Sunday, April 25, 2004 11:39 p.m. EDT Kerry a Cheapskate, Senate Waiter Says

When it comes to his Senate dining room tipping habits, you'd hardly know Sen. John Kerry married his way into a half-billion-dollar fortune.

Independent researcher Tom Kuiper called our attention last week to a passage from Ron Kessler's 1997 best seller, "Inside Congress: The Shocking Scandals, Corruption, and Abuse of Power Behind the Scenes on Capitol Hill."

Kessler's account includes a few choice quotes from one of the Senate dining room waiters, who used to regularly serve the Senate's wealthiest member.

Kerry is "real cheap," the waiter told Kessler. "He tips, but it is ten percent and below."

The waiter noted that the Massachusetts Democrat isn't alone. Some of Kerry's less-gold-plated colleagues "either do not tip or tip very little. ... They might go out without signing their check or they might sign the check w/ no tip."

My one friend who was leaving the country on business the next day paid for everybody, so we all still left like a $70 tip. I bet we made the waiters day.

I'll bet you did! Cool! I love doing stuff like that.

Is this restaurant worth making a trip up from the DC area for?

You don't get rich by giving it all away in tips. I hate tipping but see it as a necessary evil. Waiters and servers should be paid at least minimum wage so that a meal would actually cost the published price in the menu.

Sorry your feel that way LetsRok. I enjoy tipping those who serve me, especially those who do it well, and most do it well! I see tipping as a way to bless someone and to sow into their life. The bread you cast upon the water always come back, as in you reap what you sow (the Law of Reciprocity). I generally know what the cost of my meal is going to be when I patronize a place; therefore, I am prepared to pay for it when the check arrives.

There really is a "Kerry Cow"; a darn good one and a darn good name before JFKerry's father hijacked it. Of course, now Kerry really does have a "Kerry Cow" and she is a darn good cash cow too!

I don't know what's wrong with this waiter. Imagine the nerve of this guy, expecting a TIP when he should be thanking his lucky stars that he was actually allowed to serve the future (gag!) POTUS. </sarcasm

I always tip under the rule espoused by Vinnie (Steve Martin) in the movie "My Blue Heaven". "Remember, its not how much you tip, its how my you over tip."

I generally tip most service providers (except for fast food places), the barber, the cleaner, etc. I have found that the few bucks I've tipped, that probably would have ended up behind the couch cushions, generally assure that I get treated like royalty the next time I am in their establishment.

I enjoy giving people good tips, too. It makes me feel good to be able to, and I think it speaks well of one's character.

Actually at many clubs you do not tip. Wait staff is paid very well to compensate for this.

There is just nothing positive to say about this man.

Well, there is one thing - God loves him too.

Kerry's family did not have money. JFKerry was funded by a wealthy relative, who paid his tuition, etc. His mother traded on her name and bloodline; learned tactics that can be seen in Kerry's character to this day.

I tipped both our regular garbage men $50 each on Christmas day. They collect garbage every Thursday, even on holidays. They were very thankful. The next week I saw him out there pulling up some weeds by my trash can.
