Clinton Book Hits Stands at 40% Discount
6-15-04 | Coloradomomba

Well, it didn't take long, just opened my junk mail to find my local grocers ad which included a full color insert announcing the arrival of the slicksters new book ...available with a 40% discount. It has gone from new arrival to clearance status in the same sentence.

Major chains offer all of the "big" titles at this rate. There's no way they'd be pricing it low because of poor sales yet. I think it's #1 on Amazon.

Remaindered already. Bargain bookdom and it hasn't even been released yet. If I were a stockholder in that publishing company, I'd be pretty ticked.

These big discounts are normal. It is like going to the grocery store and finding a $4.99 12-pak of Coke being "discounted" to $2.99.

If you attend a speaking engagement of clinton, you will have to buy the book. Unions will buy boxloads which will be basement dust collectors.

I think it plays into the whole "democrats are more popular" game. Convince the feeble minded sheep that you're a winner because nobody wants to bet on a loser.

It's just a marketing ploy. Overprice the retail value of the book and then lure suckers into buying it by offering a big "discount".

A book being advertised at 40% off before it's release is more a sign that it's hot than it's not.

I would bet the $25 I'm not going to spend on this book that when it comes out there will be a sticker on it for 20% off. They did the same thing with hillarys book when it was up against Ann Coulters book. Anns book was regular price.

I wonder who's book they're competing with?

Unions and public libraries.

Didn't the DNC buy thousands of copies of the beast's book to shore up its numbers?

Yup. But what really torqued me off was the money public libraries are spending on this swill. One metro system I looked at bought over 100 copies of Hillie's last doorstop. Heaven only knows how much they're going to spend on this work of fiction.

Most "bestsellers" are significantly discounted by all bookstores, usually at 40%...this includes Amazon, B&N, Borders, etc. This is done in part as a "loss leader" drawing people into the store to buy the hot new book. It's anticipated based on pre-orders that Clinton's book is a bestseller, hence the discount.

Clearance books are usually discounted significantly more than 40%.

Would be nice to think that Clinton's on clearance already, but sorry to say he's not :).

40% is standard.

you go to Barnes and Noble it will be 30% off and then your frequent book card is another 10%

yup, I've found the only place where you pay full tilt boogie is at sporting events. At Dodger Stadium a few years ago I said to the beerman "Six dollars for two beers? Why I could buy a 12-pack for that back home!" The guy looked at me with a grin and said "yes but you don't go to the stadium everyday now do you?". Later I thought how utterly profound that statement was.
