Two great terms that are hopefully becoming common are "NON-NEGOTIABLE ISSUE" and "disqualifying issue"

From A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters:
"A disqualifying issue is one which is of such gravity and importance that it allows for no political maneuvering. It is an issue that strikes at the heart of the human person and is non-negotiable. A disqualifying issue is one of such enormity that by itself renders a candidate for office unacceptable regardless of his position on other matters."

From Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics (An On-Line Guide):

The FIVE NON-NEGOTIABLE ISSUES are:
1. Abortion
2. Euthanasia
3. Fetal Stem Cell Research
4. Human Cloning
5. Homosexual "Marriage"

the apostate john kerry disqualifies himself on each of the 5.

The bishop's response is clear and well written.

I, too, have noted that most everyone goes to communion and yet few go to confession. This reality has gone unchallenged for far toooooo longgggg and is probably one of the main reasons for many of the vitriolic reactions to his original article and comments.

I applaud his courage and sense of responsibility. He is truly a remarkable person. I hope we will hear more from him.

I'm glad my pastor is more traditional, he mentions this frequently in his sermons. The lines are empty on Saturdays and full of Sundays, people miss the readings and still come forward, many miss mass and are in line the following week.
