You couldn't hold a gun to my head, give me a billion dollars, and make me read that tripe.

This has to be told to the Marketing Central office. Let them be aware that their local managers are hurting their business.

In Viktor Suvorov's book Aquarium, he recounts his first big assignment as an intel officer at the Soviet embassy in Vienna: secretly dispose of hundreds of boxes of Khrushchev's memoirs that were stored in the attic.

The station chief was afraid that by simply burning them, the Western intel operatives watching the embassy would mistake this as the burning of documents prior to war. Admitting that there wasn't really a big demand for the former leader's memoirs was also out of the question.

And so, a security container the size of a box car was sent from Vienna to a military base in Russia, while Western agents went crazy trying to puzzle out what secret equipment the Soviets were spiriting out of the country.

Grocer, you say? That's a typical discount for a bestseller or a book anticipated to be one at the local King Sooper's. Look for the latest Dean Koontz and Stephen King on those same shelves. They're probably sporting the same 40% off cover price stickers.

I'm obliged to add that "bestseller" doesn't equal "good book" by any stretch of the imagination. I'm anticipating the Stain's adventure into publishing to be a real heapin' steamer.

"Why not 90% discount ??"

Because purpose-milled toilet paper is still softer AND cheaper?

I would give a dime; maybe even a dollar. A boxcar full of books could keep us warm through several winters. Sort of like heating with buffalo chips, but with a cleaner burn.

Understand:
But would you really want to burn them.
Kinda like someone Pi$$ing on your welding rods.
Still work, but could you stand the smell??

These big discounts are normal. It is like going to the grocery store and finding a $4.99 12-pak of Coke being "discounted" to $2.99.

Agreed, all it's really saying is that books are overpriced to begin with. And don't even get me started on my pet peeve, "mail-in rebates". Just knock down the damn price to begin with.

These big discounts are normal.

I bought the most recent Harry Potter book at a 40% discount minutes after it was released for sale. Since there has never been a bigger best seller, I doubt if it was being remaindered. More likely, the markup on big sellers is enormous, and the discounts are designed to bring customers to the discount stores.

Hmmm... Should we all rush out and buy the book? We could do our part to help Der Schlickmeister suck all of the oxygen out of Kerry's room.
