I was pretty young during the '80s, but I remember my father (an ardent anti-communist; he escaped Hungary in 1956) saying at the time that the Politburo kept installing old, sick men as Secretary-General because they needed more time to plan their ulimate strategy. My dad passed on in 1990, but I often wonder what he would think of the current state of things.

Mark Steyn is right. Free nations have governments not the other way around. I'd be surprised if a European Government becomes a continental success story in view of how its being constructed.

By having the EU constitution so detailed, it will be open for continual change, so changing it will be easy, compared to the difficulty in changing ours.

When it becomes commonplace to change it, just think of the laws that our States and the Feds push thorough without much debate or knowledge from the public. At least we can challenge the laws to determin if they are constitutional. The EU cannot, since it will be the Constitution that is changed. They will be ripe for a despot.

Mark Steyn has a couple of books out. My brother (XJarhead) got me a signed copy of "The Face of the Tiger" for last Christmas, autographed by Mark. Check out www.Steynonline.com for details.

"The Face of the Tiger" collects his columns from September 12, 2001 until a year later. Make sure you get your copy now, in the summer, so you have it handy for "The Brutal Afghan Winter".

The good news is that when nations decide to leave the EU there will be no armies to oppose them, and the civil war will be bloodless.

One of the good RR comemorative stories has RR being asked by the media --after several months or years--why he has refused to have an official state meeting with Russia.

"Well....they just keep dieing on me.."

Beautiful link. Thanks for posting.

I would love to see that posted as a separate thread, so I could bookmark it. I'm sure others would love it as much as I did.

God bless Ronald Reagan, and President Bush. Two awesome cowboys.
