SPEARFISH -- Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Thursday that he was very concerned about homeland security issues in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.
The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating an attack aimed at disrupting elections, the White House said Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts underway to ''ramp up security,'' White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.
"It is absolutely essential for the U.S. Senate to turn its attention to what we can do to make America safe," Daschle said.
Of particular concern are the nation's borders and ports, Daschle said, and there are security issues unresolved as the homeland security appropriations are "hung up" in the Senate.
Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."
Daschle said the most recent terror briefing was the second this week and contained information that there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Those foreign leaders that want him to be the POTUS have told him just have the US bend over and take it from the
terrorists and the UN, and there will be nothing to worry about.
It does, IMO. But then the authorities were also worried about Las Vegas at New Year's....remember?
If the terrorists were "smart",they'd pick someplace "unlikely".But I really don't think that they are all that clever.They do seem to like to revisit places/go back and "get" what they couldn't last time around.

ISLAMIC terrorists based in Britain and controlled by Osama bin Laden planned a devastating attack in February on the European Parliament building in Strasbourg.

A six-strong terror cell funded by the Saudi fugitive planned to kill all 625 Euro-MPs, and scores of officials, by releasing sarin gas into the parliament building.
The attack was scheduled to take place during the session of parliament from February 11 to 14 this year and was to be the first in a series of assaults against prominent buildings across Europe. Algerian terrorists based in London and funded directly by bin Laden worked with counterparts in Milan and Frankfurt.
The plot was foiled after German police smashed the Frankfurt operation in a series of raids. The British-based six men were arrested and charged with offences under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
The charges were subsequently dropped just days after the men appeared at Horseferry Road magistrates' court, London. The Crown Prosecution Service said that the decision was made for security reasons.

Yes. I don't doubt that AQ is trying to attack us. Frankly, I don't understand why there hasn't been a real terrorist attack here since 9/11 - anthrax. We killed thousands of AQ in Afghanistan and I'm sure plenty more in places we'll never hear about. Still, UBL had to have had a series of follow up attacks planned. It would be so easy. Are our guys that good or is/was UBL just a strategic idiot?
I wonder if the Israeli-Hamas battle helps us understand the US-AQ battle. After the IDF tubed their leader I expected a massive wave of terrorist attacks in Israel. It didn't happen. Were you as stunned by this lack of response as I was? Maybe we have decapitated AQ and they've been thrown into disarray???

I know, this is no laughing matter, very serious stuff. But I just couldn't resist.
Terrorists like places that ares the least expected,as well as redoing that which did NOT quite work the last time.That leaves the left coast and the Capital buildings.
Yes it's a serious threat, but Daschle is also running for reelection this year so he's moving temporarily to the right as part of his campaign. If he wins, he'll quickly move back to the left and ignore the will of the people of South Dakota. Daschle is a disgraceful, dishonest, highly deceptive political hack. He lies like sheep in a pasture.
