For Ronald Reagan, America was the "shining city on a hill". For M Giscard and his fellow founding fathers, the European Union is affordable housing on an environmentally protected hill. I can't see it working myself.

Bravo!

glad you beat the quidster again...

Great piece by Steyn, I liked this line:

they maintain that the Soviet empire would have collapsed anyway, their belated belief in the inevitable failure of communism being in no way inconsistent with their previous long-held belief in the inevitable triumph of communism.

They wouldn't want the USA and conservatism to get the credit for turning back totalitarianism so they pretend it didn't happen, this leaves it open to come back in an improved form, controlled by them.

Bump!!! Yet again, Steyn proves to be a phenomally acute observer and political analyst.

Thanks for the ping and the post, Pokey. Steyn is both perceptive and a heck of a writer. I relish every one of his columns. Have they been collected into one or more books? Since he is so prolific, we'd have the equivalence of a set of Britannica Encyclopedias!

The intelligentsia persist in believing this had nothing to do with Reagan…[they believe] if anyone was responsible, it was Mikhail Gorbachev.

Steyn of course, is right on. For example, the MSM couldn't’t acknowledge RR as the Man of the Decade, oh no, not him. Those small minded ideologues at Time awarded MOTD to their darling, Gorbachev, for haplessly failing to avert the Communist U.S.S.R’s inexorable decline and ultimate fall.

This is the equivalent to awarding Sportsmen of the Decade to the coach that takes a team from perennial dynasty to cellar dweller prior to being ignominiously fired.

Thank you for the picture, I think it's the best I have ever seen of Ronald Reagan. It personifies to me, everything that is strong and rightly proud in the USA. I can imagine President Bush riding a horse with the same confidence and obvious pleasure. Long Live The Cowboy Heroes. R.I.P. Ronald Reagan.
From an Aussie who despises Kerry and all that the DemocRATS stand for...horse-shite.

God's gift to the English language.

Thanks for the non-bowdlerized version, Pokey.

Methinks, that rather than remaining a dogmatic neocon, Steyn is yet another writer (think, Michelle Malkin) who is ignoring the divide set up by neocon and paleocon hacks.

Many of my New Hampshire neighbours wander round with the constitution in their pocket so they can whip it out and chastise over-reaching congressmen and state representatives at a moment's notice.

Oops. LOL! Uh...guilty as charged, m'lud.

I predict most on the left side in the United States will either display acceptance, pretence to admiration, or outright admiration to Ronald Reagan. (Personally I don't believe they truly like him - maybe they are thinking along the lines of European Left and Right who are still hostile to him. They know too well that they can't show this in public because they are in America)

In much of the rest of the West, the standard Leftist and "Centrist" argument of the Cold war's end is still Gorbachev's achievement, while the standard "Rightist" argument is Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger's detente which caused the SU's eventual fall. To both, Reagan was just a "cowboy fool" who was a lucky bystander.

Of course the Soviet Union's own men put the truth in numerous accounts, but still much of the West refuse to look at the evidences and evaluate them. Tragic.
