That is your alternative.
  1. A free an open society where all are free to exercise their faith (including proselytizing). OR
  2. A totalitarian society in which religious practice is subject to the whims of the state.

Whether or not you have directly called for "government intervention or a law to be passed," the only way to obtain your objective is to promote the apparatus of the state over the pursuit of faith.

Being the target of conversion attempts is a (tiny) price we pay to live in freedom.

Emphasis added. This is binary thinking and I have not once even suggested that alternative, so stop attributing it to me. The alternative I suggest is maturity in the Christian evangelical community, that they voluntarily cease attempts to convert Jews to Christianity, for the purpose of eliminating the atmosphere of distrust, and to engender good will and cooperation among the broad spectrum of ideas in which the two faiths are in solid agreement. In the case they don't cease, I do not advocate any coercion whatsoever. I will only point out that in that case, mistrust and suspicion of motives are well-deserved.

I just thought of one way, perhaps, to help you understand. How do you feel about homosexuals attempting to target your children for conversion?
