“Whatever else history may say about me when I’m gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears; to your confidence rather than your doubts. My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty’s lamp guiding your steps and opportunity’s arm steadying your way.”

Count me as one whose best hopes he appealed to. I was relatively young when he was elected. Men like Lincoln and Washington were distant history, taught as no more than dates to memorize. I came from the more immediate events, from the aftermath of Viet Nam, Watergate and ongoing Civil Rights battle. While all of the institutions around me tried to make this a country of of shameless men, Ronald Reagan made me proud to be an American.

Thank you for this post.

Upon news of President Reagan's passing, my husband has set up a memorial web site to honor him. We invite all to visit, light a candle and leave a message that can be shared with all others who visit the site.

He gave us hope, when this nation needed it most. That is greatness.

Thanks for the ping.

Ronald Reagan is the reason I left the Democratic party and registered Republican many years ago.

I've never regreted it and my admiration of the man has only grown over the years.

Funny, though I felt President Reagan was taken from us a long time ago when his illness took him out of the public eye.....I am heart broken today to know he really is gone. I haven't cried this much in a long, long time.

I know exactly how you feel.
As long as he was living,
I always held out hope for
a miracle cure.
I loved him too.

I only hope RR's death will spotlight FREEDOM all the more so that GWB can truly run with the torch and keep spreading the word and fighting evil.

&&

Your thought is the same as mine, but you expressed it more eloquently. I remember thinking last night that it is sad that he is gone, but he lived a full life and contributed much. And perhaps all of the publicity will remind the voters of the importance of electing a man who says what he means and means what he say.

Hi Onyx. I started crying again when the lady who gave the press conference choked up. I heard that GWB is going to try to make it to the Friday burial service, although all the final plans are still up in the air. If it's at all possible, I would not be surprised if he flew the family and casket back to California on Air Force One. I'm going to try to get Friday off and find a way up to Simi Valley to pay my respects by standing along the motorcade route.

I figure the LEAST we owe him is the presevation of his legacy from the leftist barbarian onslaught.

Yes, indeed, the least we owe him.
