MADISON, N.J. (AP) - Police sealed off the Fairleigh Dickinson University campus early Sunday, but authorities did not disclose what prompted the action.

At least six people were taken to hospitals.

Madison police referred queries about what might have occurred to nearby Florham Park police, who would not comment. The Morris County Prosecutor's Office said it would release a statement later in the day.

Four people were taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman told AP Network News. One was released, she said, but did not give any other information.

Two Fairleigh Dickinson students were treated and then released from Saint Barnabas Medical Center, said spokeswoman Robin Lally. She did not disclose the nature of their treatment.

Five young women trying to get back to their dormitories or sorority houses stood by one of the gates about 5 a.m. They said they heard there had been a shooting. They were driven onto campus by a university public safety officer.

Fairleigh Dickinson is New Jersey's largest private university, according to the school's Web site, with campuses in Madison and Teaneck. About 3,500 undergraduates and graduate students attend the Madison campus, called the College at Florham.

Fox News was a little late with their news alert on this. I saw it posted on NJ.com at 6:30 this morning. I heard there were several people taken to the hospital.

Why all the mystery? Why doesn't anyone want to answer questions? hmmmmm? I don't see anything on the Ledger web site or on the FDU web site.

Wouldn't the U keep it under wraps until they'd prepared just the right press release if the shooting (if that's what it was) were done by a faculty member?

Why doesn't anyone want to answer questions?

They have to first figure out the spin, then, if a gun was involved they want to make sure they get to trot out their anti gun spokesperson.

You're right, FrogMom. My point was that by not saying anything, they could cause even more alarm. How would one know what kind of crime were committed, be it a shooting, something terror-related or something else and they don't say whether the perp still is on campus? That is where I was going. Imagine being a parent of a student there.

This is a remarkable story. I thought about posting it myself about six hours ago. Not much was known then, and not much is know now. The question is: why is there a news blackout here?

I have my guess, and maybe others can guess too.

My guess is that this has to do with a student or group of students who would not normally have been admitted to Fairleigh but "brilliant" minds thought they needed some sort racial balance there. And they got it.

Either some violent conflict involving a "diversity" or one involving a Muslim, is my guess

FDU and Drew are two stains on what is otherwise a marvelous town of Madison. I predict that within ten years one or both of these schools will be closed.

UPDATE:

One shot in fight at Farlie

By JEFF LINKOUS
The Associated Press
4/4/2004, 12:08 p.m. ET

MADISON, N.J. (AP) — One student was shot and several other people injured in a Saturday night fight at Fairleigh Dickinson University, officials said Sunday.

At least one of the injured people was stabbed, a law enforcement official said.

The fight involved visitors to the school and students from its Madison and Teaneck campuses, according to a statement issued by school President J. Michael Adams.

The melee started during a dance held by the Association of Black Collegians and "resulted in an escalating confrontation," said Adams' statement, which was posted on the university's Web site Sunday.

The statement said wounds to the gunshot victim, a student at the Teaneck campus, were not believed to be life threatening. Three or four other people were injured, but the statement said the school did not yet know whether they were students.

Capt. Paul Kalleberg of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said stab wounds were suffered as well, but he did not elaborate.

At least six people were taken to area hospitals, spokespeople said.

Police sealed off the campus Saturday night and interviewed students arriving and departing Sunday. No visitors were allowed on campus.

Brian Decicco, 19, said he was forced to stay overnight in a friend's room after stopping there to visit friends. Decicco is not a Fairleigh Dickinson student.

"I was sitting in the room and heard firecrackers and a lot of commotion outside," he said. "It was a gunshot, I learned later."

Police would not say whether arrests had been made. Prosecutors and Florham Park Police scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m.

Four people were taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman told AP Network News. One of the people was released, she said, but did not give any other information.

Saint Barnabas Medical Center spokeswoman Robin Lally said two Fairleigh Dickinson students were treated and then released from the hospital in Livingston. She did not disclose the students' names or the nature of their treatment.

Five young women trying to get back to their dormitories or sorority houses stood by one of the gates about 5 a.m. They said they heard there had been a shooting. They were driven onto campus by a university public safety officer.

Fairleigh Dickinson is an independent university with campuses in Madison and Teaneck. About 3,500 undergraduates and graduate students attend the Madison campus, called the College at Florham.
