Dr. James Dobson Endorses Coburn

Dear Friend,
In the course of my professional career in defense of families, I have had a chance to get to know some of our nation's leading political figures. The one who has impressed me most, however, is not a professional politician at all; he is a family doctor from Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Dr. Tom Coburn was so concerned about the direction our country was taking that he decided to go to Washington to help make a difference. Elected to Congress in the historic class of 1994, he vowed to be a citizen-legislator severing no more than three terms. He not only kept that promise, but he made every day count during his six years in Congress.
Dr. Coburn led the way on numerous health issues, including a dramatic revision of our nation's failed approach to the AIDS epidemic. He was a courageous and effective voice for fiscal responsibility on this and other important issues. And, above all, he was the single best leader I ever worked with on the critical moral and family issues that have been at the heart of my own work.
After his wonderful term of service in congress, Dr. Coburn returned home to the full-time practice of medicine and to enjoy his grandchildren. But now, the call to duty in Washington has presented itself again. One of Oklahoma's U.S. Senators, Don Nickles, is retiring from office this year, and people from across the state and throughout the nation have beseeched Dr. Coburn to become a candidate for that office.
In spite of a great deal of reluctance to leave the community he loves for a second time, Tom Coburn is answering that call. He is a candidate for the open Senate seat from Oklahoma in 2004. He started this race late and far behind in competition with formidable and well-funded opponents in both the primary and general elections.
Tom Coburn is an exceptional man. I love him as a friend and admire him as a statesman. I believe that his presence in the United States Senate will make a significant difference for the future of our country. Speaking as a private individual and not on behalf of the organization I lead, let me say that I hope you will consider voting for this man of deep convictions about the things that matter most. It is my sincere opinion that if you care about the future of the family and about the traditional moral principles on which the nation was founded, you should consider helping to elect Dr. Tom Coburn to the U.S. Senate.
-- James C Dobson, Ph.D.
He would be my choice. But alas, all the big guns here have come out for the mayor of Oklahoma City, Kirk Humphreys. Slick TV ads with endorsements from J.C. Watts, Senators Don Nickles and James Inhofe. That will be hard to overcome.
If Watts and Inhofe - two true blue wingers - are backing Humphreys, why would Dobson come out for Coburn? Is there something about Humphreys that is not known (at least outside of Oklahoma)? Is their a "social issues" divide here? I ask because I know both Watts and Inhofe are the real deal - and Nickles sure ain't bad.
bump to watch
Thanks. I know Coburn is pretty hardcore. However, I can't imagine that Watts, Inhofe, and Nickles would back Humphreys, pragmatist or not, if he was wallowing out there in Specter territory.
He isn't. Both candidates are conservative. Coburn is more electable and would be a GREAT senator. Humphreys would be a good senator.
Not really. Coburn's still out-fundraising him and out polling him. He'll crush him in the primary.
The reason the establishment doesn't like him is because he's a jerk. From everything I've heard about him, that's probably accurate. But he's our Jerk, and he'll be a great pain in the ass. Think McCain without some of the more lib tendencies.
Please, get educated.
Humprhies is nowhere near Specter land.
That said, Coburn is more electable and would be more effective. Like I said in my last post, the establishment doesn't like him because he's kinda a jerk and mavrick, but that's fine with me. We need team players, we also need people to give people heartburn every now and then.
Still, ill-informed armchair quarterbacks will continue to tell Bush how to do his job at every turn. Go figure.
Almost no incumbent president take sides in primaries that don't involve incumbents, BTW, and Bush won't here either.
I was hoping to get "educated" on this matter, ZB. That's why I asked.
Speaking of Coburn being "kinda a jerk," those are the "kinda" Republicans that so many on the right seem to gravitate towards. Interesting phenomenom.
That's good to hear. Sounds like we have a WIN-win situation if either gets elected in the general. Thanks.
There is no incumbancy involved here. This is an open seat. Bush and Rove should stay out of it. I'm sending money to Dr. Coburn. He is a REAGAN Republican.
