This current thread (BREAKING NEWS: Air Force jet crashes near Callaway) is just typical of so many. Lots of us don't know where Callaway is; have never heard of Callaway; or mistakenly think it is a Golf Club.

(Yes, I know this thread says the pilots are from some AFB in North Carolina, but WTF is Callaway?)

Please! If the article being posted does not contain a dateline with State information, please add it (or other location info - e.g. 40 mi. SW of Philadephia) in brakets or something. Not all of us know where Springfield is.

Americans are weak on geography, although FReepers are fairly strong on that and most other topics. It can be a challenge to place an article, and that is a good thing. Question marks should be flying inside our heads all the time, but hopefully not always the same question marks.

Absolutely. Sometimes it's a challenge to identify the country the incident occurred in. These time town papers assume everyone knows where Four Corners or Bugtussle is.

Some article headlines begin with the two letter state abbreviation which I think is a great idea.

I agree. Sometimes it's hard to tell where the article is from.

I agree with you. It's not a matter of geography. It would be impossible to know where every city in the United States is.

It makes the post more interesting if we can place where the event is happening.

There is a Callaway, VA, located north of Martinsville, and southwest of Rocky Mount, VA. Martinsville is close to the NC state line.........

The thread wasn't from a stupid newspaper, it was from a stupid local NBC affiliate in Roanoke. Stupid local TV affiliates assume that you know every little podunk town in their viewing areas. And since Callaway is home to a regional racetrack, most (if not all) of WSLS' viewers know exactly where it is.

I would agree with your assessment of the stupidity if it were coming from a national news outlet.
