Don't let O'Reilly hear you say that. Yesterday he complained that Sam Johnson, Congressman from Texas, called JF'nK "Hanoi John" from the floor of the House...lack of "civility" and all that. O'Reilly never mentioned, and surely he knew, that Johnson was a POW for seven long years in the Hanoi Hilton and that tapes of Kerry and the Veterans Against the War were played by the North Vietnamese torturers to try to break their will. Now they have to watch this maggot lie to try to become the commander-in-chief of the US military during a war! The Kennedy-McCain bill introduced in the Senate this week to allow re-importation of prescription drugs would import Canadian and European socialized medicine and price control schemes.

We all know how shortsighted it would be to import Canada's price control scheme. Unless companies can recover the enormous costs of research and development of new drugs, they will have little economic incentive to pursue such expensive efforts. This isn't a problem for Canada, which imports its drugs from the U.S. at artificially low, below-cost, government-set prices. Canadians reap the benefits of the American pharmaceutical industry without having to bear any of the economic burden or risk.

Under the Kennedy-McCain bill, drug companies would be forced to market their products in Canada at artificially low government-set prices or risk losing their patent rights. The bill would allow Americans to purchase these cheap imports from Canada and eventually Europe.

In effect, we would be importing socialized medicine along with prescription drugs. If the politicians succeed in imposing price controls on the U.S. pharmaceutical industry by the back door of re-importation, they will put at risk America's leadership in new drug research.

Kennedy-McCain also could have a devastating impact on the development of so-called 'orphan drugs' to treat very rare diseases, which is very expensive with little potential return on investment.

Dear MUD:

When Sen. Ted Kennedy was merely just another Democrat bloviating on Capitol Hill on behalf of liberal causes, it was perhaps excusable to ignore his deplorable past.

But now that he's become Sen. John Kerry's leading campaign attack dog, positioning himself as Washington's leading arbiter of truth and integrity, the days for such indulgence are now over.

It's time to remind America why Sen. Kerry's chief spokesman had to abandon his own presidential bid in 1980 - time to say the words Mary Jo Kopechne out loud.

As is often the case, Republicans have deluded themselves into thinking that most Americans already know the story of how this "Conscience of the Democratic Party" left Miss Kopechne behind to die in the waters underneath the Edgartown Bridge in July 1969, after a night of drinking and partying with the young blonde campaign worker.

But most Americans under 40 have never heard that story, or details of how Kennedy swam to safety, then tried to get his cousin Joe Garghan to say he was behind the wheel.

Those young voters don't know how Miss Kopechne, trapped inside Kennedy's Oldsmobile, gasped for air until she finally died, while the Democrats' leading Iraq war critic rushed back to his compound to formulate the best alibi he could think of.

Neither does Generation X know how Kennedy was thrown out of Harvard on his ear 15 years earlier - for paying a fellow student to take his Spanish final.

As they listen to the Democrats' "Liberal Lion" accuse President Bush of "telling lie after lie after lie" to get America to go to war in Iraq, young voters don't know about that notorious 1991 Easter weekend in Palm Beach, when Uncle Teddy rounded up his nephews for a night on the town, an evening that ended with one of them credibly accused of rape.

It's time for Republicans to state unabashedly that they will no longer "go along with the gag" when it comes to Uncle Ted's rants about deception and moral turpitude inside the Bush White House. And if the Republicans don't let's do it ourselves by passing this forgotten disgrace around the Internet to wake up memories of what a fraud and fake Teddy really is.

The Democratic Party, not to mention Sen. John Kerry, should be ashamed to have the national disgrace from Massachusetts as their spokesman. And the GOP needs to say so out loud.

Michael Anthony Peroutka, a graduate of Loyola College in Maryland and the University of Baltimore School of Law, is Chairman of the Constitution Party of Maryland and a member of the Executive Committee of the Constitution Party National Committee.

Michael and his wife, Diane, live in Millersville, Maryland with their three children, Elizabeth, Timothy and Patrick.

Founder of The Institute on the Constitution, a nation-wide program teaching the principles incorporated in the Declaration of Independence and the U. S. Constitution, Michael has, for 18 years, been a partner with his brother Stephen in the Pasadena, Maryland law firm of Peroutka & Peroutka. Inspired by his parents, Anthony and Elizabeth Peroutka, Michael was called to public service at an early age, providing leadership in support of the right to life, the right to keep and bear arms, and other Constitutional causes. Michael resigned from a position with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services when he recognized that none of the programs on which he was working were Constitutionally permissible.

Michael also serves on the Board of Trustees of The Conservative Caucus Research, Analysis & Education Foundation.

Jonah Goldberg's "George W. Bush, Preservative"
Has government become the answer?

AUTHOR'S NOTE: The following G-File is a version of a talk I gave Tuesday night to the Conservative Party of New York State. It was delivered before the State of the Union.

A few quick facts. George W. Bush has:

increased federal spending on education by 60.8 percent;

increased federal spending on labor by 56 percent;

increased federal spending on the interior by 23.4 percent;

increased federal spending on defense by 27.6 percent.

And of course he has:

created a massive department of homeland security;

signed a campaign-finance bill he pretty much said he thought was unconstitutional (thereby violating his oath to uphold, protect, and defend the constitution);

signed the farm bill, which was a non-kosher piñata filled with enough pork to bend space and time;

pushed through a Medicare plan which starts with a price tag of $400 billion but will — according to every expert who studies the issue — go up a gazillion- bajillion dollars over the next decade;

torched Republican — and American — credibility on trade, in both agriculture and steel;

got more people working for the federal government since the end of the Cold War;

not vetoed a single spending — or any other bill, and he has no intention of eliminating a single department;

sold out like a fire sale at Filene's on Title IX, a subject I know a little about because my wife is the foremost expert in the universe on it;

pushed to send more Americans to Mars while inviting a lot more illegal immigrants to hang out here in America.

And that's all before Bush went into reelection mode. Read Tuesday's lead editorial in the Wall Street Journal, and you'll find that this is the spendiest (yes, that's right, "spendiest") president in American history, second only to LBJ.

Maybe there's something about presidents from Texas — they like everything big down there, including their government.

All of this pandering reminds me of H. L. Mencken's comment about Harry Truman. He said that if there were a sizable number of voting-aged cannibals in the U.S., Truman would promise each a Christian missionary in a boiling pot.

So spare me this mindless blather about how George Bush's radicalism runs too hot. This guy is too sweet.

Of course, this is all just another way of saying he is a "compassionate conservative." I'd prefer "conservatism with a human face" — but that reference is probably too obscure, and makes the inherent insult of compassionate conservatism too obvious.

Regardless, as my colleague Ramesh Ponnuru — who's done a lot of serious thinking about all of this — rightly points out, you can't say we weren't warned. Ronald Reagan declared in his first inaugural that "government is the problem."

George W. has never said anything of the sort. In fact, he even said last Labor Day, "We have a responsibility that when somebody hurts, government has got to move."

The Gipper would have spontaneously burst into flames if he'd said something like that

If Bill Clinton had proposed spending over a billion dollars on marriage counseling, conservatives would have howled about how Clinton was a "social engineer" (and how he should probably have spent that money closer to home first). Well now conservatives are the social engineers. The content and aims of the engineering may be different; they may in fact be conservative, good, and necessary. But they don't represent limited government by any stretch of the imagination. And therein lies the best defense of George Bush. He's not so much a conservative as, well, a "preservative." I suppose I could call him a "preservationist," but preservative has that nice Bush sound — like "strategery" or "misunderestimate."
