This is the differance between the mighty mighty Marine Corps and the obsolete US Army (of course, take the ribbing to heart Army...:) yes, I know, we are part of the Department of Navy, but it is the Mens Department.
The Pacific Theater in WWII, because of the the geography, was a Navy show. The Marine Corps received a lot of well deserved kudos, but the Army participated in more opposed amphibious landings in WWII than the Marines.
Pershing quote is out of context.
You tell me,,,If there was just marines and the ARMY never existed,,,how many wars would we have won???
If there was just the ARMY and no marines,,,the outcome of history would be much the same as it is now...
I'm not sure that reason satisfies me......Not picking at you, but it seems that the improvements in utilization of personnel and time/money savings, would force the services to coordinate efforts. Of course, in my line of work improving efficiency rules all.
Hmmmm, I did not know that. The Army under MacAuthor was brilliant in defeating the Japanese. I kinda hate to say this, but I thought the Army tactics were vastly superior to the Naval tactic of constant frontal assault. The Army and Army air corp put all others to shame in Asia after a very poor showing in the Philippines.
It's all in good humor.
I concur. Good job!
efficiency is not the top pirority, killing the enemy is, and killing the enemy means controlling your own fate. There are numerious instances of one service leaving other service high and dry, each service has it's own unique job do to. And it's own unique way of getting the job done.
I don't seem to remember an authorized uniform mode allowing:
shoes-black, pants-blue w/red stripe, tshirt-white
(see image 296.jpg in that same photo archive)
...but then considering the accessories they're wearing, I suppose we can cut these two Marines just a little slack.
... priceless.
I got no dog in this fight. I just know that the Old Guard Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Coast Guard men and women looked top shape during the funeral for President Reagan. I know the picture could be taken with all branches slouching at one time or another. This is just good jesting....
Audie Murphy was Army. They are both tough branches. They both fight hard ground combat. I know the Marines are considered the best and toughest, but the Army is right up there too.
I understand your point, but at the same time in my opinion I would rather have a Marine or Soldier fighting and killing the enemy instead of having them deliver supplies. I would think that with integration and teamwork, you could take at least 25% (probably higher) of the soldiers/marines dedicated to supply and utilize them in a manner that is directly related to the fighting. That improvement could be monumental.
I understand tho about the "fear" of depending on another branch for your lifeblood. However, I suspect that the "fears" are based on a time when communication was much more difficult than it is today. Technology should have advanced to allow for full utilization of the soldier/marine.
On the other hand, strategically it may make sense to have 2 supply lines anyway. If one is interrupted the troops will still be getting some supplies.
Now you can see why I'm not wearing any stars!
No, not a marine utility cap - The Army soldier has his patrol cap "bird nested".
I was gonna comment on the Lance Corporal's uniform in the intial post, till I saw photo number 296. I think I might have been one of those Jarheads! (at least I wish I was one of them!) Those Marines must be celebrating the Corps' Birthday!
No...that is a Marine Cover.
"The Army soldier ...."
Nah, a Marine already verified that it is either a Marine or a Navy Corpsman.
Bush/Clinton/GWB 12B (Combat engineer enlisted) and 21B (Combat Engineer Officer) NJARNG/FLARNG/USAR
It is an LC. My fault.
