NRA's Eye Is Fixed on Bush
LA Times ^ | May 16, 2004 | Masthead Editorial

Posted on 05/16/2004 2:09:18 PM PDT by neverdem

Just under four months from today, Americans will be able to walk out of a gun store with an AK-47 rifle, an Uzi or other weapon of mass murder under their arm.

Unless Congress acts — and Republican leaders show no inclination to do so — the 10-year-old federal assault gun ban will expire Sept. 13. A word from President Bush would get a renewal before lawmakers, a majority of whom would probably approve it. But the president is silent.

Most people, including most gun owners, are properly alarmed. A survey released last month by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center found that 71% of those surveyed and 64% of gun owners wanted Congress to extend the ban.

But congressional leaders, too accustomed to taking marching orders from the National Rifle Assn., have stymied the reauthorization bill that Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), John W. Warner (R-Va.) and Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced last year.

Boo hoo, woe is the LA Times.

On a serious note, IIRC, John Warner's only serious opponent in the last election was a big 'L' Libertarian. The rats declined to waste money on an oppnent. If he goes for another term, someone has to take him on in a primary election.

The key is how "those surveyed" were selected.

My guess is that people like me, for instance, were not very likely to be selected...

I don't recall that fully automatic weapons were legal before the "assault weapons ban" Where they?

That's for sissies and punks. I prefer running 'em down with an SUV. I like watching them bounce off the pavement.

I wonder what their definition of owner is.

or other weapon of mass murder

We cannot be homophobes, but we can be gunophobes... hmmmmm

Me think the LA times should be sued for inciting hate crime.

Typical of liberals to cast stones and bullets first against those carrying a firearm.

What I find so hard to understand is why so few people understand that rights have nothing to do with popularity.

The Los Angeles Times has never been honest about the 2nd Amendment issues. They have always incorrectly and intentionally identified almost any semi-automatic firearm as an "AK-47."

Automatic weapons, and the permits to hold such weapons, are still covered under appropriate federal laws.

Yes. A tax stamp is deemed necessary by some tryants since 1934. Of course we all know, there is no such thing as an illegal weapon.

See, if you take the advice of the NAACP, NOW etc, those are informed decisions and "grass roots political action". If you listen to the NRA its "marching orders"

But, there's no liberal bias. I can tell the author is pro-gun, can't you!

Thanks. Sure is a comfort to know that only drug dealers, illegal alien smugglers, and other assorted thugs are the only ones who will have automatic weapons.
