After-freep report: John F. Kerry visits Wheeling, W.Va.

Wheeling's afternoon paper reported:

Nearly 1,000 people from across the Ohio Valley turned out this morning at Wheeling Park's White Palace to listen to Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry as he kicked off his "Jobs First Bus Tour" of four key election states.

"It's an honor to start my "Jobs First Bus Tour," said Kerry in a text of his speech provided by his staff. Kerry explained that he is going on the bus tour to talk to the residents of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

"Earlier today, I stood with some of the tri-state area's best in the mine," Kerry noted. "And I want to thank the mine workers for their endorsement this morning. I am lucky to have their support, and I look forward to finding a long-term financial solution to the coal miners' retiree health care program. I am looking forward to coming back to West Virginia, visiting the coalfields and talking about my plan to invest in clean coal technology." ....

Kerry said he wants to make America the best nation in the world again and make America's workers the best in the world as well.

"Here in Wheeling, the step that launched a new era of trade was the building of a single bridge the Suspension Bridge in 1849," Kerry said in the statement. "It crossed the Ohio River so that the things you made could cross America. Sometimes all it takes is one action or one idea that kicks open the door to economic opportunity and prosperity.

"But most of all, it can strengthen places like Wheeling. So that once again, the economy can work to strengthen the hopes and dreams of working people here in America and all over the world," Kerry said in closing.

Trying to emulate W with the jeans etc..

In the good old days West Virginia was considered safe territory for Democratic presidential candidates. No more. Ketchup Boy's repeated visits to a state that should in his column shows he's far from having locked down his party's base. You know a Democrat's in deep trouble when he's trailing in a state with overwhelming Democratic voter registration.

Yuck, those jeans look awful. Shades of Al Gore and the airbrush!

No, I didn't wear Mr. M's marathon medals around my neck, but I had tied my flipflops together and wore them, when I wasn't slapping them together in time with our various chants. The fellow with the bullhorn would say, "When I say flip, you say flop. Flip! Flop!" and so on, and my favorite was, "When I say Scara, you say mouche. Scara! Mouche!" Then he'd go into an explanation of Kerry's yacht, the Scaramouche, and how that's a French swashbuckler and Americans like us prefer American things, so we'd start chanting, "USA! USA! USA!" It was hilarious.

More from another Freep at the event:

I went to school, having to leave around 11:30 and when I got there a liberal profressor (but a nice one) said she thought she had spotted me there. I told her I was there, and had spotted her laughing in front. Well, she stated she was not laughing, but instead was upset. So many VIPs had shown up they would not allow any more supporters in, due to a fire hazarrd, even though she had a a ticket! I explained to her this was typical Kerry.

That's funny. All those Dem fat cats and candidates bulled their way in and the "average folks" were barred. Typical.

Thanks - kudos also to sonsofliberty2000, the Wheeling Central Catholic H.S. kids and others who showed up to support the president and his values.

Novak has an article about hanoi john and coal today, it's FR posted.

Last year, Kerry voted for (while Byrd was voting against) the Lieberman-McCain Climate Stewardship Act, which would move the U.S. toward the Kyoto global warming protocol. The EIA estimated the bill would reduce coal's share of electricity from 50 percent down to 11 percent, eliminating 50,000 coal industry jobs.

Just remembered another incident. One of the first responses, or retorts, sonsofliberty2000 and I received was a guy complaining that we weren't objecting to the Catholic Church and its recent problems (apparently, with regard to pedophilia). We just loooked at one another, puzzled. What in the world has that to do with protesting John Kerry's various failings?

Another point:

I was asked by a Bush campaign person not to display my small sign which said, "Kerry dishonors veterans" with a drawing of a band-aid on which was superimposed a Purple Heart. The other side said, "We're not 'Fonda' Hanoi John."

Apparently, she didn't want the Bush campaign to be perceived as being behind attacks on Kerry's questionable Vietnam record (of course, my signs were created by me, and no one else), but I find that a bit puzzling, considering Karen Hughes has questioned Kerry's claims regarding atrocities committed by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam.

I am in Wheeling also. I could not get to the White Palace today because of work. I would've loved to have joined you guys today. Which rich private school kids were you referring to? I hope it's not the school I'm thinking of.

Proud of you, M. Sorry I never made it.

Listened on radio to Rockefeller introduce him as "John Fitzgerald Kennedy, oops Kerry"....barf bag.......then he said that 'Kerry won't make promises, but statements to the steelworkers'!!!!WTF??????Sounds like the music volume at the end of the speech was turned up, thought I heard some boos there. Laughed like hell when effin' said he and Rockefeller know the needs of the average people...final bile producing barf!

Way to go West Virginia Freepers. I have relatives in that area I'll have to ask for their opinions about Jf'nK seeing how they are now all former coal miners.
