First love is never forgotten

Maybe it was her smile, or his walk, or even the weather that day.

For 27-year-old Angela Mills of Bossier City, it only took a funny joke. For Rosie Houston, 36, of Shreveport, it took a small accident.

Springtime may be made for lovers, but there's no doubt that long after it's gone the memory of a first love can either make hearts flutter or grimace in pain. Regardless of the circumstances, you never forget it.

First-love hangover?

Need a remedy for heartache over a first love?

Ernie Cowger, licensed counselor for the Center for Therapy in Shreveport, offers a few words of advice:

Date a variety of people. "One of the dangers is that if you stay with the romance of your first love you don't get to the reality until later. You may not know what other kind of people are out there if you don't explore that. Sometimes people get so infatuated and caught up in 'This is the one' That they don't want to what else is in the broad world out there.

Broaden the field. "Sometimes young people forget that there are other schools in the city, state, even other countries. There's a whole world at our fingertips and I think the computer's helping us with that."

Change your perspective of what's possible. "Maybe it even takes getting in a different environment, going out and meeting other people, going to different places and exposing yourself to different experiences and people."

I wouldn't mind actually forgetting what's her name. But, she still has a lot of pictures I would like to have back. Plus, some books and my "Abbey Road" album.

Yeah, right. My first love and I had a stupid fight and broke up, then he had a fling with another girl and got her pregnant. Back then, at least in our small town, you married the girl if you got her pregnant, it was the right thing to do and he was the type of guy that thought marriage was forever. I spent the night before he got married with him and he pledged he would always love me and gave me a silver wedding band. I went on to a string of really bad relationships and even moved out of state because of my grief and eventually lost track of him, but still have the ring and dream of him to this day. It took me 30 years to find a relationship that could even come close to what we had back then. IMHO, Ernie is a quack.

...I totally agree.

As do I.

His advice is tenable only AFTER the relationship is terminated, for whatever reason. Then it is a good idea.

But, as long as the relationship is going, such advice as his should be ignored. It's absurd.

Not the first but the best was when I was working sound for a reggae band at a local club and my future wife showed up at the door expecting to meet some girlfriends for an evening of country music. There she was, all dressed up for a squaredance surrounded by dreadlocked bumba-rumbas. Wrong club but at the right time for me..... So pretty and so confused. I was helpless...fell like a ton of bricks right there.

I'll never be over my first love although I haven't seen him in 11 years. He was about perfect. :)

Having a bit of trouble putting those two sentences together.

and he pledged he would always love me and gave me a silver wedding band.

You should have kicked in his gonads right there, IMHO.

Ray Davies of the Kinks said this all before in a song....

How well I remember my very first love affair.
Those juvenile fantasies and innocent dreams we shared.
But we’re too blind to realize that we are totally unprepared
For the first time we fall in love.
We think it’s forever, the first time we fall in love.
We always treasure the first time we fall in love.
Those other romances come and go,
But we cherish the memory of
The first time we fall in love.

First love can be such a strain.
It can rule your head, it can bring you pain,
And when it ends it seems such a shame.
The first time we fall in love,
Can make you sad, it can keep you awake,
It can drive you mad.
People say you’re too young and it’s only a fad
The first time we fall in love.
The first time we fall in love.

The first time I fell out of love, it knocked me through the floor.
My world came crashing down, it shook me to the core.
I was unprepared ’cos I was only a kid
And I was much too young and I wasn’t equipped
For the emotional pressures and stresses of it.
But oh, I’ll never forget
The way that she looked the first time we met.
Time goes by but we never forget
The first time we fall in love.

Love can be exciting, it can be a bloody bore.
Love can be a pleasure or nothing but a chore.
Love can be like a dull routine,
It can run you around till you’re out of steam.
It can treat you well, it can treat you mean,
Love can mess you around,
I can pick you up, it can bring you down.
But they’ll never know
The feelings we show
The first time we fall in love.
The first time we fall in love.

I could have written that in September 1978, when my "fist love" relationship crashed and burned. Those were my sentiments exactly.
