services - take the family out to eat once or twice more per month. Take a vacation. Subscribe to cable modem service. Basically, spend money in and on US products, that's the only way to help our economy. You can worry about saving money again after Kerry is defeated.

I'm hearing that a settled grocery strike in CA accounts for about 72,000 of these jobs
Striking workers count as unemployed??? You've got to be kidding me!

This isn't actually true. Most striking workers are replaced by temporary workers. When the strike ended, most of the temporary workers were laid off. The net gain/loss of jobs is nearly a push.

I'm not surprised by this. I expect it to continue.

I know. I have been waiting for the floodgates to be opened. And, you are right, it will continue for the next 12-18 months, IMHO.

Release the hounds!

The truth of the matter is that whatever other factors may impact those numbers, they are constant with the way that the unemployment rate has always been calculated.

If in fact there are people who are not being counted, then that number of people, however many there may be, has always existed.

Really surprising how a good monthly number has everyone blowing the horn for this statistic. When the numbers were bad - the statitic was innacurate, now it's the holy grail. When will we see what the household survey did - the series that has been used recently to discredit the manufactures index. Switching horses when the lead changes in the home stretch is not confined to any one political party or candidate. This is the index that has been used the longest & has a better history - let's not be making changes on political grounds.

It's absolutely ripping your heart out, isn't it? Seeing all your dreams go up in smoke? LOL

"If they are able to work, they should still count."

So, if I hit the Florida Lotto tomorrow, and decide to never work again because I don't need the income any longer, you want me counted as unemployed?

And you're arguing that my inclusion would paint a more accurate picture of how many people are unemployed in the US?
